Nothing like sunlight to bring out the best in a photo.

Looking very sharp! The deck bits are nicely done! Can't wait to see more progress.

Thanks Guys. :wave_1: Got the deck on the Boat Deck House mounted and the kit's deck hardware on. Got poor fit from the cabin to the lower boast deck, then it manifested by poor execution when attaching. Patched some deck already.

Sky lights in the gloss black. Most everything got a light pin wash.

I was wondering what the two back structure were with the raised rectangles were. They seem like a familiar feature. Are they vents or skylights?

Thanks Joe. Thanks Dan found a picture on the Travelocity Site that should be the front set toward the rear. I can see why these ships might be pretty vulnerable.

This type of illumination for the engineering spaces was pretty typical aboard all Japanese merchants. Great photo. Thx for posting.

Not a ton of progress, but another 25 parts on.

Image20180311_142738

Kit parts for deck above the bridge. Four 13mm Ammo Lockers, 110cm search light platform, and switched the kit's fire control with Veteran's. Vetern's Fire Control Set does not corespond to the armament the ship, I liked daintier look of them.

Just lacking the two twin 13mm, antenna, and still waiting for the 110cm Search light.

Life boat davits.

Thanks guys. :thumbs_up_1:

Veteran's 110 cm search light with the Fine Molds' 13mm twin guns. Veteran's Deck Lights fill the holes on the ends intended for Hikawa Maru's search lights. The holes should have been filled, but missed it.

Great work on the searchlights and towers. (Love those FM products.) I'm not sure what you have planned, but something to consider might be covering the searchlight tower railings with canvas. It was a common practice.

Thanks Dan. I was wondering what you thought of doing full life boats with all the deck lighting that the civilian version had. Also, do the skylights look right in gloss black or did they have covers that opened and shut. I am thinking now is the time to correct any issues. I did get some Tamiya LP-12 Lacquer paint, so I can airbrush now. It matches the spay and brush's very nice.
While I am being needy, what material is the best for railing covers and boat tarps? Thanks.

You mean like a night scene? As a warship? I suppose, though it would never have actually transpired as such, I would think. One of the MG Navy Yard mags has a build with Hikawa Maru at night, and lit up, IIRC.

Skylights: I don't know whether or not the skylights would have opened. One might think so, but I don't see latches and such in the photo above, so I'm not sure. I paint the skylights black in 1/700. Reminds me of the arguments about aircraft canopy - black - blue - grey? Everybody has an opinion.

Railing coverings: Since I haven't yet worked that detail in 1/350, I'm not sure how to advise you. A thick film of Tamiya paint works in 1/700, but it may not be workable in 1/350. Glue soaked paper is something I hear about all the time. I would think something very thin but strong, like rolling papers might work. Perhaps others might chime in.

Not the most helpful set of answers, I know.

Just to clarify the deck lighting are PE lights around the ship. I think there may 15 to 20 of them to add. For example there is a light at each of the 8 life boat stations. I was thinking of adding all life boats and fittings from the liner and what was added to the conversion.

I'm not really familiar with all the PE provided for this kit. I see no reason why you shouldn't do it if you want, though I don't think Hiei Maru actually retained all of those boats during wartime service.

Modeler's choice.

Nice stuff, did your wooden deck detach itself around the edges after a few months?

The fore and aft gun platforms with the four 15cm/50 41st years guns. Heian Maru probably had an armament change at the time she got her dazzle scheme and also got a degaussing cable around the hull. I don't see any changes for Hie Maru of original armament.

Image20180325_230933
Front 15cm platform. The Artwox set has the wood deck for the platforms where the Hasagawa wood deck kit does not. The Artwox also includes wood decks for all the auxiliary boats.

Image20180325_231544
The waist guns. Used the Master's 41st year, they are designed for the Kongo and the white covering may include some of barrel, so they may be too long.

Rear, both platforms still need ladders. Still needs some touch up on the bent railing too, after a fall to the floor.
