Here is JMSDF Shirane with her SuperStructure test-fitted with mast, platforms, and railings, getting most of the small detail (liferings, .50cals, other colored bits) placed after I paint.

Here is the bridge 'face' work. It has a bit of a tricky PE, just because the instructions don't show a definitive bending of the PE and placement on the kit part itself. Judge for yourself.

These pieces were place on the aft end of the FD, kind-of a funny face  :frown_2:

Had to fill in the mis-matched holes is SupG.

Here is the 'main radar' (I should look it up), but I like to make it look like it is rotating!

Question.....Does Anybody make their models with "moving radar" sets??! :anyone: I've been a radar operator (an OS = Operation Specialists) when I was in the Navy....the only time the radar sets were stationary and centered is when the ship was pulling into port or still on the pier....just curious.

Since most models are static, they're approached from the perspective that they capture a snapshot in time: think of all those waterline dioramas - the waves aren't moving. So having auto-rotating items make little sense from a consistency perspective, though of course you can do it anyway if it strikes your fancy! Having parts that *can* be moved manually is common, as in gun turrets - makes sense to apply it to radars, too.

Personally, I'm having fun managing to get the main rotor on a 1/700 helicopter to turn when I blow on it due to the way the manufacturer designed it.

'Timmy C' I would LOVE to see the rotors of helos (in a simulated) turning/rotating!! :nod_1: , I understand that they have PE for propellers looking like they are rotating for a whole set of WWII A/C. I have quite a few ships that would look great with that simulated look!!

Final test-fit before paint job, then decals, but I do want to show both of these ships together before saying farewell to this thread (Big thread). Even though the subject title was saying "Early JMSDF DDH..." I did do Haruna in post-80's refit after her FRAM II update, Shirane, was put together as built. Also Shirane does not have a hull for this kit either, but I think that PitRoad did do a re-issue of both of these kits With a hull.....and believe me I was thinking of purchasing those two (2) kits again...just for the hull!! :eyes_spinning: :Mad_6:

I also do plan on having mounting bolts so that I could display both ships on a single wooden plank, besides the plastic stand to display inside curio showcase.

'TimmyC' that Is INCREDIBLE..... :thumbs_up_1: :cool_1: I can only imagine that those rotors revolve by a small magnet?? (they seem a little herky-jerky in rotation) Or is there a small motor under the deck of the ship, maybe within the base??

But, that is really cool :cool_2:

Here is JMSDF Shirane painted out with some of the black exhaust painted out as well ( unfortunately...my "windbird" must have fallen off, will replace soon ).

I did do some of the red fittings, small hoses around the SS, weapons "holes" (on guns and ASROC) will start fitting other small details like binoculars above and on Nav bridge. Will be painting the 'white stuff later'

Then decals will be next, then FINISHED!! :woo_hoo:

Stay tuned!! :thumbs_up_1:

Shirane with her paint job and all her smaller details, including her fire monitors!!

I also placed some fire hoses around the ship as best as I can figure with pix of the real ship and painted the applicators for them. But the life rings are in correct positions, again as per photos of real ship.

The only thing left is to GlossCoat before the decals then drill out the hole on the bottom of the plate for the waterline so as to mount on wooden deck.

As for the JMSDF Haruna, I will mount her on a brass tube pedestal as a 'lamp fixture' ( as small as they can be ) would be too much and possibly take away from looking at the ship. Both ships will be placed on the same wooden base......thinking though of buying some blue felt to place underneath JMSDF Shirane, but what do you think??

Anyways, here is a photo-dump of the painted Shirane....

Well....its been a long time coming, but Shirane is just about finished. :woo_hoo:

Want to share a few photos before posting the others on the Gallery.....will be posting another YT video of both Haruna & Shirane together...I would like to give a BIG Shout Out to 'spejic', 'maxium' who both got me started in the right direction with pix of the real ship from (now, I know) a Japanese site of JMSDF ships, and the lower hulls especially 'spejic'!! (W/O 'spejic' both of these ships would have been waterlined and not that much fun for me) :cool_1:

Also for 'Timmy C' giving me some hints on what I could do for taller ( LHA-type ) ships with helos.

I still want to use the rigging thread for sig-flags and radio antennae....did try some to 'secure the rotors of the helo' to be shown in the Gallery??

And....Yes....I did run out of netting for the back-end of the FD. Might try to borrow some from the next build.......Any Guesses??

Very nice detailing, What rigging thread are you going to use and what mfg paint did you use?

'Maxium', Thank You for your help in providing references....I have mentioned you quite a bit ( and 'spejic' ) for ALL the help you both have given me :thumbs_up_1:

'shipclambake'...I have a few different rigging threads that I will be testing shortly, because I do want to do rigging on my ships. But for this ship I used MIG rigging in 0.01mm size (Super Fine) to rig the helo on Shirane's FD.

But "clambake", I do have products from MIG, Modelkasten, and this 1st product that I purchased a spool at a fishing shop, Veevus at 8/0 and 16/0 diameters. Not sure what each one will do but will be doing a test in rigging sig-lines for each one, how they handle, strechyness, how they overall look like on a ship, etc. I will probably post the results here and on YT as I do when I finish my models.

So here are the last of the photos of JS Haruna & Shirane, again I put these ships together because of their similarities, but as you can see there are differences between each other.....it like looking at the FORRESTAL-class ships....even looking at the funnel caps of those ships differ a bit, not to mention their electronic equip. locations.

Also, my first attempt EVER  of using rigging on Any ship....so I tried it on "tying down" helos on the FD, I even put a bit of a bend on the rotor blades ( Maybe a little Too Much ), for the times I remembered helos getting ready to take off on moments notice...(I do have PE sailors & FD personnel...maybe I'll place those also   )

I have to admit...putting riggin' "Is Toouuugh" ( just like shrimpin' ) :eyes_spinning: :mad_1: ....so if you are doing this BE PATIENT! I used MIG rigging 0.01mm (Super Fine), but as mentioned above I also have a couple of others. Tools used is SupG, small tweezers, toothpicks, and fly-fishing scissors ( to cut at a Close range :censored_2: :mad_2: :dead: ). Again, Be Patient!!

and yes....that is my coffee cup, of one of my ships.

I did weather the FD with the same method as Haruna...using pastel chalks, dish washing soap, water. I feel good progress is being made using this technique, although I do have the AK Interactive sets for ships ( Maybe I'll use it on the next build {[does anybody know what that will be??]} . But I'm still using it for the hulls and testing my technique before I feel the 'confidence' in using AK.......I'll still work on it.

I did mount both ships together on a base board of Red Stain on oak wood, but when place inside curio, they have their own separate stands, for hull and for waterline. If I want to show off, they get "placed on the base!" :cool_1: :thumbs_up_1: . Also I having made plaques for these ships, that is why you see those cut-outs on the board side ( Unfortunately it has been Awhile since I used my router as you can see :doh_1: :cry_3: ).

So, even though this might be my last post, hopefully it won't be my last reply, hope to hear from "Peps" :wave_1:

Wow thanks for all the details, I want to try my hand at some simple rigging that's why I ask. The 1/700 helos are awesome, I have a thing for 1/700 aircraft and the close ups that you provided make me want to work on some of my helicopters.
