Really nice Hank! Amazing that the model can take longer than the actual ship construction. Interesting that the "New Jersey International" sign on the Helo Deck is read facing aft not facing forward as it would be seen by a landing Helo.
Cheers. Tom

Tom,

Well, it looks like I've been "hoisted by my own petard!" - you are correct, the NJI should be 180° in orientation. Sigh.... :doh_1: well, at least I have 2 more of those decals to work with. I used the CAD file for reference, not the actual photo of the pad. Too much going on right now and losing concentration. I'll try to repair next week. Thanks for the catch - I probably wouldn't have noticed it for a while.

Hank

Something I didn't know till recently is that Petard is a bomb or IED, so the expression refers to getting launched by your own bomb.

Yes - the reference is also an old school way of saying that someone has done himself in by his own actions, so to speak....a petard was originally described as a type of explosive device or grenade - either French or Spanish origin, I think.

Thanks - It's been a long haul, but perhaps this year I'll get it finished. Dec. retirement is approaching and I would like to be finished and this sitting elsewhere in a completed state!!!

FYI - it was in the mid-70's today - go figure!!!

Hank

So, last night I got a photo of the corrected Helo Pad:

Now, I'm searching for any information re. the Boat Davit winches used on NEW JERSEY in 1967-69. They were different than the original ones and the only photo I have doesn't really show them clearly:
Attachment:
BB62 Stbd Whaleboat in Davits 68 - Resized.jpg

This was taken in 1968 during her sea trials and the winch/motor is almost hidden by members of the crew. Any drawings/plans of the davit/winch/motor would be appreciated.

Hank

The last couple weeks I've been working on the forward Discone/Discage Antenna & support framework. Originally installed in 1968, it has had some minor alterations resulting in the current version aboard the ship now. My version will be what was installed in 1968-69.

I began with using brass rod as the framework, cryo gluing the various parts together:

Discone Ant Frame Brass_1.JPG

This proved disastrous as I dropped it and it came completely apart. Cryo simply doesn't get the job done and I didn't want to waste time trying to solder it, so..............Plan B!!

The framework is now styrene in various diameters as needed and has up to this point worked out well:
Attachment:
Discone Ant Frame Styrene_1.JPG

As of last night, I primed it and here it is sitting in place on the foc'sle:

I have now begun working on the antenna itself, which will be 1/16" dia. brass tubing with a styrene core enabling me to cut the brass where necessary to insert the antenna arms and lock them in place. Various antenna details (padeyes, hand rungs, arm gussets) will come from my custom designed PE sheet of parts, although may be a bit challenging to get installed without a few headaches along the way.

Well, six weeks or so later.... :doh_1:

I've finally got the Discone/Discage UHF Antenna finished and it was not without its own set of problems. I've had to rebuild the mast twice and have re-rigged the antenna wiring twice. I originally used a styrene rod inside the outer brass tube for the antenna mast. This was a mistake and I ended up finding a brass rod the right diameter to go inside the tube as the one-piece core of the mast. This was the second version and the one that is finished.

Only last night did I discover that the entire unit is a bit taller than the mast shown on the plans. Should I attempt to modify this? At this stage of the game, I'm not inclined to change anything (it would require removing approx. 1/4" of the mast length to correct it) as it is still a fragile, time consuming item to work with. Anyhow, here is a fairly good photo of the completed antenna:

Fwd UHF Antenna Stbd_1.JPG

Next on the schedule is tackling the main deck handrails/stanchions - I've begun the tedious process of folding/gluing the Pontos stanchions and will then cryo them to the railing sections prior to painting. This, of course, requires the use of the Opto-visor to see all these tiny parts. Doing perhaps 15-20 stanchions each night takes some of the monotony out of the task.

Martin,

I believe you're right. I was trying to be so careful...counting footrungs, etc. - the whole nine yards. Somehow the forest got in the way of the trees!!!

Hank, Hank, Hank -

Quite the road I've just discovered you're on and I've only made it to page 13 as yet but I wanted to jump in and say beautiful work! I had a quick question for you. I recently picked up a fiber glass hull kit of a 1/200 New Jersey and was wondering how usable would the hyper detail kit would be for the Trumpeter 1/200 Missouri. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Joshua

Joshua,

I appreciate the kind remarks!! Well, I'm not sure what the 1:200 fg hull consists of, who makes it, etc. I wasn't aware of any other hulls in 1:200 except for a 1:192 scale fg hull available from The Scale Shipyard.

You'll have to explain what this "hyper-detail kit" is for the Trumpeter MISSOURI - that's another new one on me!

Keep in mind my NEW JERSEY started out as the Trumpeter MISSOURI kit and with a LOT of bashing and scratchbuilding has been transformed into the 1967-69 configuration of NEW JERSEY. I guess it depends on what time frame you intend to build your model and once decided, you can then start looking at what will be needed to accomplish that goal.

Hope this helps....

Hank

Hi Hank,

Check out this website - I picked up this kit second hand but it's from this Chinese kit maker. http://www.tjmodels.com.cn/html/product ... ts/39.html

As far as the detail kit that I spoke of, check this out.
https://www.amazon.com/MK-1-Design-MISS ... B012BB8HUA

So I was trying to figure out similar the features would be from this detail kit to be able to apply it to a model of the USS New Jersey.

As far as what time period that I was shooting for, I'm still debating and frankly, I think i'm shooting for one that utilizes as much of the provided fittings as possible. Leaving scratch building for the optional extras, if that makes any sense. I'm already going to have to do a lot of customization for the lights, rotating turrets, and radar dishes as I'm planning on making this an RC model.

Hope that helps clear up any confusion. Thanks for your time!

Joshua

Joshua,

Well, the kit is of NEW JERSEY in her 1982-present configuration. The Detail set is from her WWII configuration. The detail set (some of it) could be used in the modern version, but I don't think you would be accomplishing much if you tried to make a WWII, Korean War, or mid-50s version from the kit you have. There is so much of the superstructure in the kit that was changed to the modern version that you would end up making more work (a lot more work!) for yourself - UNLESS you decide to build the modern version, in which case some of the detail set will help you out. I couldn't tell if the KIT contains the wood decks or not, but if it does, then you're ahead of the game.

Hope this helps,

Hank

Hank,

It does help a lot, thanks! This kit does not come with a wood deck - so that'll have to be something to tackle at some point. How helpful would it be to use the 1:200 Missouri Deck from Pontos? Thanks again for all your commentary!

Joshua

Joshua,

From the description & pictures of the Amazon.com A1 Detail Set, that comes with wooden deck. The problem is that it's the WWII version - much different than the current configuration. You could use it, but you will have many corrections to make and they will all be visible. OR....you could build the ship kit as is and simply spray the deck with the proper wood colored paint.

What you've got is a kit and detail set that DON'T MATCH UP as far as what they represent. You could try selling one or the other and then whichever you keep, purchase the correct (kit) or detail up set so that everything matches.

Since I served in NEW JERSEY, the time frame of my model was a no-brainer - I did, however, work with Pontos to create a modified WWII era wood deck set to work for my project. It would actually be closer to a modern NEW JERSEY than the present WWII version would be. Might be a thought. You would need to contact Pontos about purchasing a 1967-69 Era NEW JERSEY deck - I think that Kim (Pontos) still has it available.

Hope this helps,

Hank

OK, so while I haven't posted updates lately, I have been slowly working just the same. Big milestone Monday night - putting the superstructure on the hull unit permanently! I've now started putting small details on the deck & upper works such as life raft racks & packs, whip antennae, A/C crane and so forth. The mainmast - which I WAS going to replace with a Model Monkey 3D printed unit - I've decided to keep and possibly make some further refinements in place. Removing the existing one would prove harder to do in the long run. I will still replace the ECM Framework for the ULQ-6 with the PE parts which are much more refined than the existing plastic parts.

So, here is the model as of last night:

I've also got a Plexiglas case ordered from Specialty Plastics Fabrication in Hamilton, OH which should arrive late next week. Time to get the ship under cover!!
