Re: Calling all USS Nimitz class (CVN) fans
The only problem with Trumpeter 1/700 Nimitz class Carriers is that I can't afford to collect them all!
I bought the USS Stennis because it was a bargain, not my 1st pick for a particular ship, and the kit is AWESOME!
If I scrounge for another it would have to be 'Nimitz 2005', or if they come out with the USS Reagan I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

So many models... So little time...

Re: Calling all USS Nimitz class (CVN) fans
I will get the Trumpeter 1/700 CVN-71 very soon now
I ordered boxes of additional planes: F-14,F-18, EA-6, C-2,SH-60 and S-3. Would anyone know how many of each does a Carrier wing have? I know there are the following:
VF-31 (F-14D)
VF-213 (F-14D)
VFA-15 (F/A-18C)
VFA-87 (F/A-18C)
VAQ-141 (EA-6B)
VAW-124 (E-2C)
VS-24 (S-3B)
HS-3 (SH/HH-60F/H)
but I do not know how many planes each group does actually have.
Thanks,
Arnaud

Re:
Lst year there were a lot of photo's published of the USS Harry S Trumann CVN 75 taken in Stokes Bay taken in 2007 or 2005. Somebody took a lot of very nice and interested detail shots if he has been walking outside around Its was excellent
On portside there was a pontoon. Alongside that pontton was on one photo first only one orange painted coastal tanker and later there was a second I am very interested in the shots of the two tankers when alongside
IS there somebody please who can help me. I will be very happy to have them. When there are more photo's available they will be also very welcome to.
Please help
thanks and regards

Re: Calling all USS Nimitz class (CVN) fans
Hi all
First of all, let's start with a quick introduction as this is my first post on this website. I'm Florent, 35 years old, I m living in France (so sorry for my poor english). I'm building kits for something like 20 years now (airplanes only) and the Trumpeter Nimitz is a first experience for me.
I started working on the kit with the support of many aftermarket kits (GMM, Tom Model Work) and would like to represent it in the 80's. I bought the CD from RayBean but I have some doubt concerning the period and its configuration.
I scratchbuild a platform on the right side of the island on which one we can see guns (Vulcan ?). It seems that this new platform appeared after a first ugrade/rebuid in the middle of the 80's ? Is it correct ? I noticed also on pictures the presence of new platform with Vulcan on the left back side such at the rear of the carrier. The platfom on the front right side which was at the origin a 1/2 circle has been transformed also....All those transformations have been done during the middle 80's upgrade or later ?
I'm a little bit lost....
Find below a photo of the island...it will be easier than many many words.

As you can imagine, I have to be sure that all the carrier has to be built with the correct configuration.
Many thanx for your help.
Florent

Be careful which ships you are looking at. As far as i know the forward starboard weapon sponsor is unchanged on the nimitz and Eisenhower.
A newer design with both CIWS and sea sparrow launchers appeared from the Carl Vinson onwards (Slightly changing again after the Roosevelt)

Re: Calling all USS Nimitz class (CVN) fans
Hi Florent,
First off, your English is very good!
I think that you have it right. I just looked at my photos of Nimitz 1986 from Ray Beans CD. The CIWS Platform on the island extends to the edge of the flight deck and has 5 supports under it. Yours looks pretty close.
Simon is correct. The Nimitz and Ike are just about the same along their careers. They both had the CIWS Platform on the Island and one on the stern in the middle of the opening. I think that all of the Nimitz Class had/have the same CIWS Sponson on the Port Side Forward in front of the angle deck edge. So if you can not find the photo of the Nimitz you need, try looking at the Eisenhower. CVN-70 thru CVN-75 had 4 CIWS and they were located differently on the various sponsons.
Keep up the good work,
Mark

Excellent work Florent!!
I've just purchased Trumpeters big Nimitz myself and am looking for info on the changes around the same time as yourself. I want to be able to use Tomcats, Hornets and Prowlers so I'll have to update it.
That one picture you posted has helped me enormously! Any more? (Hint Hint)

A interesting question .as I kown the nuclear carriers "Booklet of General Plans" is classified .So how ture and accurate are the plans? BTW It shows an outboard profile, superstructure deck and a flight deck. Whats superstructure deck for a supercarrier?
Thanks!

Very interesting plan of Nimitz Class.Seems that R.Reagan has only 6 decks for the island instead of 7 in Nimitz.Any confirmation or plans of decks?

calling all USS Nimitz class(CVN) fans
Hi there!
I guess I am the next victim of the Trumpy 1/350 NIMITZ...you'd think it would be a well published subject on the internet, but I am having a hard time finding pictures of the ship in it's configuration after completing its major refit in 83, but before 1992.no shortage of photos of her current looks..could anyone please point me in the right direction to some photos showing the stern , the weapon sponsons , the ship's Island from any angle from the time interval mentioned above and the location of CIWS(particularly the one on the stern and on the sponson on the starboard of the island) ?
also, does anyone know what year exactly they changed the big white deck number to hollow ones?
thanx
on changing the subject(still Nimitz though, small smile:)I am sure all of us Nimitz fans would like to build or just see the most accurate Nimitz Class ships here.I noticed a few but very obvious problems with the Trumpeter kit. Some I know how to fix, some I don't.But I'd like change them all..the most annoying ones are the shape of the forward flight deck.the angle on the starboard side is WAAAY to shallow...gonna be a lot of work to fix that..the second thing could be even more time consuming:the TIE DOWN points-what is the deal with those?they are the wrong size(waay too big)wrong shape since they use 5 point tie downs on carriers, not the ones that are molded on, they are too deep as well and lastly, they are too far apart.there should be more of them...unfortunately this second problem I don't know how to fix properly...could anyone help me in correcting these somehow?I don't think that just filling them up with putty is the solution..of course I only mentioned 2 of the several mistakes made by the Trumpeter that a person has to correct to achieve a great looking Nimitz, but these are the 2 people often leave unchanged. on the other hand I have seen work from guys on this forum whose work is already making my ship looking like crap and I haven't even started on it:)
everyone keep up the good work and thank you for your input...sorry for the long topic.
Laci
