hi, Dan. Regarding the length of it,it was impossible to confirm on her documents that the torp- tubes and reloaders were upgarded to the use of long lancers. I think the layout of the torp. compartment remains the same as when commissoned.This would mean Chokai carried type-90 short-bodied ,normal type of torpedoes from birth til the end.

A very good point. To be honest, I just assumed they would be Type 93 torpedoes. But, upon rereading the entries for her in the L&W book, it seems like she never gained the mods required to carry the Type 93 torpedo.

Based on what I see at the stern, and possibly the bow, I see no trace of a degaussing cable.

No degaussing cable, shaved number 1# turret's rangefinder and no training aiming devices on top of turrets. We where right all along...

It appears that #5 turret may also have had its rangefinder arms clipped.

I'm pretty sure that the catapult base and sponson are from the port side, and that we can see the edge of the aircraft handling deck on the right.

A pure surprise.
The range finder hood of nr.1 gun turret was shortened after the finder was removed for all 4 sisterships, starting from March ,1942.
Wish someone had hawkeyes, then you�d be able to see remains of degaussing cable stoppers---at stern
Truly the portside cat mount here..

It is most probable that they were keeping on training 3 days before the start of unloading flammable materials and training gears to be stored ashore. Until then ships were considered to be fully loaded with those things, incl. gun sigting training gear and it�s container boxes.

I�m not sure if there was range finder on nr.5 gun turret from the commisioning and thereafter.... I rather suppose nr.4 gun turret shares the range information with nr.5.

the hull around turret 5 seems to have collapsed, leaving turret 5's barbette standing by itself.

Super nice find from Petrel according to her TROM on CombinedFleet, she took 4 torpedoes on the port side. One torp hit the forward chain locker. This must've done some serious damage to her bow no wonder why its laying upside down. Its great to see most of it sitting upright tough.

Those 8 minutes are not enough.. dang it. It's fascinating to see her bridge standing and even the main mast still there. I think one of the most impressive things that we get to see now is her new AA structure that replaced the damaged turret, something that was only seen in 2 pictures i believe. I also find fascinating how the main and DP guns are aiming up. Was this caused by the decent of the ship?

Probably not...the ships were steaming into combat, so the guns were probably loaded and ready for action. More than likely loaded with AA shells, hence aimed upward.

You�re absoluely right about it. IJN had alert phases 1 & 2 where AA guns and main guns must be ready to fire at any moment if enemy appears suddenly. We call it "Tossa-shageki"???????For this half of them be ready to fire, the other half at standby position(incl crews taking rest etc)

Was planning to build a Takao in its 1945 configuration using a 1/700 fujimi kit. I got a Kagero reference whoch shows its 1945 configuration and it shows the absence of any rangefinder (or fire director) in its superstructure particularly near the twin 25mm AA gun mount (i have difficulty posting the photo through my Cellphone image too big)

Some photos and the kit instructions include a firedirector or rangefinder in both sides of the superstructure however the reference does not show it.

Question, were range finders and fire directors removed from the Takao in Seletar? Was looking at the TROM and it only mentioned the removal of AA for shore defense but not the rangefinders.

Also for the camou, is it safe to use the type 21 and type 22 color scheme used by the IJN or did the crew used different paints in Seletar in 1945?
