Still working away at the hull and progress seems to be slow, as there is so much work, just getting everything right. I am not particulary pleased with this hull, as I have had to alter certain parts of it, to get it looking like the plan, as best as I can.
But most of the alterations are now complete and I can concentrate on getting the rest of the decks and bulkheads fitted. I have put in a few of the gallery decks and managed to get No1 Pom Pom Platform in the right place. Both forward searchlight platforms are also now fitted. Tomorrow I will be working on the main boat stowage galleries and crane platforms, again, these have had to be moved as they were too far forward on Deans hull, so I have managed to get them as near as the plan as possible.

This is part of one of the gallery decks and the other photo shows a short one on the opposite side, that has still to be finished.

A full length view of some of the work, note the No1 Pom Pom platform

And a veiw of the forward flight deck with No1 Pom Pom platform fitted, you can also see the searchlight platforms fitted forward of the 4.5 inch gun platforms

I hope to have some better pictures next time.

Yes she is starting to shape up a bit , but I have had a right performance, trying to get thing's in the right place. This hull was not thought out properly, when it was made. At least it will be looking much better when I have finished altering everything.
After this week, she will be laid up for a while.

Hi Geoff, Considering you have not scratchbuilt a full ship yet, you are making miraculous progress, getting better all the time. :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo: :jump_1: :jump_1: :wave_1: :thumbs_up_1: ARH

Thank's Ron, I would have made more progress, if the hull had been right in the first place, most of the work has been altering things, but it is starting to come together now. :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo:

Thank's Dave :thumbs_up_1: I think I have got thing's more or less sorted out now and I can start getting the rest of the framework finished.
I couldn't get this finished, until I knew where everything was supposed to fit. That's why I am a bit behind on getting this done, as I have had to alter things around to best ressemble the proper plans.

Hells teeth Victorious, I've just taken a gander at your latest photos. and at the rate you're building at you'll have it practically finished by the 2nd April.

Reckon you must have power to both elbows at this rate. Looking forward to seeing you and the model. Great stuff!

Thank's Howie :thumbs_up_1:

Well as Howie said at the rate I am going, it will at least be much further on than it was a few weeks ago, when I just had the bare hull.

Today, I have really cracked on and manged to get most of the gallery decks fitted and have quite a lot of photo's to show you in this update.

First, I put in a couple of decks for the galleries as shown in these first few photo's

Here you can see one of the decks in position with clamps to hold it secure until the glue dries.

Image

Here you can see the bottom and top deck of the same gallery, fixed in place. The back or inside bulkhead will be fitted much later, so that I can add various fittings, which will make it easy to access.

Image

The next job I tackled, actually comprised of major surgery, to the hull. It is where the main boat galleries are situated. Deans hull, had these in the wrong place, so I decided to remove part of one side so that it could be corrected, then did the same to the opposite side, so that they both now match up, as they should do, going off the official plans.
I also had to make an outrigger for the port side boat crane, as Dean's had only moulded one on the starboard side.

This is the new outrigger, than was made from a block of balsa, then shaped and covered with filler and bonded to the side of the hull. Note that the top part of the hull side has been cut away, this is to set the outrigger at the right position and allow the correct boat stowage openings. This will be corrected later.

Image

These two pieces of wood are shaped to sit on top of the outrigger, which will form the boat crane platforms. The slots allow the whole peice to fit either side of the hull along the bottom edge and thus form the deck of the boat galleries. ( saves having to make two separate peices )

Here you can see one of the peices in place

After I had put these in place, I thought I would take the Vic outside for a breath of fresh air, so I set it up on the patio table for a few outside shots, of the work so far.

And just to finish off this posting, I thought you might like to see some of the fittings that I aquired, when I bought the hull. These are cast in resin, and have yet to be cleaned up and other parts added to them, but I have taken a few photos of three different fittings and where they will be eventually placed.

One of four pairs, of twin 4.5 inch gun turrets

Image

One of four, 40 inch searchlight ( might do away with these and fit working ones, eventually)

Image

On of six, 4 barrel pom pom gun mounting

I think we have created a monster, he,s worst than jack the ripper, Its beginning to look like a carrier now, not just a deans hull, its at this stage that the model always looks a bit rough, we all go though this stage, but few show it, keep up the good work, its looking rearly excelent. :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo: :wave_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Thank's Dave and Ron for your encouraging comments.

The way I look at it is, if you don't show the rough with the smooth, no one can see what needs to be done whilst building it.
It's all well and good showing a nice photo, of something finished, but how you arrive at the finished model, needs to be explained.
If you Ron, hadn't shown how you added things to the Iron Duke, it would be hard to visulise how you got it looking like it is.
Your method's have certainly helped me with the Marlborough, and now I am completely on my own with Victorious, it's your knowledge that I have gradually picked up on.
Consisdering, I started with a hull, that needed a certain amount of butchering and changing to get it looking more like the proper drawing, has not been easy, but I have overcome most of the problems.
Although there are some changes, I cannot possibly make ( reposition the Island ) without building a complete new hull from scratch, I am at least satisfied, that I have done what I can, to make it as accurate as I can. :thumbs_up_1:

Carrying on from where I left off, I have now got both sides of the boat gallery decks fitted, just a matter of making the new centre parts, which I cut out from the hull.

Other work done was reshaping the rear 4.5 inch gun platforms, to match the plans. These had been cast level with the top edge of the hull and should have been put 1/2" lower, also, they were not wide enough.
Work is still continuing on this part, as the whole assembly has to be reshaped, which will be done using balsa and body filler, to get them at the right angle.

Here you can see that I have cut the top of the original platform to enable me to lower it. Note the peice removed, on the edge of the flight deck

This is the new top platform of the port side, which has been made to the correct width, it is held in place, using body filler paste.

Image

Image

Here you can see it from a side on view. More work using balsa and filler has to be done, to get it looking right.

Image

Here are a few shots of the finished boat gallery decks, just the outside framework to fit yet.
