Gearing FRAM modelers:

Here is a link to March 2008 photos of preparations to move the real USS Orleck from Orange Tx, to North Little Rock Ark.

http://www.ussorleck.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=302

They have landed the Propellers and shafts to reduce draft. The photos show the Gearing FRAM 4-blade propeller shape (different than WWII 4-bladers), with workers in the photos for scale reference.

Jimmy, I didn't understand your last question. I am going to double pack the model really well, a box inside a box, and it will be in an IMEX plexiglass case mounted to a wooden base board with a brass name plate.

I used Liquitex heavy gel to fill the gap between the water and the hull, and then experimented with building up some wake waves with the gel, as well. I think that I painted too, many perpendicular waves, however.

Thank you all for your help! I forgot to log in the last time.

The information you found out was very helpful. I found some action reports of BHR of that period. There is mentioned that DD752 Alfred A. Cunnigham unreped with CVA31. Cunnigham is one of the Sumners with the 3in AA fitted at that time. This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you all agian :thumbs_up_1:. I will keep you informed when I make progress.

Hi Mr Wizard!!

Im sorry for delay in responding to this message. I visited the link that you posted, I really apreciated the pictures of propellers that operators placed on the pier. It is encouraging news of the recovery of the ship, which pleased me very well.
Nice regards: Jimmy

Jimmy:

They are really trying. The water level in the river is critical for the ship to get up river. They will have to (temporarily) remove the formast, aft mast, and the top part of the forward uptake. They have plenty of help now, but it has been costly. They apparently need more funds to finish the move.

I'm relatively new to this forum but thought I would share. This is my first attempt at scratch building. I made a 1/192 scale USS Zellars DD-777 circa 1960. My brother Ralph (E3) served onboard from 1961-1963. I used the BOGP plans of the Allan Sumner DD-692 and the Laffey 724 as a guide. I completed it in September of 2007.

Nice build on the Zellars in a perfect desktop scale for a DD, 1/192! I went to your site and checked out your step by step build. All the details are nicely rendered and aligned very good. Truely impressive. Did you ever think of buildling one in this scale for RC? Would have to be sealed like a sub, but what a unique project if you could pull it off.

I checked out the Enterprise on your site, too. Very nice work, everything square and well fitting. I hope to build a Baltimore Clipper some day, Likely the Model Expo kit of POB2. There is a nice German kit of Harvey that is tempting.

Thanks Mr.Wizard,

I'll have to give RC a whirl one day, right now though I am learning everything I can about model ship building. I think my Zellars came out looking great for a first time scratch build.

I am still working on my Enterprise kit by Constructo, applying deck fittings. I do have another project I have been doing some research on, USS Independence CV-62, circa 1959-1960. I have a brother who severed on board her during that era. This will be my next build.

USS Cone (Gearing Class) DD866 in 1960

Post by Paulooi »

Hello everyone,

Took some time out from my own list of projects to build this on as a special order for a customer.

USS Cone comes from the "Lost Years" of ship kit-building, the period between 1945 and 1965. Very few kits accurately portray ships from that period because historically the Korean conflict was not known to be naval although the USN did maintain carrier operations and shore bombardment in support of UN troops. Following VJ Day in 1945, the Navy scaled down dramatically and many destroyers ended the war after the Magic Carpet operations to send troops home by being mothballed in home ports along the West Coast. This changed with the Korean conflict and the advent of jets required AA retrofits to keep up with the new speed of the aerial threat. This is reflected in the USS Cone with radar guided 3" guns which was really a 10-year stop-gap until the introduction of the first seaborne AA missiles starting 1960. The other new threat was silent running Soviet subs that required a combination of old-fashioned depth charges, new homing torpedoes fired from WW2 quad tubes and "hedgehog" launchers to neutralize. These too were stop-gaps until the introduction of ASROC launchers and helicopter-borne homing torpedoes in the 1960's. Building this ship required a lot of research, some guesswork based on old b/w photos, and asking some veterans about the armament.

Paulooi,

Your Cone looks nice, nice, nice! I wish that I had had it to refer to when I was doing my Harry E. Hubbard Sumner class. Looks like we had to do some of the same modifications i.e. bridge area, 3" guns, tripod mast, etc. I too, made my Hubbard for someone else. It was hard to let go of it.

My Harry E. Hubbard is depicted in her 1962-1966 configuration.

Did the Gearing class have a tapered mast? All the plans show this, but from my research, they had a mast constructed of various diameters of pipe. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Cadman!

You reffer to Gearings framed or not????
Did you see photos of the mast of this class that I posted in page 5 of this thread?

The pre-FRAM Sumner/Gearing classes did have a tapered masts. I would recommend you go to the Floating Drydock web site. There is a e-book available on Sumner/Gearing ships. This is an excellent recource for anyone building a model.
