Jose, your building is crossing overseas and reaching Brazil............ but I'm a silent watcher too..... your building is very nice, something to contemplate...... keep the progress coming, we all are with you........ as sometime I told Ron Horabin, my wife follows these threads, and please, do not disappoint a young lady!!!

Dear Jose: you are not slow, your building progress is normal............. ARH is the only "road-runner" for model building that I know............. your thread is very interesting, and be sure of this!

Hull plating and island - 26 NOV 07

This time, I�m adding the hull plating details, which were quite visible in any CVE...I used 0,5mm, but next time I�ll have to use a much more thinner plastic, as the effect is overdone, in my oppinion. I guess I�ll have to sand them down a little...
Also, I made a couple more advances, on the island.

Very nice...I like the hull plating. Once you prime and paint it, I think it will look just fine.

Gorgeous work so far! I second Martin's statement about the hull plating. Once everything is painted and dull coated the effect will be lessened a bit and it will look just fine

I really like it. Just a little sanding and painting will slightly decrease plating thickness. You can scribe also vertical lines at hangar deck plating (they were placed just opposite flight deck foundation girders. Note that ar the bow plating was reaching the bow deck.

The plating looks good to my eye. I had a chance last spring to see USS North Carolina up close and was astonished to see just how prominent the plating was. See: http://www.warshipmodels.com/~users/Ste ... 003274.jpg

True but that is on a BB not a CVE aka �Kaiser Coffins� you here about IJN AP shells going through the whole ship without going BOOM!! Anyways I think they look nice too. On my corvette I just had fun painting the plates, but if you want to be accurate then... just a bit of sanding should do it!

I couldn�t find any (decent) shell plating details or plans for any Casablanca CVE. Those that came with the AOTS book on the Gambier Bay are almost useless, in my idea. So, I had to use some "artistic license", coupled with some real CVE hull photos. One of the things that you�ll imediatelly notice, if comparing with other "heavier" warships, is that the plating is very thin, almost impossible to see. On the distance, you can only see "lines" across the entire hull, while on a battleship, you can easily see the different plates.
I still have to finish the propellers shaft housing and the bow, and then, I�ll start adding some paint....

That's true that it is lack of good plans and clear photos for Casablanca's. Researching this topic some time ago I have found some showing hull plating. Ok there are blurred and showing only some parts of the hulls. All of them were from Navsource of similar websites.
Regarding vertical plating of the hangar sides it was common practice in USN (I think). The same way was build Essex's CV'sa and CVL's (tou can see it at photos showing USS Cabot during scrapping). General practice that all above hangar deck (including flight deck) was build as huge superstructure. That's why there were plating on the sides of the hangar was different than on the hull below. Girders were giving good support for external plating and in fact there was no reason to introduce additional tons of steel. Girders placement you'll find in your copy of AOTS.
Try to find USS Thetis Bay showing her after post war rebuild, I remember one stern shoot where such vertical plating is barely visible.
