And now, Fujimi plans its own 1/700 Yugumo release: http://www.fujimimokei.com/img/catalog.pdf

Which also means a future 1/350 version isn't too far fetched.

Fujimi has now released its own 1/700 Yugumo class kits. These are NEXT (snap together) kits, two in a box, colored parts, full hull option. The kits can be configured for either early or late war fit. The degaussing cable is the Uraga Dock Shipyard pattern only.

So far, I see it only on Hobbysearch Japan: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10498090

As I'm most curious about it, particularly as I have no experience with a NEXT type kit, I'm going to order a kit for review. Image courtesy of Hobbysearch Japan.

I have Fujimis Next Yamato and yes the kit is great, but also has it's downsides.
As a snap kit also small parts big attachment points and a big hole where you fit it.
So leaving the davits off, for example, than you have a big hole to fill on the deck.
That could be a problem in the kit with the paravanes and the cutters for example.
Also in the Yamato kit the big holes in the wing of the planes lead to sinkmarks. Something that wouldn't be the case in a normal kit.
And for a surprise the cutter in the Yamto kit where really flat, even the ones from the old W sprue looked better.

Greetings Christian

Thx for the input, Christian. Frankly, I'm not surprised to hear that a snap together kit loses some integrity and fineness when compared to a regular kit. I'm still curious, though.

I hope Fujimi releases a 1/700 Yugumo in their Seaway series soon. It seems like Fujimi has been investing heavily in producing snap kits (Fune Next series) and colored plastic variants (Easy series). I appreciate the company offering modelers of different abilities more choices, but I really NEED an updated, high-quality Shinano! :cool_2:

Looking forward to Dan's opinion on the new Yugumo just the same...

That review is probably about 3-4 months out, given the current backlog.

This just in from the Paul Allen expedition and the R/V Petrel, just finishing in Ormoc Bay, Phillipines. They have found one of the two Yugumo class DDs (Hamanami, Naganami) sunk during the TA 3 Operation, Nov 11, 1944. Early conjecture is that it may be Hamanami, but that's not a certainty. The ship is badly damaged forward, broken ahead of #1 TT mount. That description might actually fit Naganami's demise better, so stay tuned:

Petrel has now found the second Yugumo-class ship sunk at Ormoc Bay as well. Pics are on their Facebook page. Can't help but hope the other Leyte Gulf wrecks are in their crosshairs for this year!

Dan, is it known specifically which Yugumo units were completed with the larger bridge structures negating the need for the separate radar room below the main bridge? Was the separate radar room present only on as-completed units such as Hayanami or would earlier units like Naganami also receive that feature when updated with the type22 radar and new mast? Also, with respect to intra-war updates: were roll-off DC racks, additional AA bandstands, and radars all applied in the same refit or performed piece-meal as the war progressed?

Yes. Okinami, Kishinami, Asashimo, Hayashimo, Akishimo, Kiyoshimo. They were a second batch, construction for which began in the latter half of 1943.

If you are thinking about doing a late war version using the new Hasegawa kit, it may pay to wait a bit. The late war sprues set up suggests such a release at some point, as all is needed is the late war bridge. Hasegawa released its original DDs in sets of three different fits, so it makes perfect sense for them to do it again. Assuming they do, then Asashimo and Akishimo were both Fujinagata built, and would show the kit version of the degaussing cable.

The earlier units were retrofitted sometime in mid 1943 - early 1944. It's possible that Suzunami and Onami did not survive long enough to get the radar upgrades.

While I'm sure the preference was to do a comprehensive refit, I would think that piecemeal was more likely, particularly as it applied to the Type 22 radars. Type 22 radar production was spotty, so often ships got the foremast upgrade but had to wait for the radars. The Kageros are better documented in this regard. Yukikaze clearly got the mast upgrade before the actual unit was installed (her appearance in this fit at the Battle of Kolombangara was photographed afterwards at Rabaul). Isokaze has been documented as well in series of radio decrypts by Ultra.

My early comments on the new Fujimi Yugumo class kit are on the bottom of p.19 of the CASF Kagero class thread viewtopic.php?f=49&t=8806&start=360 . I will do a full review within the next few months.

In the meantime, as expected, Hasgawa has announced it's new late war version, as Asashimo. To be released at the Shizuoka show in May. I would expect it to have a proper later war bridge, and since the kit already uses the Fujinagata Shipbuilding Yard degaussing cable pattern, it will be correct for Asashimo.
