Here is one more pic. Have a compressor situation - need to buy a new one, so things are a bit on hold but at least I got this better shot showing the level where were at. Im gonna paint decks next since thats ok to do by hand for now. A bit slowed back by lack of anchor chains also and i drilled out the hawese pipes too much so need to fill these up a little.

Looking sharp! What are you doing with the deck for the wood effect? For some reason I though you were using a wood deck.

Thanks! painted deck tan, now given it a wash, and now gonna get hand painting planks individually. Not using wood deck stickers!

This is my interpretation of Hoods deck as sunk. Hope you like it, feedback welcome. Getting this part done encourages me to keep on building.

Should I lighten it up? or it is ok this dark? Feedback welcome!

Here is the latest progress. Painted the decks, added anchor chains, and lower deck is prepped for PE and railings.

Put it next to my Bismarck just to see the comparison.

Update time:

Have restarted work on the mighty hood after few months away from it.

Got back to rebuilding the admirals bridge and installed splinter shields. As for the upper platform ladder openings I probably dont do anything. Just not worth the hassle, Id rather focus the time on getting the paint right and rigging and such. Im not so thrilled on funnels though not sure the extras from shapeways at 20 bucks worth it, nice as they are. However they are quite prominent...

Update on superstructure... Coming along nicely, need to clean up the putty, lower the shields a bit and start building the upper mast itself. Installed ladders etc... hard to work in this scale but also fun.

used PE for main superstructure, and some small wires to simulate all the tubes running along it in real life. its may be a little messy but I think its ok. 1/700 needs to look right from 50 cm away!

As for starfish / I know it is out of scale with those supports but I have looked carefully at the alternative in PE and it looked like a nightmare to build. So some sacrifices are made. :cool_1:

I decided that the starfish in this scale just didnt pass the test. So... cue an hour and half build of one out of PE.

Result! Im much happier now with how it looks. It is a major component of the ship and I figure that now it looks right. Also fairly sturdy. gonna double proof it with some diluted PVA glue and then paint time!

Dude, I bought your funnels and turrets, didnt I? From shapeways. Very cool! Thank you.

Completed the Main mast PE (though the top platform Im not sure which way should look, front or back... probably back but too late to change. :)

Awaiting now for secondaries and funnels from Shapeways. Current ones look so crude I figure I might as as well upgrade further. I seriously would not recommend this kit in current shape.

And few shots of current state of affairs...

Trying now to figure out how many boats need to be covered with canvas. Thoughts and tips?

Most recent WIP shots are below. Tried to simulate hull plating with paint build up on the bow as well and painted the main superstructures. Lots more to go...

Final pic before holidays. Ill have to take some proper non iphone ones at one point as High ISO settings arent so impressive on a big screens...

To do list includes
* PE railings
* PE pom-poms and rocket launchers
* PE ladders here and there
* derricks to be scratch built.

I used 3D printed parts for the following:
* Main guns
* Secondary guns
* Funnels

After that some weathering and rigging. A fun build taken more than 6 months but its come together more or less by now and im happy I went super detailed flyhawk on it as I havent seen many dont this way before. cheers!

Closer and closer to completion.

Need to install sea boats and davits, and get to railings and rigging.

Flyhawk 1/700 railings manual is NOT available in the PE set I bought, if anyone has instructions how to place railings please let me know! :wave_1: Really it seems like my manual is missing a page, despite that it is 4/4 according to Flyhawk. Very frustrating manual as it is, and missing number of instructions make it even tougher.

These are iphone zoom pics so excuse the poor quality. Once the ship is finished I will make sure to use a proper camera for this and set my lighting a little better.

Thanks!

The small update is Im now rebuilding the aft mast to make the derrick crane low position. it is a forced measure, after I dropped the mast into a tool box, closed the tool box and cue a lot of swearing a week after I couldnt find it on the ship... It was so silly. Now I gotta rebuild the upper mast with antennas and the crane with its gears. oh well. I was lucky that some parts were reinforced in brass and core survived, including the delicate starfish. The best bit I did was coating it in PVA glue before painting, and it held up. So thats a lesson, never build PE without PVA reinforcement where possible.

with added hull plating detail, using paints basically. It came off a little off scale but I think better than the dull red hull on its own.

Still need to these few things:
- install the lifeboats on the upper deck
- reposition carley floats on the forward funnel
- add timber storage around aft funnel
- may be add metal barrels as the 3D printed ones look to be sagging a little bit, not nice
- add flag staffs
- make flags
- built up main mast upper part radar (that part has been broken off too many times I care to admit)
- add biscuit life preservers somewhere... not sure where

Pretty much it. I know there is some inaccuracies here and there but by this point I gotta call it, as it has been a year long project.

Added the timber storage to the funnel. It is not super accurate but adds visual detail I think and also make the ship a little more "alive".

I just chopped up a bunch of toothpic parts and mixed it up with some discarded PE bits and wire to make it a little less homogeneous.

PS. Yeah, I was lazy to rebuild the wire antennas :) I figured this area looked to be holding a lot of rigging and I wanted it to be strong. Cutting corners.
