Calling all IJN Myoko-class (妙高) fans

thank you guys! i have been working on the main funnel for some time now, the most i hate about funnels is having to add the footrails around it. it seems i always slack alot when i get to this step but i'll try to have it painted by the end of the week so i can move to the second one.

thanks Marek! it's a bit of a challenge when you have 3 different kinds of P.E sets,sometimes it takes me a few minutes to look around all them to see if i can find what i really want to finish up something hehe .

According to Warship Pictorial 17's Record of Movement for the pacific War she had the experimental Type 21-3 installed on 13 August 1943 and here is the thing that confuses me she had another Type 21-2 and a Type 22-4 radar installed sometime from November 22 to January 22 of 1944 while she was drydocked at Sasebo. it's a little confusing with those dash 2 and 3 radar designations, why 3 and then 2 ? doesn't make sense to me. hope it helps and don't make it worst..

One picture of Myoko that shows that the rangefinders windows where removed during the late 30's modernizations(or is it at 1940 ? I dont quite remember at the moment) and just the overhangs of number 1# turret remains. Just to clarify a conversation we had with Dan in IJN Takao class thread.I posted a coloured picture of IJN Takao during late 30's sea trails there too.

Edit:What is that white spot she has on the rear of number 1 funnel.Anyone knows ?

Good eye, Atma. The "white" spot is just a washout from sun glare.

Dan do you know if the heat shields on IJN Myoko class cruisers where different from each ship ? From the kits of Fujimi and Hasegawa's each one had heat shiled minus IJN Ashigara, and IJN Myoko had on number 1#, 2# 3# and 4# turrets while IJN Nachi and IJN Haguro had on number 1#, 2# and 4# and IJN Nachi had also a sligtly different kind/shape of heat shield. At least Fujimi offers seperate turrets for IJN Nachi.

Good for you, Atma, that is an EXCELLENT question. The Myoko class carried the Type D turret and yes, there were variations in the heat shielding configuration between mounts, and ships. Attached is a guide from the Gran Prix Shuppan volume on the IJN CAs. From top to bottom is Myoko, Ashigara, Nachi & Haguro. On the right, note how the #1 rangefinder was cut down to a shell.

The more I learn aboout Japanese ships, the more I think I will never learn!
I was happy as a kid building a takao kit (in the 1970's) thought it was very nice. then when I re-entered ship modeling in the 90's I learned the turrets had a heat shield, now, in the 21st century I learn they had different turrets with different heat shields on the same ship!!
I'm glad it is a hobby!

(but I still dream of building that 100% accurate and perfectly made ship model)
