Kajika managed to produce a stellar kit that scratched two of my major itches: Japanese battleships and the Great War. Much has been said with how ridiculous Flyha--erm, Kajika's new options are, and I'll just add that they're almost entirely correct, save for a PE fret that has some fit issues along the upper deck.
I built Kongo as she may have looked in route to Japan, having recently been completed. The sea base was used to experiment with some coloring ideas and I plan to add more dimensionality to my next build with some other ideas I'm toying with. While I like foam blocks for 1/350, the waves are often waaaaay to large for a 1/700 ship.
Modified bits:
- Brass top masts and yardarms
- Added a cigarette paper-based tarp to the bridge
- Awning supports from the spare box
- Boat and crane blocks from Ocean Spirit
- Eduard figures. I got lazy with the 3D printed ones.
- Rigging from Infini line and stretched sprue.
I almost gave up the hobby and sold my stash last year, putting Kongo up on a shelf 70% completed. After several months, I started work on a 1/350 Shimakaze (with Infini PE) and found myself back in a groove. I suspended that project to get this kit done.
