Great progress pictures drd.

After seven plus hours of looking at pictures, cutting the tape and placing the big and small pieces on the model, the North Carolina is now ready for some Ocean Gray paint.
That should happen tomorrow night.
I'm looking forward to getting back to the USS Independence and her Navy Blue paint scheme.

Hey Rob, please keep the width of the boot-topping in mind, most overlooked by KM modellers. On a scale-350 model it should be around 6 or 7mm in width (depending on how far down it reached, there are different surces and different point of views, at least for Bismarck/Tirpitz, and I guess Scharnhorst/Gneisenau were not much different).

On my Scharnies, I've opted for 6mm:


(sorry for the bad shot, the WIP model is mothballed with others inside a showcase)

I hand-painted a broad dark grey (NOT black) band around the hull, took 6mm Tamiya tape and applied it on that band (with its upper edge along the upper edge of the underbelly), then painted the hull above and below the masking tape (well, I applied the rust before painting the final coat, which then was lightly sanded to make the rust come through).

And please, please make sure you get the various deck colours right, PM me if in doubt... (and if not)

The Ocean Gray has been apploied to the North Carolina and the touch ups have been completed. I'll let the paint cure for a couple of days and then start the masking for the Flat Black paint.

drd, Your progress pictures look great.

Last week I started mounting the shields to the 20mm pedistals but that was more work (pia) than I wanted to do at the time so I only got a couple done before I called it quits for the night. I worked on painting the ammo lockers, I painted and put the quad 40mm guns together and painted some of the ships's rafts.

This morning I masked off a couple of Light Gray areas that needed to be touched up and completed that task. I then started to mask the 16" Turrets for their coat of flat black paint and noticed that I missed painting Ocean Gray on half of the turrets. I touched up (painted) those areas that I missed. I started to mask off the ship so that I could apply the flat black paint and decided to paint the boot topping first and started masking the hull and I finally finished that project.

Here is how things look today.
Now onto masking for the black paint.

I have now applied the flat black paint to the North Carolina, it took 7 1/2 + hours to mask it off and a 1/2 hour to paint. Yes, I'm glad that is finished. Now it's on to the Deck Blue 20B, I'm using the last bottle of Polly S paint I have for the deck.

Theres still a gentlemen selling Weth Deck Blue from polly on ebay, with decent pricing

I now have all the major painting and almost all of the touch-ups done. It's on to the railings, small parts and all of those 20mm guns.

Nice work Gordon! The camo looks great! Much neater than mine. I am envious!

A couple members really liked the way I painted the decks and asked for an explanation, I was shocked because compared to them I'm inexperienced!

Thanks for your comment on the camo. I cut a lot of corners on appling the camo and I seems like I have to touch something else up everytime I go to do something to the ship. What a pain it has become.

This week's update pictures look like last week's pictures with the exception of the props and rudders applied. All of the small parts have been glued down with the exception of the parts that would get in the way of the installing of the railings. Railings, rigging and a flat coat are about all that is left to do.
My North Carolina is gettting close to being finished and I'm looking forward to that.

Seen this thread and had to get on this. I'm building all Tonkin Gulf Yaht Club 1/350's at this time. But the build here is a Tamiya 1/350 WWII New Jersey with a round bridge. I have all I need to get started as you see by the photos below. White Ensign Models 1/350 WWII Missouri p.e set,Alliance Modelworks 1/350 WWII 5 inch38 mounts with blast bags and also 1/350 Oerlikon 20mm guns. Aber 1/350 16inch barrels. Classic Warships conversion kit.

The North Carolina is now just two steps away from being finished after having a flat coat applied today. I need to add a flag and anchor chains, which I need to order, since I don't have any large enough for this BB.
This kit has gone from the "Shelf of Doom" (for nearly six years) to near completion in just a matter of three months. If it wasn't for this BB Group Build, it would still be on the SoD.



Here's the final picture of the now finished North Carolina with her anchor chains and flag added.

Is the group build still running? If yes, I would join with the Samek's 1/350 Monitor or Virginia, not decided yet...

Hey, this boot topping bit.. The fat boot topping was only applicable to the ship on the trials, so 1940s. After that it weas thinned down in half I believe and, say during the Denmark straight or in Norway before that it was thinner. At least thats what I gathered following the well known bismarck drawings webpage. Am I wrong? Are you building the full gray early version?
