The Gift Horse or Glory at Sea: Raid on St. Nazaire

Post by Captain_Peachfuzz »

Watched "The Gift Horse" or "Glory at Sea" with Trevor Howard and Richard Attenborough on Amazon Prime last night about the Raid on St. Nazaire by HMS Campbeltown and British Commandos. Good WWII retelling of our donating WWI Class 4 stackers to the Royal Navy and the story of a Captain and his crew and an "Old Rust Bucket" that come together after a series of Bad Luck. Highly recommend it!!

The US did not donate the 4 stackers. They were traded to the UK. To donate would have violated neutrality laws.

The UK got 50 old and mediocre (at best!) vessels in return for 50 bases around the world. Another of Churchill's great deals. Roosevelt saw him coming a mile off!
In 1757 Admiral John Byng was shot "pour encourager les autres". Voltaire
