Hey Sean,
yep self contained cartridge - I get what you mean. But as you can see in the photo of the Waterhen, the projectiles appear to be stored separately - there are only projectiles in the racks. So what was in the wooden boxes - must be the propellant in the cartridges.
.
The guns I used had separate cartridges so you could remove any amount of charge bags as needed given the distance the target was. Get the correct charge and then mate the cartridge to the projectile and load. So where was the ammo mated together - was it already to go from the magazine or as you say were the projectiles on the rack shown for emergencies if the action continued.....
.
I am sure a simple search engine search will clear any ambiguity up or a simple question on the V and W Destroyer thread on this site. If you find the answer let me know!
.
Thanks for the compliment on the work so far. I really wouldn't want to find out how much I have spent so far. But I feel I am over the hump, just need to get the RC gear...
.
I put the final coat of paint on the forward superstructure. I am using simple household spray cans and I did a test spray before applying but when I started it all came out in lumps on the port side. I will just have to put it down to painted over rust.
.
Cheers Will

US Navy terminology:

Fixed Ammunition: the projectile and the powder casing were mated together as a single unit. Smaller bore rounds were often fixed ammunition. The 20 mm, 40 mm and 3"/50 were fixed ammunition.

Semi-fixed ammunition: the projectile was separate from the powder case. Larger caliber rounds would be too heavy to handle if fixed. The powder case was a brass tube that could carry different powder charges for different ranges. The 5"/38 and 6"/47 were semi-fixed.

Bag ammunition: The projectile is separate from the powder. The powder is in cloth bags. The number of bags varied with the range, elevation, etc. Very large caliber guns often used bag ammunition, but not always. At Jutland the British were using powder in bags and the Germans were using powder in brass cases.

Thanks Phil,
I am guessing the ammo was semi-fixed, like the guns I was using.
.
I am continuing to detail the forward superstructure and am playing around with different tapes to see what to use on the lower and upper bridge canvas coverings. Its amazing to see what a bit of paint and a bit of detailing does to the models progress. The photo really brings out the spattered paint....
cheers, Will

I have been umm and ahhing about what to use for the canvas on the railings for ages and then bit the bullet. I just dont have the time to do as good a job as I have seen other modelers do, so I chose to use Trade Painters masking tape. The photos were my first go at it and yes I could have done better. I will tidy up the inner top railings. fill the upper bride with equipment and I think that once I cover the whole outside with splinter mattresses, it wont look too bad. Tell me what you think or if there is a better way,
cheers, Will

Hi Will, gee I was sure out only saw a close up pic, after seeing the last pic of your Destroyer taken looking down from the gun in placement to the funnels, can see now what you saw those boxes are. WOW you are going great guns , being busy like I have at last I have finished building from the raised deck to shelter cover, am glad that job is out the way, will look a lot better when the whole bow is finished and sanded smooth.

Hard work trying to size the scale from a smaller plan, next ship will have proper plans, on a high.

Is it raining down there, cool MP's down in Canberra, rain coming in this weekend and had to be the weekend we are going away for up to Caloundra, taking the good SLR digital camera this time, she has a very good lens 1440 mm zoom, get some good ship pics

Keep the good work up, you are progressing well.

Tony

Hello again,
I fitted the canvas to the railings on the vickers quad mount and did a much better job of it. I dont know how durable they will be but I have given both sides a few coats of paint so we shall see.
.
I had some splinter mattresses 3D printed and am in the process of installing them. I think they have come out very well. Got to go - putting the kids to bed...
Cheers, Will

Hi Wii, wow you sure did a great job putting that canvas on the gun mounts and what a paint job can do to bring out all the detail, I am not that far away form finishing the first section of my build, have some progress pics to post on my post.

How much more work have do you got to do with detail, the main guns are very impressive, indeed, of course will you have a gun crew loading the guns ready to fire.

Going over to my post post to add the latest update pic, blow you away.

Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the finished model.

Take care Tony.

Hello again,
I finally bit the bullet and put the hull in the water, at my children's primary school pool. which thankfully is in walking distance. Sure enough there is one small leak, at the keel where it angles up towards the stern. Otherwise she is all watertight. I had a big piece of steel that you see in previous posts to see how much ballast I will need but it didn't make any difference - the hull is going to need alot of ballast to get it to the right level. It was a momentous day for me to get the hull wet. I will never look at a scratchbuilt RC ship the same way - alot of time, effort and patience,
cheers, Will

All things considered, that's a solid *win*. Nice job on the mechanics, as well as the aesthetics.

Hi Will, wow she looks good in the water, that is your son and in the back ground , the trouble with model boats you need a lot of ballast to get here down to the water line, the real ships use water, don't think will work with model boats. Are you going to put in props and power her, a lot of modelers use batteries for weight , good you only had one leak and luck to use your sons school swimming pool.

Did you see on the news tonight the we got a new warship Destroyer named HMAS Brisbane, be a good ship to model.

I am on a high have finished all the bulkheads on the firsts section of my ship what a mile stone indeed , can't close the sides in till I build the superstructure and bridge, starting on it Monday night.

Tony.

Hello all,
all the best for 2019, I am not sure where 2018 went but I am sure I was in it some where.
.
Have not done much of late, very busy with family and work. I cut the top deck cross members out for easy access to the interior and am in the process of strengthening the removable deck that extends from the funnels to the torpedo tubes. I have also done a bit of work on the engine room skylights situated below the torpedo tubes. I still have to see how much ballast I will need and then work out which motors will suit me best, which will be a learning experience for me. I don't have a workspace and have always just used whatever of my work desk is free, which is interesting sometimes,
Cheers, Will

Hi Will, happy new year 2019, I spent the first two weeks in hospital home on Friday, haven't done much taking it easy, that is some mean keel you have built, how long did that take.

Will get back to Corona Sea tonight finishing off the starboard side vents on the main deck, they are all the way down the ship, not as much s the first two sets .

I pulled out an old loco project going to finish it, doing some repairs first on the shell, she is a DD35/B loco , no cabs, came out in the 70's only lasted 10 years too heavy for the rails like the big boys.

What will you be tackling next.

Tony from very hot down under, no rain in site and no cool change

Thanks Tony,
the hull took over an year to complete, working on and off. There was a lot of trial and error....Good luck with your Loco, it has been too hot in our stables to work on our layout, may have to wait till it cools some more,
.
I am going to use magnets to hold the removable deck in place. Has anyone else done this, is this a common way to do it?. I have found the right sized and strength magnets at my local Hardware shop. This way I wont have to use screws that need to be hidden. Sounds good on paper, will see how I go,
cheers, Will

Hi Will. I have been following your build with great interest. I have the sinking photos of HMAS Waterhen from the man who took them, LCDR McDonald RANR
which I scanned today including one I haven't seen before showing HMS Defender's bow nudging up to Waterhen to start taking the crew off.
Thought you like to see it.

Cheers.

Fantastic, thanks mstary1,
brilliant photos and with names to boot. I have always wondered who the bloke on the bridge was. The photos give great detail up close of both the ship and the crew, with what they are wearing. I intend to put a crew on board my model, and that photo gives great detail for me to use. Do you have any more, and thanks for your interest in my model,
cheers, Will

Hi Will, how is Sunday panning out hot, is hot here peaking 36 degrees and humid, no green grass at all, tried hosing Friday afternoon had the green tinge but not for long.

Couple of great pics of your destroyer, there is heaps out there, I came across a video clip if you are interested, tells you all about your ship length and history.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Vanoc_(H33)

They used them in WW11 as well, probably as destroyer escorts in convoy duty, the ship I saw had WW11 technology in weapons, let me know if you are interested in seeing the video clip goes for 13 minutes I think.

Morr progress on my ship last night finishing the starboard side exhaust vents and adding small doors, waiting in the captain to reply on what there are meant for

Enjoy the rest of the long weekend I am going back on the deck top computer to fly some plans, bought Microsoft Flight Slim.

Tony from warm SE/QLD

Hi Will, apologies for the delay in replying. I work at the current HMAS Waterhen and took down a pic off the wall and scanned it. Poor quality I'm afraid but
it's labelled as Waterhen survivors. One bloke doesn't look happy his picture is being taken but most seem quite happy. Shows a multitude of uniforms.
bell bottoms and seaman's jerseys, stokers boiler suits and tropical rig of khaki shorts etc. I cleaned up the photot as best I could as the original is quite yellow in
appearance and doesn't fit well on a A4 scanner.

Cheers.

This - THIS - is where you really put 'steel on target' by whetting young imaginations.

While I've happily added to the chorus line of compliments on the museum-grade quality of your work, this photo shows the real effect - your firing the imaginations of those boys is well worth whatever hours you've sunk into this project.

Long after you and I are dead, they'll look back at that moment in time by the pool and remember how it added to the courses of their lives - whether they became modelers, engineers, sailors, whatever.

:thumbs_up_1:

Thanks mstary1 for taking the time to scan that photo - I really appreciate it. What a great photograph. A sea of different faces and uniforms. I always wondered what happened to the crew, I guess they were they split up among other ships. I also wonder about the wreck and if anyone has ever even done a side scan sonar - what depth is she at and what condition is she in...Again thanks for taking the time.
.
Funny you should say that Story - I got my inspiration to build from when I lived in Scotland as a young lad of ten. I had always been fascinated by model ships and I remember going to visit an associate of my father and the chap had made a lot of scratchbuilt merchant ships and WW2 destroyers. He filled the bath and let me float them and remembering them now I can see they were quite crudely built but at the time I was amazed at what he had created. That was my inspiration to build this one now. I do hope it rubs off.
.
I am currently working on the funnels, detailing with Mirco mark rivet decals and adding pipes and other bits and pieces, but have to go outside now and try to get the lead rope on my daughters stubborn horse...
cheers, Will
