I just purchased " The Heavy Cruiser Takao " by Janusz Skulski and would like to build a 1/96 or 1/100 scale model of her . Does anyone know were I can find a set of plans for it . The book has everything but to reprouduce it all from the book would be costly. There must be some somewere because they are in the book . Plans in any scale would work as I can have them enlarged .

Why not write to the publisher's, they might be able to tell you where larger plans can be obtained.

This would be an interesting model in the scale you propose. Will it be for Radio Control, or just a static model?

1:96. I love it; it's so English (in the American sense).

I doubt any continental European would choose such a scale.

1:48 was the official scale of the Bureau of Construction.

Digital Navy has a nice card model on CD of it. Im pretty sure Roman used the book you reference to create his model. Buy that and scale it up

Glad to be of assistance.

A little background - I have been dealing with Haruo Takami for a number of years and he has never failed me. I now have quite an extensive library of his plans. His prices have not changed in all that time. His English is not the best but his scruples are. His sources are impeccable, he is associated with all the Universities and has access to all the authoritative Japanese IJN Naval Historians.

He works as a draftsman for a famous Electrical Company and produces these plans as a hobby They are xeroxed and so will fade after a period of time - so be aware! With your first order, he includes a free data sheet of guns, ships boats, Dc's etc. It will take a couple of weeks to get a reply, or your order, but be assured it WILL arrive.

I have found the cheapest and best way for me to remit money is in the form of a Japanese Yen bill, bought without taxes or charges at the local International airport, folded between two sheets of paper - or better still, send it between a couple of postcards in an envelope. He just LOVES European historical architecture. You might have noticed!

As far as any other web addresses for IJN material,- where do I start? I suppose it depends on what, in particular, you are after. I became interested in the IJN as a result of being informed that there is very little available, all records were destroyed at the end of the war to prevent the information falling into American hands. How wrong that assumption was! True, the bulk of material was destroyed as ordered, but it is amazing what has, and is still coming to light, and what has yet to be publicised will knock the arm-chair admirals socks off.

I will compose a list of IJN related sites that I use in a seperate post.

Sorry for the waffle - The IJN, ( ship construction that is ) is something that pushes my buttons.

Very glad to see another modeller interested in the IJN

Please be aware that there are some inaccuracies in Skulski's books, especially the Yamato. These have been corrected in the re-print. If you decide to go ahead and build the Takao in detail, we can talk some more. I will probably have a number of bits and bobs that you could use, things that are generic for the HC class of ships. Anchors, bitts, vents etc.

The "Bible" of IJN cruisers is Lacroix and Wells 'Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War' 1997 ISBN 0-87021-311-3. A must have.

Also there are several Japanese publications obtainable through Hobbylink Japan but the only other one I refer to is 'Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy' ( Heavy Cruisers ) ISBN 4-7698-0782-1

With these two books you can build any IJN HC and thumb your nose at any critic regarding accuracy. If you are not able to find a second hand copy anywhere, you are welcome to borrow my working copies.

The Miyukikai Plans also include the sister ships if you would like a comparison of changes throughout the war.

Gakken Vol. # #16 on the Takao class, featuring 2 superb 1/100 builds of Takao & Maya

Futabash 3DCG volume on Takao class - very well done.

I was'nt sure if I wanted to tackle such a big project as the Takao but with all of your help {everone } I should be able to do it [WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY ] Ihave'nt built a scratch-built model in almost twenty years and am looking forward to getting back into it . I was going to do the Oregon BB-3 in 1/48 BUT Looks like things have changed .What about the card model idea ! Would it help me ? Thanks again . I also Did'nt belive the prices . Thanks for clearing it up !

Not sure where you're located but I suggest you first try Hobbylink Japan. They may be out of stock/print, which means looking at Amazon or Ebay or a used bookstore online.

In the US, Pacific Front Hobbies tends to carry these titles as well.

Hi Art,

Thank you for your information, regarding the Miyukikai IJN Plans. I think we should make you the IJN Representative for the Modelwarships Forum. You certainly have studied the IJN to the letter.

I have as you know, several models on the go at the moment, which should be completed by the end of the year/early 2007.

I think I will definately have a go at a Japanese Cruiser or Destroyer as a change of subject matter. I have always been fascinated by larger Battleships and Aircraft Carriers, but another large model such as these, is out of the question, due to lack of space for storage and transporting to the lake.

A Cruiser or one of the large destroyer's would be about the right size in 1/96 scale or even 1/72 for a destroyer.

I need to gather a bit of information together whilst doing my present builds, so that I have something to plan for.
