Thank you Song for continuing to be a scratch building inspiration! It would of course be easier to add various commercially available items such as chains, anchors etc which are very nice and probably better than what I can make but the challenge of devising ways to make these things by hand is satisfying. No matter how formidable the task, it's not as difficult as one might imagine once you take it on.

Forecastle: Today's progress was to make the stands for holding the balsa floats. One each currently just to test the fit of the rafts, each rack will hold two rafts. These were clever, a hinged quick release panel at the bottom could be released and the rafts slide overboard.

Other progress: The "P" boat, roughed out and primed the hull. This boat, also a 36 footer from the Swamps of Louisiana was lighter and stronger than the LCVP and could be lowered loaded. This was the "command" boat used by the boat officer to heard his cats.

Roughing out the P Boat. LCP (L) command boat. I think, but don't know for this use that the forward .30 cal's were eliminated. Command boat for the Assault force and probably also mail boat and Captain's Gig

P Boat in primer, skeg, prop and rudder not yet added.

This may be a bit late for your build.

The records of Barbour Boat Works are available in the Special Collections of the Joiner Library at East Carolina University. Barbour constructed dozens of types of small boats and small auxiliarys that the US Navy used. These include motor whale boats, personnel boats, harbor tugs, landing craft, patrol boats, cutters, fire boats, gasoline barges, yard oilers, mine sweeping boats, submarine chasers, tankers, destroyers and more.

Many of the blueprints for these vessels are available from the library at a very reasonable cost. You can contact them here:

Thanks Hank, the drawings you sent me really helped! She finally gets placed on the number four hatch with two LCVP's on each side.

I just found the six pad eyes for the fenders on the drawing and will try to install them. Kind of a fun distraction to make a small model within a model.

Current progress on the fantail. Nothing will be glued down till the lifelines are completed.

Thank You Song! Yesterdays effort was working on lifelines, pipe rails specifically. My soldering is getting better, but lacking good heat sinks (and can't go find any) basic structure is soldered and secondary is attached with CA.

Here it is mid April, and it's snowing, hard!

Wet paper towel makes a good heat sink. Just be sure it is wrapped around the parts near the solder joint.

Even a small amount of water works well. Water absorbs a lot of heat before it vaporizes - much more per unit weight than most other substances.

It's a Haskell, modeled after the ship that was in "Away All boats" USS Randall AP 224

Phil: I tried using a small piece of wet paper towel a a heat sink! Worked well, thanks!

SG Radar for the foremast. Housing turned from aluminum, antenna is carved from basswood.

To make the antenna I sawed the front contour, hollowed, sawed the back contour and trimmed. It was easier to use some putty on the front to smooth because of the small concave surface.

SC-2 for the Main Mast and SG for the Fore Mast.
