New tool version defo is a great kit, though it has some flaws. Mind though, the Skulski book contains errors as well!

Thank you Larry! I do recommend the new tool. Having owned both it's no comparison. Keep in mind there is much conflicting information on Yamato even between aftermarket sets. There are 4 views on the AA shields on the 25 mms open mounts alone. Make a judgement call and don't get too caught up in getting every detail correct. Even Skulski and Tamiya differ on the number of open 25mms mounts (26 vs 28). I went with 28.

I have ordered the 'new tool' version.

I've got tired of continuous bad fitting, mistakes in this old kit. Considering the number of aftermarket parts I have bought it was also a shame...

I have also ordered Skulski's book so we will see what will come out of it...

Anyway, good luck with Your build!

Jose, when You will have: 3 Kids, Wife and house than You will see! ;)

I just finished 28 open triple mounts. The guns are from Pontos and consist of 18 parts each for a grand total of 504 parts! They took longer than expected, but I am happy with the results:

What is the consensus on the Pontos set VS the Lion Roar?

I have definitely used both. The wind deflectors were Lion Roar. The enclosed AA have parts from both. The replacement vent grates are LR. Pontos barrels have won out. LR has more parts on the gun directors. Pontos did the excellent upper director mount. If I had to choose only one of would be Pontos full set, but I have really needed both.

Here are the open 12.7 cm AA guns. They were packaged with the Pontos set but I believe they were done in cooperation with Veterans Models:

Thanks Martin! Yes there is a lot of AA guns. I love the 45 version because to me it looks like they finally finished Yamato and made it look like it should.

nice work on the plethora of AA guns. Looking at this really makes my hands itchy to continue mine, but that won't happen any time soon :D

Looking forward to see some more next year, keep it up Joe.

Cheers

The 3 main and two secondary turrets are mostly complete. Just some minor touch-ups and flat coating. The barrels and blast bags are from Pontos, the railings are Lion Roar and Artwox, the insulation plating and maintenance railing on the secondary turrets are Lion Roar, the tripods on the secondary turrets are Pontos, the AA guns and platforms are Pontos, the ammo lockers are Lion Roar, the aft platform and ladders on the secondary turrets are Tamiya, and the aft doors and details on all turret rears are Lion Roar. These took 2 months and about 100 hours to complete.
