The Asheville-class gunboats were a class of small warships built for the United States Navy in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. 16 ships of this class were built between 1966 and 1971, the first USN gas turbine powered ships as well as the first with aluminum hulls and fiberglass superstructures. Originally designed for Caribbean patrols, the Asheville class were deployed into Southeast Asia for both coastal and riverine duties as well as to the Mediterranean.

Built by Peterson Builders (Sturgeon Bay, WI) and Tacoma Boatbuilding Company (Tacoma, WA), virtually all ships of this class were struck from the Navy Register and scrapped by the late 1980s, with remaining vessels scheduled for museum loan or transfer to the Greek, Turkish, Colombian and South Korean navies. The exceptions were USS Chehalis and USS Grand Rapids, which were operated by the Naval Surface Warfare Center into the mid-1990s (but since scrapped). Both ships featured in this boxing also served in the Great Lakes supporting naval reserve and Environmental Protection Agency missions; the Antelope was ultimately transferred to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy as a training vessel.

Revell released this ship in 1:130 scale model in 1971. TLAR Models and PT Dockyard offer lower cost (and far less detailed) versions of the class in 1:700, but Dodo Models now claims the best-ever release in 1:700 scale.

The kit is handsomely and carefully boxed by Dodo. The waterline hulls come taped in bubble wrap. Resin accessory pieces are boxed separately in a small jewel case (and taped down to prevent movement even within). PE, brass gun barrels and decals are packed in plastic zipper bags. A generous six pages of instructions provide detailed diagrams for resin and PE parts placement and painting.

The kit includes two waterline hulls and full PE for both ships. The superstructure is cast in place, as are some deck details, but many fine superstructure details are cast separately in resin or PE, which should ease painting details a bit. Decals include all USN hull numbers and names for the class, as well as US flags. Each of these vessels is armed differently; while both carry a 3-inch/76mm front turret, the Asheville is fitted with a stern 40mm Bofors and the Antelope with box launchers for RGM-66D Standard surface-to-surface missiles.

Builds should be straightforward. This is a neat and trim kit, fully detailed, cleanly cast and would make a nice complement to the larger USN capital ships in your collection.

DodoModels can be found online at http://www.dodo-models.com/index.html or on Facebook. Orders are processed through eBay.

Two other manufacturers sold USS Asheville kits in 1/700: PT Dockyard and TLAR. Neither comes close to the Dodo models kits. A very nice kit indeed.
