As the boats are done, we started the next project. Some railroad stuff for your dockyard, in 1/350, 1/700 and 1/200. In 1/350, you can of course combine them with my photoetched wagon set.

A first release is the ALCO S1 locomotive. It was designed before WW2 and is still in service, being a common site for yards, harbours or factories, and would look well together with some alliance modelworks wagons.

After a few days of break, we released a few more items to make your harbour more lively in any scale - in 1/350, 1/200 and 1/700.

First, standard 55gal/200l fuel drums, in sets of 100 items.

Then, a 53ft 6 in flat car with steel underframe. A quite standard design, such flatcars were common from 1920 to now. This one is based on 1943 American Car and Foundry drawings, as built for North Pacific Railroads. Now, your ALCO S1 has some objects for shunting, and, hint-hint, more are coming very soon!

After a family-related break, I continued the design for model ships.
Yesterday, a new 3D model was uploaded to my store. This time, it is a massive 1:48 scale 3D model of the US Navy 40ft motor launch. This was reconstructed for the customer using photos and plans of other US motor launches. You will need to add the railings and the tiller.

It can be found here:

After more then 2 years of work, we released the steam tug Simla kit over shapeways today. Here it is: http://shpws.me/PG7j
A template for bending the tow protection arks for the rear deck is available here http://shpws.me/PG7A

Image

Image

The model is of the famous steam tug Simla. This ship served from 1898 until 1964, and participated in both World Wars. It saved several ships in peacetime, and was avarded a Sea Gallantry medal in 1898 for saving the crew members from the barque Blengfell, which Naphta cargo suddenly exploded. In the Second World War, it participated in Dunkirk evacuation, participating in salvage of destroyers Montrose and Jaguar, and sloop Bideford, as well as a number of merchant ships. During the D-Day, it towed different equipment.

See more here: http://riverthames.sosugary.com/display ... p?pid=2668
Another great photo of Simla in early condition is here https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/reso ... 1373/10/30

We used many original photos and a copy of original plans from the "British steam tugs" book by P.N. Thomas to reconstruct the ship.

You will need following items to complete the ship:
2 Bar Railing (any brand, preferrably with small stanchion distance)
Inclined Ladder (any brand, fit to length)
Steering wheel (i.e. WEM PE 736)
Brass rod for masts and tow arches over the rear deck.
Anchor

Number of masts changed during the time. Originally, the ship used 2 masts (one after the funnel, one before bridge), later, the rear mast was removed. At some point her funnel seems to be shortened a bit. Originally, there were 2 whaleboats carried, later only one remained on the port side.

I can provide you with the reference material on the ship. Please write me a message, and I will supply it to you.

I fully realize this is no fault of yours; but have you seen the actual finished printed product, and can you comment on all and any printing artifacts on the model? Are they in places difficult to access without damage to delicate parts, like ventilators, etc? Also, were there other similar tugs in service of the same class, or is this the "one and only", ie. could you have a scene which includes more than one "Simla" in service?

Hi,

Yes, I did, and we made a few changes to eliminate these hard to access parts. In general, only tricky place is to paint under the bridge fairing, but it is also nearly invisible area.

As for multiple tugs - Simla is a very typical "british type" tug, which could be found in nearly any location from London to South Africa, from Russia to Japan and from Argentina to Australia, except the USA. You could introduce some variation in look for several tugs in scene by using one or two life boats, different mast arrangements (one mast or two), different vent arrangements, or different tow rope protection arcs over the stern. For more radical change, cut off the rounded fairing for the bridge.
A very similar tug was for example Java - http://riverthames.sosugary.com/display ... play_media

I will check if Simla had sister ships.

Thanks, but painting isn't the issue. It's cleaning up (filing and sanding) of printing lines sometimes found in very obvious and difficult areas.

The superstructure is perfectly rectangular and has no steps in test prints. I surfaced both the inboards and outboards surfaces on a test print not by sanding but by gentle scratching with an old Nr.11 blade. Less then 20 mins for entire 1/350 boat. Some minor pieces were sanded by gluing 1x1 mm sandpaper piece on the toothpick end.

I found that tug Simla had a sister ship, called Harold, it is listed in the buiders plans.
For that ship, I found following info:

HAROLD 1898

Built 1898 by Lobnitz and Co, Renfrew. YN473. Screw tug. L100'. B20'. D12'. 144grt. 99nhp 400ihp 3cylTE by Lobnitz.

1898 Delivered to S Pearson and Sons, London. 1901 Owner John Hammond, London. 1905 Owner Charles J Wills London. 1916 Owner Royal Indian Marine. 1916 Req for service in Mesopotamia. 21-5-1917 Left Aden towing barge RB1 and disappeared, probably foundered in cyclone.

I just released the 1/350 26ft US Navy Personnel boat, based on 1956 plans. I was told that no kit yet managed to get the form right, so I tried my best to make it right this time.
