Excellent work on the bulkheads sir! Touches like those make details pop. On the actual picture i wonder what happened to the missing piece of flight deck. Most likely slid into the sea but such big chunk of flight deck should still be visible on the shot and i don see it.

Loving it. I blew up my screen and shifted my monitor color to B&W for the fun of it just to see a contextual comparison between your work so far and the actual. It was scary how close they are.

Yes, it was taken at high tide, as the dirty marks of higher water level are also not visible. In this video, those marks are clearly visible, and much more of that elevator opening shows (check after 1:00):

The battle damage will be a nice challenge indeed, but nothing that can't be done with some thin copper and brass sheet, copper and brass wire, and some PE leftovers. I'm actually looking forward to that!

I think it was blown overboard, instead of collapsing down into the hangar. In this photo, a piece is still hanging from the port aft corner of the hole in the flight deck, upside down with its' support beam structure upwards (ignore the circles and numbers):

In this shot, the same piece is also barely visible:

This photo shows the hangar floor quite well before the ship capsized, and no really large pieces of (flight deck) debris are visible on it.
This photo is also quite interesting for me, because you can see the aft elevator is at the upper hangar level, while the front one is down to the lower hangar level.

Thanks Jari for that video. There are many instant diorama's in there!

The PE bulkheads are from the custom set Bruno designed. If I'm correct, he was inspired by the Rainbow set for those bulkhead details indeed, as well as for the elevator well details (but then by other Rainbow sets of course). The bulkheads were quite a bit too short, but that was not a problem as it was easy to simply cobble two together.

I haven't done much lately, but a just a small update:

I added part of the front and aft deck edge detail at the elevator wells. I had previously carved and sanded down the deck from below to leave a thinner edge at the front and rear sides than at the port and starboard sides. Simple strips of plastic sheet now give the illusion of a beam that is slightly set back to that edge.

Plastic strips glued to the underside of the deck, and sanded down to be level:

Since I will get started on detailing the outside of the ship, I mounted it on a handle (=wooden block). Normally I would simply glue nuts over corresponding holes to the inside of the hull, but as this one doesn't have a hull bottom anymore, I set the nuts into Magic Sculp while soft:

I totally agree! I'm not trying to build real ships, but to make an image of it with bits of plastic and paint. So it is indeed effect and perception which count in the end. Whether a detail is there in relief, or only painted to look in relief is irrelevant to me, whatever looks best (and looking in-scale is important for that, at least for me) wins.

Anyway, if I would construct this kind of detail, I would still have to paint it afterwards, which would always make it look heavier than doing it with paint only. For the same reason, I like painting hull plating in 1/700 instead doing it in actual relief.

I also used to do this a lot with figures, for adding clothing details like seams, button holes, insignia etc.

I takes a bit of confidence with a paintbrush (but anyway so does bringing out fine detail when painting), but as a nice side-effect, this approach also saves time.

Hours at the bench have been limited and progress is slow, but at least there is some progress:
I finished the supporting structure of the overhanging part of the flight deck, a nice challenge and point of interest of most IJN carriers.

The beautiful PE set by Bruno Gire includes this part, but unfortunately it seems to be based on the beam pattern of the kit, which is a bit different from what I can see on the photo's of Amagi, and which has the beams end a bit far from the edges of the deck because of the chamfered edges. Normally this would be more than good enough, but since the position of the ship shows these details much better than normal, I decided to go the extra length.
I did use some of Bruno's parts, cut and cobbled together, together with generic PE perforated beams, plastic sheet, brass sheet and stretched sprue, to arrive at the end result.

The kit detail, which is not bad at all and would probably do for a waterline model in normal position:


Of course, this detail had to be removed, and the flight deck thinned as much as possible:
