I don't have the volume but I believe it is primarily a text-based history of IJN DD's with schematic illustrations, not photos. One of several ship type history volumes that Shizuo Fukui wrote up.

That sounds like fun. Are you building the whole class? Please post photos and information.

I forgot to mention that I have a pet theory regarding Shiranui. As we know, she lost her entire forecastle to a torpedo in mid 1942. Well, given that Harusame suffered the same sort of damage 6 months later and gained a new, Yugumo style bridge upon rebuilding, why not Shiranui? She could have been the original test bed for this change. Too bad there's no late war photo of her.

My life of building IJN destroyer models was so easy before I met you guys.

Too many options and too many theories. Ha

hmmmmm This theory regarding Shiranui gaining a new, Yugumo style bridge upon rebuilding is very interesting....I have read one time that when IJN Destroyers were hit that there forecastles often collapsed (I believe this statment is in tullys ( battle of the surago strait). And when you say " lost her entire forecastle to a torpedo" to what extent was the damage compared to the Harusame? Now I know Harusame had her back broken and was saved due to being beached to prevent from sinking. Also was Shiranui's damage to her forecastle at all salvageable? and between in this 6 month of Shiranui's damage and Harusame damage are there any other accounts of this new bridge rebuilding procedure ever happening? And yeah and that is to bad there's no late war photo of her.

Both ships lost everything forward of funnel #1. There are photos of both in this condition. No time to scan and post this week.

Hi guys,
on another topic - questions re Yukikaze painting during Ten-Go op in 1945:
1) black funnel tops - the painting diagram in Fujimi 1/700 Yukikaze (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10125125t2/60/2) suggests the bottom line of the black part to be almost parallel to the deck. However most WWII destroyer photos I have seen show it to be parallel to the funnel top (as seen e.g. on the Harusame above). What do you suggest?
2) I presume no white bands (as suggested by Pit-Road at http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10080875t2/60/2) as these were pre-war
3) both Pit-Road and Fujimi suggest a triangular emblem on #1 funnel but this is not present at other instructions (like Tamiya http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10077026t3/60/3 but that one even shows ship names in Japanese on hull sides, which is again pre-war...)
Does anybody have any better photo of Yukikaze in April 45 or any other reference or at least any view with a reasonable backing? Thanks!

Let me first post the Shiranuhi photos. These are the companion photos to the photo posted on p3 of this thread. All taken at Maizuru NY in early September, 1942.

The Fujimi painting instructions are simply incorrect. The IJN had a prescribed set of procedures for funnel banding, including the black band. It's always parallel to the rake of the funnel top. This true for all ships, not just DDs. So, for instance, the funnel bands in the Shiranui photo above is correct. First image below is the basic guide as demonstrated on an Akizuki class, from the Gran Prix Shuppan DD volume.

And, while there is no clear photo of Yukikaze during the Ten Ichigo operation, photos of the other DDs indicate funnel bands, by division. So, the three Kagero types appear to have two bands on the #2 funnel. Below are Isokaze and what most experts believe to be Hamakaze during the operation.

As to the marking on the funnel, I believe it is either a white triangle or a white chrysanthenum. I have to check further.

It was always my understanding that the ships in the operation had a white chrysanthamum painted on the forward funnel. I have my research and info buried somewhere. Thanks for the great photos.

Hello

Can you tell me which better kit is : Tamiya Yukikaze or Hasegawa Yukikaze 1945?

Is it possible to use the Lion Roar set for Tamyia Kagero with the Hasegawa Yulikaze 1945 ?

thanks

Hello guest.. What scale are we talking about?.I'm guessing 1/350? if so I would say the Tamyia kit would probably be better and also this way you wont have to worry too much about Photo-etch parts not fitting as well
Also from a Dom

Both kits are very well detailed and accurate on almost all details. The Tamiya kit can be built as either a waterline display or full hull display; the Hasegawa version is only a full hull display.

The biggest difference/problem is that the Hasegawa kit is surprisingly overscale. However, that doesn't stop a talented modeler from building it into a superb model. Witness the example below from master Japanese modeler Noboru Yahagi
