Mark - I would like to talk to you about decals for CVW-19 and share some building info - I was ships company on the Ticonderoga from 1966-1969 which put me on the 4th Vietnam Cruise, Dec. 28, 1967 Aug. 17, 1968 with Carrier Air Wing 19 (CVW-19), "NM". Could you please contact me at jgbeas@comcast.netMark McKinnis wrote:What a great thing to wake up to this morning!! An email from Freetime notifying me that Intrepid is real and on the way.![]()
Pre-Order Complete!
All production lines at my shipyards have stopped to crank up the aircraft factories to produce an airwing for her!
She will be Hancock CVA-19 with CVW-21 (1965-1966) or Ticonderoga CVW-19 (1966-1967) I have done decals for both airwings so I need to pick. Finally, something gets released in Plastic before I build from scratch or do a resin kit!
I can't wait.

So, has anyone heard of an actual release date yet? We're past the 'late April' timeframe now and I hadn't heard anything further other than a rumor that it was delayed until August - any truth to that? I've wanted this kit since I was a little kid with my fleet of Revell carriers and all those tiny planes.

Just spoke with the guys at Free Time Hobbies and they said they have recently been told the release date will still be late May or early June - now we just need all those fine after market parts and pieces to start showing up to go with the kit - especially TICONDEROGA parts and pieces.

Thanks for the link Thomas. Interestingly they say it is a Hobby Boss kit.
I suppose the kit came via them.

You're welcome. But the thanks needs to go to the folks at Cybermodeler.com for posting the pics on their site. I just shared them... I to noticed it said HobbyBoss... My understanding the kit is a shared effort by Trumpeter & Gallery/MRC... But, I'm sure those on here who are connected to the manufacturers in some way would know more....
Also, sorry for the miss spelling... It's Sprues, not Spruces... Dang auto correct... LOL!!

Hobby Boss and Trumpeter are both part of the same overarching company that includes lower quality brands like Mini Hobby Models. It's why you see a lot of Trumpeter 1/350 kits being available from Hobby Boss in 1/700 (e.g. the Burkes, and contracted kits like the Gallery LHDs and LPDs) with very similar level of detailing.

Re: Official Release!! Gallery 1/350 USS Intrepid CV-11!!
Back on Page 2 of this thread, I had posted pics of an Intrepid kit that a modeler by the name of Mark Karolus was working on. Well, I met Mr. Karolus again at the Manitowoc Martime Museum......
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=156362
.......and we discussed more about the work he was doing on his Intrepid. He said it's pretty much done, but he has been having bad problems with building the aircraft. He also showed me pics of the instruction sheets for this kit. He informed me that he would try to send me further pics of his progress via email soon, and if it's ok with him, then maybe I can post pics here again of the further work he has done. When I get more information, then I will let everybody know and make another post here.

Re: Official Release!! Gallery 1/350 USS Intrepid CV-11!!
Been emailing back and forth today with Mark. He's sending me more pics. He asked that I remind everyone that a lot of what you see is prototype test shots. His words to me in an email were the following:
I know a lot of modelers here are on pins and needles (or X-acto blades and razor blades) waiting to see more pics/progress. But if you can remain patient, I will post more pics before the end of this week. I'll try to get some tonight......if possible.....just remember to note these are prototype test shots and have had some errors but I did get really good news today that the fixes are in and a pre-production shot is now enroute to me for final analysis pending release! Ill be having a busy week ahead, proof-reading the instruction sheets final draft, decal sheets, PE and checking the fixes exciting to be wrapping up this project but it has been most interesting.

he may not have reached that point yet, but could you ask if the catwalk raft / floater net baskets are going to be included?

Some aircraft in the kit may be tail heavy. So modelers may need to get creative when planning to put them on the deck. Some aircraft that Mark had were very brittle and broke apart too easily when gluing or even trying to paint. Hopefully, this has been fixed by the manufacturer and Mark has let them know on how to correct this issue.

Sure, I can ask him. I also sent him a link to this entire thread, so hopefully he'll get a chance sometime to read everyone's comments. But if anybody has any questions on anything, then please let me know and I can email Mark. If there's a certain picture of something you want to see, then let me know and I'll see if he can provide it.Tracy White wrote:he may not have reached that point yet, but could you ask if the catwalk raft / floater net baskets are going to be included?

They're noticeable on photos on her Navsource page. Below is a photo of the same baskets on Ticonderoga.EJM wrote:Sure, I can ask him.

The bulb at the bow is interesting. Is it really that shape and if so why? It looks like it has a sonar but I doubt if these ships were fitted with bow sonar?
Shame about the aircraft. Otherwise the kit looks pretty good (I have no knowledge of these ships though).

It is SQS-23 sonar fitted on the CVS to help them with their ASW mission. Here's a photo of Intrepid during her museum maintenance drydocking that shows it: http://www.oobject.com/ships-out-of-wat ... ment/2805/
