I hope it's soon! I'm ready for them. Here are a couple pics of Tern. She is coming along nicely and will make a great addition to this Dio.

And a couple of test shots with Mary and Okie.

Starting to work on the water base and set the ships aside. Pulling West Virginia out of the base, you can really get a good idea how badly she was damaged on the port side under the forward stack. I was shocked to read that she even took a bomb in this exact location that was a dud. I wonder what things would have looked like if that bomb exploded.

Very exciting diorama and in 1/350 is no easy feat. I have a resin BB-43 late war and it's some heavy stuff to work with and not too much good aftermarket details for sale. You're making this really good, and thanks for posting pics.

Fantastic work Jeff! You're building exactly what I'd like to some day, just wish they made all the required kits in plastic. Would make the modifications much easier.

Keep it coming!

Thanks guys! Kind of at a bit of a standstill right now, waiting for the forward masts to be released before I start really detailing both ships and permanently attaching them to the base. In the meantime, I'm experimenting with creating water geysers for my next project.
Here's a couple of test pics showing a torpedo explosion. I like how it turned out but it's not for this Dio.

This Dio will look more like this.

Working on another important piece to this scene. The tiny Panair XX-P seaplane tender always caught my eye whenever I looked at this photo. Her white color really made her standout amongst all the other ships and boats. I also recently noticed that there is another small service boat with some cool tire bumpers sitting next to Tern. I wish I had a better look at her so I can get an accurate representation of her as well. And... I just noticed that my "HOGA" nameplate is too big!

Here is my version of that boat.

A couple of years ago, I was considering doing a dio on Maryland and Oklahoma in the aftermath of the attack, but I gave up on it after seeing your rendition of it. :)
And I'm sure this diorama will turn out at least as wonderful as that one!

The torpedo hit effect looks very good too by the way.
What will be the subject of that project, if I may ask? :)

Cheers,

Marijn

Hi Marijn,
I wish you would give that Dio a try. I never want to deter anyone from building any model.

The next one has been started. It will be something similar to this pic.

Image

LONG way to go on it still. Still researching the location of all the bomb (and maybe a torpedo???) hits. Not much from the original model will be used.

Thanks Jeff, and no problem! I just feel like I couldn't add much to your rendition anymore, and there are too many other wonderful stories to be told…
If anything, your diorama has been an inspiration to me!

The next one looks very promising too! :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers,

Marijn

After about 8 months of burnout and now winter is coming, it is time to get back at this project. Went into the work room and found this waiting for my undivided attention.
Image

As you can see, Arizona has somehow muscled her way into this log. I have completely rebuilt her decks and I'm putting the finishing touches on her casemate bulkheads. She will have to wait her turn though, I have to finish Tenn and WeeVee first.
Image

I just ordered some more 3-D parts from Steve and as soon as they arrive I will continue this project and get it done hopefully before Spring hits again.

you must be doing her just before the bomb hit just forward of the #2 main turret. I see the split in the #2 barbette is just a bit higher compared to Revell's 1/429 scale Arizona.

As the anniversary of the attack is now just 2 days away, I find myself still distracted away from this dio by my Arizona build. Maybe I should rename this post "Tenn/WV/Ariz dio"! Here is the progress on her so far. Still a LONG way to go with her but I just wanted to give a shout out to Steve Larsen for his wonderful 3D printed parts!! I got an upgrade on the main turrets and went with the gray resin ones he offers. These are very nicely detailed.

Hi Gary,
Sorry for the LATE response. I took the summer off from modeling to spend as much time as possible outside. Now that summer is winding down I'll be back on the workbench soon. Sadly not much progress yet on the Tenn/WV dio but it will be finished soon. I also keep getting distracted by this one. Here I'm experimenting with how I want the first wave of bomb hits to look on this dio.

I’ve made another tough decision with this build. I am going to change out the cage masts yet again. This will be the fourth version applied to these two Battleships. Initially I was super excited when Blueridge released their printed mast, but something just didn’t look right after I added them to the ships. I quickly realized that the top of the masts were flared out way too much and was too big. Then Steve released his version of the mast and the top of his masts are much smaller than Blueridge’s. Here are pics comparing the two.

Can’t wait to see how these look on the ships. I’m also excited to try out the new US Navy figures from Blackcat. Just got these today and first impression is favorable.
