With the new Revell PT-109 being released, please note that highly detailed and accurate 3D-printed torpedo tubes and Bliss-Leavitt Mk.8 torpedo warhead inserts are available for Revell PT Boat kits.

For those that would prefer only to replace their kit's poorly detailed torpedo tube breech doors, but keep the kit's tubes, a set of four breech doors is also available. It is not yet known if these breech doors will fit the new Revell kit's tubes well.

A PT-109 nameplate with decorative nautical rope border is also available. It can be made in real metal (brass, bronze, silver, 14k gold-plated, 18k gold-plated, or rhodium-plated) or inexpensive acrylic. Acrylic easily accepts paint in the colors of your choosing.

Happy modeling!

Happy to announce an island for USS Hornet CVS-12 is now available in 1/350 scale. The island was in this configuration during recovery of the Apollo 11 astronauts and the Apollo 12 astronauts in 1969. The island is intended to help modelers build USS Hornet CVS-12 from the Gallery Models 1/350 USS Intrepid CVS-11 kit.

And one more, whopping 68-pounder carronades for HMS Victory, complete with King George monograms.

Do you think that is possible to print carronades and other guns of the time around 1800 in 1/700?

Hi Lars,

Unfortunately, the cannons and carronades are not printable by Shapeways in 1/700 scale.

Shapeways' minimum diameter requirement for printing is 0.6 mm. An object smaller than that will likely be damaged or destroyed during cleaning and handling at the factory. In 1/700 scale, the narrowest diameter of of the barrel of a larger cannon like a 24-pounder, for example, is ~0.48 mm, too small to meet the 0.6 mm printing requirement. The trunnion diameter is less than 0.2 mm and the barrel wall thickness is also only about 0.2 mm at its narrowest point. This means that even if the cannons and carronades could be printed, they would have to be designed solid and without any detail like trunnions or buttons (the knob at the breech) in order to survive cleaning and handling at the factory.

If they could be printed in 1/700 scale, being about 1/2 mm in diameter, they would probably be very difficult to handle easily by the typical modeler.

I think the smallest practical scale for printing 1800-ish cannons and carronades is something like 1/200 scale.

Thank you for the reply! For sure details would be lost, but if even the diameter of a 24 pounder is too small, the only alternative are brass barrels - or carve some from plastic. I was only asking because I would like to scratch built some ships of that period - not projects to be done soon, but for sure they will be done. The models already built have mainly plastic gun barrels.

When you are ready, I will make cannons for you that are bigger than 0.6 mm in diameter!

Thank you very much! Do you thought about the 1860s and 1870s guns? E.g. Wampanoag had 60 pounder and 9 in guns, Trenton hat 11 in guns. Also still only ideas, but I hope that I will get better plans of these ships.

Congratulations to Paul Allen and his team in discovering the wreck of USS Lexington CV-2!

Previously to the publishing of video and photos of the wreck, 3D-printed round-end 1.1" "Chicago Piano" splinter shields were available in 1/700 and 1/350 scale. The 3D designs were based on Pearl Harbor Navy Yard plans. Now that we know with certainty that the PHNY drawings accurately capture the correct shape of the splinter shields' round-ends, I've integrated the splinter shield products with the existing 3D-printed Lexington island and funnel products in 1/700 scale and 1/350 scale.

A set of splinter shields is also available separately.

Sailing warship fans! Here are some renderings to help with painting cannons and carronades. The wooden components of carriages and skeads were sometimes painted other colors such as red and yellow ocher, even green or blue. Check your references to know which colors are correct for the ship you are modeling.

Thanks, Mardis! I hope you will be thrilled with your new island! Can't wait to see you begin the build. Forrestals rock.

In other news, I'll be posting some renderings of the USS Pennsylvania BB-38 (1945) superstructure today as it nears completion. I regret it has taken far longer than expected to research and design. It is one of the more challenging designs I've done so far. But I hope you'll find that it is well worth the wait. Thanks to Chad Queen, Martin Quinn and Gabriel Djinn for superb references (excellent 2D plans, a host of hi-res photos, and loaning me a Dragon 1/700 kit).

To those who have been patiently waiting for it, thanks!

Can't wait to see the finished product for the Pennsylvania's superstructure. Will those funky shaped 20mm gun tubs between the 5"/38 twin mounts be on the product?

Thanks, Bio!

Here you go. In 1945, the tubs between the 5" mounts were occupied by Mk.57 directors.
