Well if the Tosa had those kind, then the Amagi would also had the same.

I recall a rumor about Fujimi making a Tosa-class kit. Was that accurate and placed on the backburner? Has a resin company ever done one?

Well, back on page 3 of this thread, Atma mentioned it as "Definitely a summer release" back in 2011...

Still waiting on this one. You'd think it'd be an obvious subject for Fujimi to follow through with. Like a 350th Soryu, or Hyuga, or Hiei...

Props to them, though, for delivering the 1/700 3-deck Kaga. Never dreamed we'd get one of those in injection!

Hello Dan and all,

When it comes to the later two members of the Amagi class, namely the cancelled Atago and Takao, if one were to build a kit of either of them, did their designs more resemble the Amagi or Akagi Fujimi 1/700 battlecruiser kit? Yes there are some small differences between the two kits.

All 4 were each built in different yards.

I did my best to research this, but I've come up with nothing to suggest the latter pair would have departed from the original design as built. Modifications down the road during refits, such as the speculative trunked funnels, would have been the most likely point of differentiation.

Speaking of as-designed, I did come across remnants of the original plans, below. I also posted the current kit and gallery list at the start of the thread. A bit sparse at this point.

Im sure the trunked funnel or large smoke caps/deflectors will be implemented before launching. By the time IJN Takao and IJN Atago will be ready, the problem of smoke interference will be evident by IJN Nagato class units.

Thank you Dan and Atma for the input.

Still, which of these two trunked funnels from 2 separate Shapeways vendors would you recommend?

Hard to say. I can't help but wonder if they might not have opted for the S curved funnel. Though, that was to rectify an existing design on the Nagatos.Yet, they could have also opted to trunk the Nagato/Mutsu funnels and chose not to.

I think I'm officially giving up on Fujimi ever releasing their alleged 2011 announced Tosa. I've got an old garage "kit" that's a rough approximation of the vessel. Are there any other decent resources outside of the Japanese-only 8-8 plan book? It has great plan views, but I'd like to learn more about the vessel.

There are the Hiraga side and plan views, some specs, not much more. What are you looking for, exactly?

If I'm being honest? I'm not entirely sure. The resin kit I have I think assumes a speculative WWII fit.

Here's what the "kit" came with, sans the 1926 Nagato bridge I added for giggles:

I want to make this nice. That's what I want.

No doubt. However, all the available information is as-designed. So, I'm not sure what I can provide to you regarding speculative fits.

Yeah...

The hull appears mostly correct, per Hiraga drawings. Her casemates are... odd, however. I'm unsure if I'll try to correct or live with the hull problems. At the end of the day, I'm not going to trash a "kit" I payed [redacted] for.

I believe these are in the Japanese language book on the 8-8 plan I have, but in such a high resolution. Thank you! I'm seeing details I would have missed.

You bet. Kaga's as well, though not as crisp.

So, would that be the case that the Amagi would have had the same upgrade?

More than likely, yes.
