HELP... looking for a ship!

Post by kennylibben »

okay gents,

i need a ship for the 3 inch club! i thought about Virginia cuz the scale would be perfect to match the monitor of the 2 inch club (which was attacked by the parental unit and broke off a mast! ARGH!)...but i cant find any decent plans.

so i need a good simple ship. i have very limited resources, mainly just balsa sheeting. thats why i chose the monitor... so i need your help finding something extremely plain and easy..... and good plans online that i can shrink to 3 inches!

Exactly what kind of ship? Sailing? Commercial? Warship?

What Scale? Little ship in a big scale, or a big ship in a little scale? For either you could use a card model as a template. I scaled down Digital navy's Admirable to 1/700 for plans. I think that that might be three inches. Balsa would be perfect for this. Here's a few links for you:

http://www.digitalnavy.com/html/downloads.html
Or for something pre WW I
http://www.papershipwright.freeserve.co.uk/

I don't have time to collect all the links right now, but there are many others. I;ll try and get those for you tomorrow.

As for plans, on-line sets are few and far between, especially for small ships. The few I do know about are all for large ships (USS Missouri, Conte, etc..) I have met sucess with using the paper models. You could always buy some, if none of the above satisfy you. But then you mght as well just buy some plans.

Hope this helps

i dont really care what kind of ship.... although preferably some sort of WARSHIP. i know its hard to find plans but i really only need a diagram, showing the side, top and front so i know the height and width mainly. i want as few details as possible. i'd like to just do a easy kit, i know tamiya makes some that are about 3 inches but i really dont have the money to be buying them with college coming up.

I know a place to check. Only discovered it this weekend. Has tons of lines drawings, but is very easy to navigate. It will only work with Internet Explorer (I have an iBook). I'm using it to build a monitor.

An interesting site avery, but i cant find the line drawings? i click on a country, then a classification... but when it lists the ships i cant do anything?

i did find this pic on there tho...quite interesting...i think its even more extreme than that pic of the liberty ship camo someone posted a few years ago.

That's why you have to use internet explorer. I think it has something to do with the format, I don't know. What kind of Computer do you use? As I stated above , mines a mac (An iBook G4)

As for the camo, the Nebraska was one of the many ships, both RN and USN to carry that drastic "Dazzle" pattern. I've always wanted to try it out on a ship. I've never gotten around to laying paws on a USN Predreadnought, but if I do, I'll give it a shot. It would be a nightmare to try and paint onto the superstructure though.

yeah, i know about razzle dazzle and i've seen alot... i just thought this was one of the most complex and awkward ones.

as for computers i have a dell desktop and use internet explorers. i found that i can find drawings by searching for a ship but have trouble finding a ship. it couldn't even find the most basic american ships... and i saw some of them listed on the USA page.

It's a work in progress, so I'm not sure if all of the US ships are up yet. The site specializes in obscure ships like the said monitor. Here are the navsource links:

That's it for tonight. i'll try and get you some more links tomorrow. I'm afraid that none of the above have frontal views but photos should work.

edit: here are a few more links from the site. (If your tired of me bugging you with links, then I'll cease and desist  )
