Been busy making up liferaft racks for either side of bridge, cheated a little as I got Nelson in USA to draw up the sections that hold the life raft cannisters and laser cut a heap of em' for me! Then all I needed to do was build the walkway and some of the bracing.

Here are some pix towards the end of construction and test fitting on superstructure.

No build updates as yet I have not been in the zone for building stuff lately. But here are some cool pics from running her and Saipan back in June in Wagga for Carriers and Escorts weekend.

Got some stuff done today,finally made up the Anchor hawser thingame for the bow anchor....3 bits of scrap 2mm styrene glued together then attacked with dremel, the lots of filing and sanding. Then sorted out some anchor chains....If you notice there are two chains but only one visible anchor. The California class CGNs had an mushroom anchor in the keel same as submarines do! And fitted a little satcom antenna on the ASROC reload house.

During the week I need to paint the life raft canisters for the fwd superstructure then I can fit em'

Also had to replace the fuse holders that come with the FR15 esc's one crapped itself a few months ago and the other gave me trouble at our last run with a dodgy wire...

Had a bit of a

moment and got some work done on the davits for the 26 foot motor boats....

Most of the very simple drawings found on the net show the davits on both sides as being the same length but close analysis of lots of pictures tells me that the davit for the 26' motor boats are shorter than the ones for the 40'ers... Now that I have (mostly....still some bits to do!! ) had a go at one side the other will be much quicker.

Went out in the shed Saturday to try and get one of California's ESCs to work after it refused to work last sail day! Worked fine during early runs in the morning but when I wanted to do a final run before packing up it refused to function just makes a click sound like the relay has porked itself :crs: :crs: Probably cooked the relay running too much current.....Will upgrade both to FR30s then I can finally run her at 100% throttle

After messing about for awhiles doing that I decided to finally fit the Satcom antennas I got from Shapeways ages ago....first had to make up the bracket that attaches to the super structure (plenty of styrene scrap about for making odd shapes up!! plus some evergreen strips and a bit of filing!) Then a coat of primer and a dab of glue...

While the antennas sat to dry I ripped the old plastic railings off from the fwd life raft platforms and replaced them with wire railings (actually HO scale overhead Catenary wire made by Sommerfeldt part no Nr102) and fitted the liferafts to the frames. The platforms will not get permanently attached till some more pipe work gets fitted to the fwd superstructure.

minor update....lol Got some more bits from Shapeways recently RAS padeyes which I fitted on the weekend.

New esc's tested on Sunday at the pond too. Showed good speed (by good speed I really mean "Overspeed".......) And I haven't even reset the TX end points from 85% to 100% full fwd throttle.....

Been working on lighting on the superstructure over 60 tiny LEDs fitted plus Nav lights and mast running lights.

The deck lights are brighter in the photos than in real life!!

In the last picture it looks like you have red and green running lights that are visible from astern.

Unless the rules of the road have changed since I was a ship driver this is wrong. The running lights are not supposed to be visible beyond something like 20 degrees abaft abeam. So you can see them only from the side and ahead, and not from astern.

Nah mate they are not visible from behind at all, the last pic on the bench is looking directly at bridge. From behind nothing is visible at all (which reminds me need to sort out stern lights one day too....)

Gadday Bruce,
I am building a 2.7m V and W destroyer and was hoping you could give me some advice as this is my first build. What did you do for the ballasting of your hull which looks similar in size to mine. How do you place the ballast in the forward part of the hull with the deck permanently in place. I would like to get motors similar to the ones you have, can you tell me exactly what they are? What voltage are they, what sort of batteries do you use and are they also used to ballast your hull? When you put your prop shafts in, do you secure the prop to the motors and use a jig of sorts to hold it in place at the other end whilst using resin to set it.

Sorry for not replying sooner Will I haven't been checking this site much lately!!

Regarding ballasting I use 4x 12v 9Ah Yuasa SLAs (2.5kg each) as drive and ballast directly below the bridge area, 2x 3kg lead wts at the back end of aft superstucture, a 2kg rubber coated dumbbell (from Kmart) under the fwd 5"gun and about 500grams of fishing weights around the rudder posts.

With fitting shafts I use a short drive shaft between the motor and prop shaft that way I can set the shafts up fairly shallowly in the hull. I just chock up the internal end of the shaft and spend most of my effort getting the A frame's and the shaft's lined up correct. Then I use a big glob of auto filler(the type that come with fibreglass strands in it) around the A frame legs inside the hull (making sure it fills everything) then leave to set, coming back a few hours later and doing the shaft tube end.

The motors in her a Graupner 900s which are no longer made (and very expensive if you find them)a better motor I recently found is a 755 sized motor off ebay for around $12AU !!! (3500rpm at 12v) I have fitted them in my DDG53 and they are a good motor with fairly low Amp draw (and they are turning 78mm props!!)

Here ya go, this is how it is setup currently.
The motors are fitted to motor mounts which are mounted on a some 6mm ply (painted) which is then RTV silicon'd to the hull. The fuse board is from Action Electronics...

HI Bruce nice to see you are still building remember me im boatman who built USS NIMTZ on the other old forum about 10 yrs ago an im now building HMS TIGER on here are you still in task force 72 ? an is Scott Oram ?

HI BRUCE I may be getting my wires crossed here but Scott Oram was in TF72 building a small itaillian carrier in 1/72 if I remember rightly an I thought you knew him that's why I asked
