Thank you Simon

, Richard

, Phil

. Phil you are quite right in what you say. I have always subscribed to the concept that building a model ship is like stringing together a series of smaller models. This for me makes the process of building less tedious especially in the mid phase of construction when there remains so much to do. Here of course the situation is slightly skewed as I haven't even started the model
Thank you all for looking in , it's appreciated.

Hi Roel , now you have posed a problem!!! I would like to use this on the model but Im still rather undecided as to which ship to build. Whether it is Steregushchiy or Soobraziltelny, basically the same with some minor differences but the latter is all VLS. Question what would be your choice, I value your thoughts?

Nice, now you make your problem my problem!
Well to be honest I like the Soobraztelniy more. The Kashtan sort of "breaks" the line on Stereguchiy, it looks rather oversized and not well "integrated" in the looks of the ship.
Another point that always sort of comes into play is that the Stereguchiy is a much weaker ship. It's good for patrolling and anti-piracy, but as a real combattant I doubt her capabilities. Soobraztelniy on the other hand has kept the Uran, reduced the self-defence a bit (although less than I initially thought since I always supposed she had the missiles on the Kashtan as well), but gained a lot of power and flexibility with that Klub VLS.
And as mentioned above, Soobraztelniy just looks much better.
The only thing that would make me decide in favor of Stereguchiy is that it would be a shame not to use that marvellous Kashtan anywhere...

Roel thanks for your thoughts. Yes there are advantages and disadvantages. Having seen pictures of the Soobraztelniy the unbroken line from the bow to the bridge, apart from the 100mm gun is much more pleasing to the eye. But one remark passed on Sunday by Richard Motyaka "the Steregushchiy looks more pugnacious which seemed to be a trait of Soviet navy ships. We shall see

.
thanks again

Some last remaining pictures that perhaps convey somewhat better the size of the model

A comparison of size at 1:72nd
Placed in position on the plan of Steregushchiy over the VLS position forward of the bridge .

To be honest Dave it would be a crime not to use such a wonderful piece of work on the build.

Bill its really good to hear from you my friend. Thanks for your comments they are indeed appreciated. I must admit building the Kashtan was a bit like putting the cart before the horse but I have enjoyed the build even though it was rather brief. I have to have the Daring project completed and ready to be handed over by February, and then I can give all of my concentration over to this new project. . By the way how is your own build program working out? I have to confess I would love to have a crack at another carrier or LPH as a future build .I have been doing some spade work along that path as I find it takes as long to assemble all the necessary pieces of information as it does to actually build the model. All the very best to you Bill

Hi Dave!
This is really an outstanding piece of art! Amazing what you can create just from rod and 2-D-Styrene!!
Thank you very much for sharing - even more for doing so in your very instructive step-by-step-manner!
Admiring regards from Dortmund!

Hi Joachim you are very welcome and good to hear from you . I missed meeting up with you at the Intermodelbau back in April . I've been taking a close look at the drawings of the forward 100mm gun turret which is slightly different but like the Kashtan would be interesting to model

Russ really good to hear you . No the Daring is almost completed just sorting out the last few parts , like building the Merlin 101 helicopter , deck lining and some painting .Thankfully the Daring build has been good training for this new project which has plenty of stealth features ,although the kashtan is not one of them but this 100mm housing is !
Looking forward to this one

Robert
Hi Robert although the two gun mountings can move up and down and the gun will rotate, there is no mechanism to do this as a working feature, but it would be interesting especially on the Kirov.
Dave Wooley

Hi Dave,
As is always the case, an absolutely superb class in modelling techniques and process. Thank you so much for sharing.

I am not as sure about your challenges though - see quote

Seems I will have to make my Kashtans at least rotate on the Edwin........
Thanks again, this will be an enormous help to me, just like the CIWS and directors on Varyag.
