next step is looking what has to be done using computer ...let this be clear...I don't use plans to be 100% exact...(and doing only 1 project in my life lol)
it will be a mere visual approach...so in taking pictures of both...bringing them to same size...I now can see better...what to do and where to modify without re-doing the entire hull...luckily...the revell hull is a bit too low from bottom to deck...giving me the possibility to add and form some roundings as the revell is a bit square

I don't see much trouble in the bow...even if a bit narrow....main hassle will be rear part...the revell is realy ...very square and wrong

Ive had about 6 kits survive my childhood: 2 tanks, 2 subs, and 2 warships. Ive by now restored ALL of them to a point where they look totally fine in a display case. They also served as test dummies for technique. I really like restoring old kits. They look like crap, the stuff I did when I was small, but too dear to throw out. So either bottom of some drawer or ... work to make them brand new.

Good luck here, hope it will turn out according to your expectations!

I did this too a while ago, maybe these pictures can show you some attention points.

This we did because of this review, somebody had issues fixing the deck: https://www.amazon.co.uk/product-review ... ewpoints=1

The propulsion I used came from a Trumpeter 1/700 Theodore Roosevelt.

TXxs mate, seen your transformation somehow before somewhere...me I'm gonna lime away some of the rear-bottom so that the "fins" don'tgo below ...I know...thats gonna take time and will be difficult...but hey...isn't that the challenge lol
can you show top level modifications?

This model was built as an introduction of my nephew to modelism, I let him choose a model and was not aware of the mould age of this reboxing. I had none of my reference because I was on vacation at his place, but I had all my tools because I was building Revell's Wiesel 2 LeFlaSys with an Eduard upgrade set there. The paint for the ship had to be bought at the toy shop too, I decided to go for a standard acrylic tubes set. The hull I was able to adapt in a few hours of work, but adapting the superstructure would just go too far. My nephew had to be able to start painting the model rather sooner than later, he might have lost interest in it if I presented it as too difficult and fiddly. In earnest I didn't know how to fix the molded-on rows of AA and the rigging running through to holes in the deck.

Image

The only thing I decided that we should replace was the parabolic antenna on the mast, I think I had prepared some aluminium foil to make it look thinner. That never made it to the model, though, because after the ship was painted, he went on to buy some other models and forgot about this one. I didn't really mind because this kind of reconstruction is rather for more experienced modellers. I was already glad the ship made it to this stage:

Image

Of course, the painting of the superstructure would have been much better if the ship was masked off properly and if enough time was spent on it. We made a more convincing approach on a 1/72 Trumpeter Challenger 2 that did get finished, though.

Image

I think, if I would tackle that superstructure, I'd begin with removing the smallest AA guns and try to get to something similar but not too expensive to replace them. I'd drill out the smoke stacks and the searchlight platforms on them and look for some railing. When I started to upgrade my ship's kits and had no PE, I used the mesh that's put in windows to keep out insects. If cut to ribbons, this doesn't look bad on 1/700 models, like this Tamiya Rodney.

(original build log: https://www.modelbrouwers.nl/phpBB3/vie ... 5&start=20)

You could also improve the cranes, planes and the catapults at the back, but this can get quite cumbersome. This example shows a 1/700 Revell DoY (also a quite basic model without any fine detail OOTB, necessitating a lot of sanding to remove tapering of superstructure parts) with cranes woven entirely with copper thread. But even a less detailed replacement could do, if you succeed at making the structure translucent in stead of blocky.

yeah, I already bought the AA 20MM guns, railings and US radars....I think of doing all quadruples scratch...so it will get more complex as initially I thought of doing..
gonna take my time with it..when bored of doing same gun again and again...just do something else for a bit until again excited to do some more

I have to say I'm enjoying this thread. This reminds me of when I was getting seriously back into ship modeling in my teens and would try to correct the inaccuracies and omissions in those old kits, and started experimenting with stretched sprue and sheet plastic and other things. I have a Revell Missouri upstairs that I bought a few years ago with plans to "correct" it someday, just for the fun of it, so in a way this thread is reading my mind. Thanks for bringing back the memories and I look forward to how this thread continues.

I just bought scale 1/535:
5"/38 cal. Mk.28 and Mk.37 Directors, "Angle-back" from Model Monkey 3D-printing
decided to buy the guns as one 5" gun is missing...its... or make all new...or try to scratch build it exactly the same...witch is not sure to be easy...lol
and the directors...well...as I already ordered one thing...better use the posting already payed for.....in adding some more, also bought the 1/400 Bismarck main guns with blast bag...have that one ...and Tirpitz in waiting for the make.
that way I can see difference and decide if I go for more 3D printed stuff

and yes I saw the quadruple guns @ 3dmodelpart....but they are out of stock
the 20mm..I bought the 1/500 PE from WEM...need to build one before I stick to them or buy the 3D model ones

next I'll be making ribs for the roundings....and cover it all with the plastic 1mm greensomethingname and finish it with mastic.....and a lot of sanding
the rear is gonna get way more rounding so more cutting away from original hull...but hey...taking it step by step...problem after problem.

as I said...its gonna take tiiime ...a whole lotta precious tiiiime...its gonna take patience and time , to do it...to do it, to do it, to do it wriiiiiite
sorry...got caried away thinking of a George Harrison's song lol

I first was gonna cut whole rear....but then I thought better to keep as much of hull as possible...matter of fixing and strength.
I won't keep the steps either
