Calling all JMSDF Izumo-class (いずも) DDH / CVM fans

Post by D-Boy »

Hasegawa releasing the first ship in a new DDH class, JMSDF Izumo, summer 2015 in 1:700. Notable distinction from ships in the previous class - outboard elevator, starboard, behind island.

This initial post to the thread edited to reflect comments below.

Re: Calling all JMSDF Hyuga class helicopter destroyer !

Post by Dan K »

Izumo is actually the lead ship of a new, larger class of DDH - 248m/814ft LOA vs. 197m/646ft LOA. She's the size of IJN Kaga, albeit with less displacement. (I agree with many who believe it is disingenuous to call these ships helicopter destroyers but, I understand, it's semantics and politics.) Note to moderator - perhaps revise the thread name to include the Izumo class? OR, perhaps start a new one?

A nice pic of her from Wikipedia as well as a size comparison photo that I assume is Photoshopped.

That comparison shot is photoshopped. The wakes on the two JMSDF ships are identical. Looks like they took the Hyuga and modified it to the Izumo.

This may be news (not sure) but the 2nd ship has been named "Kaga"

JDS Kaga (DDH-184) is a helicopter carrier (officially classified by Japan as a helicopter destroyer) and the second constructed ship in the Izumo class of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF).[1][2][3] Her namesake arises from Kaga Province (??? Kaga no kuni?) in present-day Ishikawa Prefecture.

Yes, the new ship's name is Kaga. My gut feeling is that this ship would have gotten the original armored cruiser Idzumo sister's name, Iwate, but for the current political situation vis-a-vis China. Kaga as a name for a carrier is a highly charged choice.

Hi guys,
So I have a few 1/350 kits finished and on hold. I completed the DDH 182 Ise a year or so back, my question is a bit vague but perhaps someone may have an insight?
Will we see a 1/350 DDH Izumo or Kaga?

Thanks in advance

I think you can count on it. It's just a question of which company gets theirs out first.

Just curious here:

Why is the flight deck number "83" instead of "183?"

Same question for earlier JMSDF flat tops. Why is the flight deck number different? Why is the "1" in the hundreds place omitted in the flight deck number? (i.e. JDS Hyuga flight deck number "81," hull number "181")

From the looks of her she appears to be about the size of LHD or the new LHA class. Since they only make this in 1/700 to my knowledge I think it would make a nice piece in 1/350 but to make this would require two kits at 200.00 plus dollars I will wait. But Aside from the elevator being moved from the center line to AFT of the island. Does this class still have AFT VLS Module and I see the CIWS mounted on the bow which I never understood it location. I should have be either on the island or on a platform Like the LHA/LHD's.

can do.

I found the first half of this sentence most interesting:
In March this year, the ruling LDP called upon the Japanese government to develop its own aircraft carriers and operate F-35B aircraft, which has been thought to include refitting the Izumo class.

So, here's a nifty conversion set for everybody who purchased a 1/700 version prior to the authorized conversions:

I'm thinking it just might be ok to move this thread now .........
