New year, new online build. Doggy Industries Triomphante was one of last years' more interesting new kits and as I have wanted to do a battleship of one of the colonial powers for a long time I have put this one to the top of the to-build pile. The kit looks really nice out of the box and as I found some very good pictures of Victorieuse in a white and buff scheme I decided to build her as her older sister.
After looking at a lot of 19th century pictures and drawings I have decided to respectfully disagree with Abdur about the shape of the poop deck and made my own version in evergreen 2020.

I also did a quick build of the bridge and funnel combination. All resin and PE parts fit very well.
I did lower the funnel as I want to put her under sail with the funnel retracted.

And the upper deck main guns were assembled. Everything is still loose in these pictures, I want to add some more detail later.

The hull was given some extra detail around the masts. All pictures I have seen of french battleships of the period show lots of heavy rope around the masts and this was made out of speaker wire.

And to round off a weekends' work I added the bases for the main deck secondary guns and sent Victorieuse away for a coat of primer.

Hi Jim,
thanks for pointing that one out. The kit funnel is perfectly straight, the superstructure was placed loosely on the hull for the photo shoot however so it appears to be somewhat mis aligned .
The picture you are posting BTW is the picture I'm using as my 'primary' reference, I love the color scheme of Victorieuse at that point in her history. It does mean I will have to make some changes to the rig when it gets to that part of the build. This is still somewhat in the future though. I have started reworking the upper deck main guns last night, will try and post pictures later.

Interesting!

I want to built that kit too. Do you found photos of the stern?

Hi maxim,
I did find some pictures of the stern, not of the highest quality though. pm me if you're interested. One thing is really clear, La Gallisoniere can not be built from this kit.

You are correct. The original design for the three corvettes cuirassées of the La Galissonnière class was by Camille Audenet but the design for the two final ships of the class, Victorieuse and Triomphante, was modified by Sabatier during their extended construction period, so they should be considered only half sisters to La Galissonnière.

Hi Maurice, thanks for the comment. If you have any more information about the design and construction of the ships, especially the rigging, that would be most welcome. So far I'm stuck with the very basic sketch on http://dossiersmarine.org/c-c.htm

Not much progress to report as the sun came out this weekend . Haven't seen that here for a while.
Anyway, the main guns have now gained their working platforms in .3mm styrene.

And I took the opportunity to compare these BL guns with the much more complicated muzzle loaders from the other side of the channel.

Meanwhile the first paint is on the deck. Still needs a lot of work.

@ Abdur: do you plan another of the French ship of the Sino-French War? E.g. the Alma class?

Hi Abdur, nice to see you around and I hope you can live with my efforts at resin surgery.
A few things have happened.
I have made the 134mm secondary guns out of some massively over scale 3"guns from the spare box.
Attachment:
secondaries.JPG
secondaries.JPG [ 9.5 KiB | Viewed 1655 times ]

The bridges and guns have been railed and are ready for their first coat of paint.

And as you can see here I will start working on the masts and bowsprit from the very basic sketch that I managed to find while the bridges are going through the paint and repaint process.
Once the masts are ready I can choose a base and actually start painting the hull. White paint does not take handling very well so i have postponed that until Victorieuse is almost on its base.

Interesting details - good to see them to support the few photos of the real ships.

A few things have happened over the past week. I have started to build up the masts. Even tough I am trying to use as much parts as possible from the original kit making masts out of the plastic rod included in the kit is a very bad idea as the masts will have to take rigging. So I have built them up in different thicknesses of stainless steel rod and built out and strengthened the platforms in brass rod.

And as I will be mounting her on a base shortly I have put the first layers of white paint to the hull. The masts in the picture are still not glued on and will remain so until the hull is screwed down.

How do you made the connections between the different parts of the masts? Are these small plastic parts?
