As a break from big warships with a great deal going on, I have started working on Starling Models' cute little Round Table class trawler HMT Sir Gareth.

Eight Round Table class trawlers were built for the Royal Navy between the years 1941 and 1942, all by one of two shipyards in my home town of Aberdeen in the north east of Scotland. They were based on a 1936 trawler called Star of Orkney, and measured 125 feet long whilst they displaced just under 450 tons. They had a relatively large crew for a vessel this size of 35, and the vessels were all commissioned as minesweepers. They carried one 12 pounder anti-aircraft gun, 1 20mm Oerlikon and a pair of .303 machine guns.

His Majesty's Trawler Sir Gareth was launched 19th January 1942 and carried the pennant number T227.

Image

HMT Sir Gareth appears to be wearing a single colour scheme, which in 1942 could either be Admiralty Pattern 507A Home Fleet Grey, or possibly MS2. I don't like MS2 much, and in the bliss of ignorance otherwise, I will use Home Fleet Grey which I find a much more pleasing shade of grey.

The kit is, I believe, CAD designed and used 3D printed masters which have been used for cast resin parts. The kit costs approximately £55 from Starling Models which may appear a lot for such a small model, however the quality is exceptional and the kit is very complete indeed.

Image

In addition, it comes complete with a full colour instruction manual which also identifies all of the parts contained in the box.

Image

It's a full hull model, and the hull complete with numerous very fine deck fittings comes very cleanly cast in a single piece.

Image

Image

I began by opening out some holes along the bulwarks.

Image

Next, a number of small photo etched parts needed to be fitted. The fit is perfect thus far. They literally drop into place.
Image

The following may appear critical, but in this small scale I wanted to ensure I got a good finish. I primed the hull with lacquer based Mr Surfacer 1000. In a single satin coat, there were a few areas which could benefit from a gentle flatting on my casting.

Overall the impression is good

Closer up:

Image

Image

I used a small piece cut from an 800 grit Infini Model sanding sponge wet which proved ideal for this.

Image

In no time at all the high spots were knocked down.

Image

After a quick reprime:

Image

I've added this winch to the foredeck. Duplicates are included of most small parts including this. I did drop it. Hopefully that's now out of the way, but I found it anyway and it dropped precisely into the hole in the hull casting.

Image

I think I'll paint it Home Fleet Grey next, then pick out the planking areas before proceeding with the deck houses which will obliterate my access in there.

Here's the hull with a base coat of NARN20 - 507A/B Home Fleet Grey 13% RF.

Image

We make two versions of 507A; this one at its lightest tolerance and NARN21 at its darker 10% RF. For overall Home Fleet Grey models so far I've been using the lighter one, meaning that I can later wash with a highly thinned NARN21 to lowlight some details. Here's how the 13% RF grey compares to NARN24 Equal Parts 507A/507C Emergency Mix, which happens to be the same shade as our now-discontinued RN02 "507B Medium Grey" which was superseded by new research. It measures 20% RF and is equal in tone to MS3/G20 and Mountbatten Pink.

Nice, looking forward to your updates. I have this kit in my stash.

The waterline inconveniently traverses across a lot of raised detail on the hull. I have used 2mm Tamiya curve tape, and will see what I'm left with shortly. I avoid paint brushes where possible but I'm not sure I'll get away with it here!

That tape is surprisingly good. My straight lines however are not.

Image

I decided that the defunct WEM-era RN12 "MS4" would be a good base colour for deck planking.

I've tried to tidy up my wooden deck area. This has proven easier to think visualise than to execute well!

Image

Also, the rest of the hull has been painted with untinted NARN42 RN Anti-Fouling Red just below the boot topping, then with NARN42 heavily tinted with ACRA01 Giallo Mimetico 1 (a Regia Aeronautica aircraft shade) to make a faded pinky-red.

Very nice. Coming along quickly. Did you ever finish Exeter?

I did not - I need to rig it still and want some figures to paint and fit around the ship - but I'm not sure how broke I'm going to be with the last house rebuild invoice so I'm not buying anything besides essentials such as food for now. I'll get back to finish that one off eventually though :)

As previously mentioned, lots of smaller parts are provided in duplicate. Here's an example:

Once airbrushed the screw was fitted.

These are the main parts of the gun platform at the bow. I'd like to paint this before adding the gun itself for ease of painting both.

Image

When I first started with photo etch in the 1990s all the magazines waxed lyrical about annealing the brass before use. I never bother nowadays...

Ready for some paint :)

I'm not sure if everyone else is managing to essentially fart about whilst we're all at home, but I'm as full-time with the day-job as ever. I got some paint on the little platform just now though, videoed on my phone by my 8 year old daughter:

https://www.facebook.com/sovereignhobbies/videos/2541996789460987/

More traditionally though, for those who think they will melt like the Wicked Witch of the West if they click a link to a video clip hosted on Facebook, I thinned some NARN23 Dark Deck Grey and slapped that about on the unplanked horizontals just to give something to look at.

Thanks for looking in :)

A tiny bit has been squeezed in before I begin today's work, again tortuously close to the modelling bench where I'd rather be sitting!

This resin casting is the lower piece of the forward superstructure and sits below the wheel house. I have opened out the pipes where they loop up and over the top using a 0.8mm drill and the tip of my fresh Swann Morton No.3 10A blade.

Image

I also tried to open out the end of that little exhaust pipe which I guess might come from the galley as it appears to have heat shielding around it where a person may touch?

It's lunchtime. I have added a few bits and pieces to that deck house. The ventilator comes with a hole cast in it, but I've drilled this one out a little more to add to the appearance of it being hollow. It's ready for paint at first opportunity.

Thank you gentlemen,

I'm finding that working from home permits me to retain the enthusiasm that I always have when I finish work at the end of the day through the commute home. Usually that's an hour of frustration stuck on country roads behind dawdlers but this working-from-home malarkey gives me a commute for 2 paces from desk to modelling work bench!

I was thinking about the ship builder which is quite local to me. Like many things, they're not there now despite being quite successful for around a century.

HMT Sir Gareth was built by Hall Russell & Co.

Image

Here's a fairly rare photo I found, and whilst the shed has been demolished I recognised a building in the background...

Image

Here's Aberdeen city on Google Maps, with an arrow pointing to the location.

Image

Zoomed in, you can still see their slip way.

Image

The site is now used as a sea base for the oil & gas industry.

I've masked off the hull again, applied some table salt and given it a highly thinned blow over with NARN21, our 10%RF version of 507A. Once this is dried, I will wash & brush off the salt, then repeat the process again using a light grey to given an impression of some chalking.
