I started this a while back and since photobucket deleted their hosting, and it was repainted, thought I post a new thread.

Full Hull - some stuff was removed for painting.

I went with a monotone scheme using Tamiya Kure Gray, Dull Red Spray lacquer and Alclad Aqua Clear Gloss. The four decals were applied and it got a very light pin wash to try and pop some of detail using artist oil. Everything was sealed with Alclad Light Sheen. It really got too much paint, but the lacquer is pretty forgiving.

Thanks Guys, and any guidance appreciated. The last of the hull pieces (stern rail) cant be fitted till the aft deck is on. I never worked with a wooden deck, it went OK, but it just didn't drop in either; off just a hair at a couple points.

The Hasegawa CG51 has the pieces for Hikawa Maru. What's missing are the fore and aft gun platforms as far as I can tell for the Sub Depot version. The PE are the winch mounts which overlap the deck. The Artwox Models deck doesn't come with cargo hatch covers like the Hasegawa does.

Props and rudder. Props were painted Alclad Black Primer then Brass.

Better shot of the aft deck.

Promenade deck

Four doors to the stairs is all the PE the Promenade gets.

Look forward from the rear.

Hard to tell in the shot, but windows installed - also a set in the rear at the stairwell. Decided to use epoxy to mount them.

Promenade deck cabins. Windows were done with gloss black wash and artist oil for the rest. Difficult to see once boat deck is on.

Test fit of Boat Deck.
Image
Image
The two decks butt up against the front bridge. The bridge must line up with the hull sides as well as all the decks. Fit should be checked. Mine sat too high and I had to remove material front the bottom for it to fit right on the hull. I may attach it next and build it up instead as trying attach the whole assemble and find a fit error. We'll see.....

Decided to add just the bridge and stack the decks and cabins as I went. Was worried building the whole structure, when mating to the hull and other decks, might be a problem if I went by the instructions. Especially with parts pre-painted and decking applied. If you count the roof, the bridge includes 5 decks (or will). Right off the bat the bridge was sitting too high and material had to be taken off the bottom. May not be a problem for other builds, but it took me a long time to get fitted. I removed the boat deck the get to seams of the bridge and hull and super glued it in. Thankfully it lined with no putty or repainting needed. The last part that needs to line up to the hull is the first deck of the bridge and it lined up fine once the boat deck was fully seated and glued.

The promenade deck is line up with bridge opening awaiting stairs.

Thanks Dan and Mike. :wave_1:

Bridge deck. The pilot house and bridge windows have clear plastic pieces. You can't see into it once the upper deck is on, so I didn't bother detail or paint the wheel. You can't stack the bridge, it must slide in from the back along with the cabin under it. Fit is tricky too, I may have too much slope on the bridge ends.

Actual bridge deck.

These are the winch covers that came with the deck kit. They just make the platforms even with the deck. The aft gun base are included in the kit.

Moving aft trying to get the decking done. The various winches, vents, tie downs. Use Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color (black) on parts with any details with small brush.

Drilled out port holes. Pin Wash on doors.

Drilling out the port holes on the last deck.

Last of the wood decking. Promenade deck mostly populated. Does anyone know if those are sky lights on the top deck?

Interior photo is all I can find. That deck may be restricted for visitors.

Some goodies. The Bollards don't look right counter sunk into the deck. These are close, but the bases will have to be narrowed and shortened to match the ship's.

I think they're sky lights on the outside, but I'm not sure. It's been several years since I've been to the Hikawa Maru, and I only have a shot of the other end of that deck (yes it's closed off to visitors).

Hope this helps.

Many thanks George. I haven't added those pieces to the model yet. Hasegawa includes two different pieces of that assembly, one for the Hiye and Hikawa and a different one for the Heian. Will check it out tonight after work. Again many thanks George. :thumbs_up_1:

Yes to skylights. A common feature on the Japanese merchants.

Great work continues...........

Thanks Dan and George I think your right on the sky lights.

Image20180214_015441
According to the kit the Hiye and Hikawa would have retained the skylights while on the Heian they were deleted.

Bow
Image20180214_015125
Front bow eats up 12 of the 16 Bollards - floor got 3. They really don't need to be shortened just narrowed a bit. Thought they were too big, but look about right when compared with picture above.

Two PE pieces make the bottom of the Hawsepipe. Some pin wash done.

Fitted the bollards. Would have been much easier do before the deck is down.... Also adding all the kit's deck hardware and vents.

Image20180220_003225

Been doing the pieces in groups of 10 or so to avoid mixing things up. Light load tonight. Been only adding PE pieces that need to go on before final assembly. The stairs go from the boat deck down to the promenade and really won't be seen.
