SPS-12 replaced SPS-6 in many units, also the area considered too small for SPS-12 actually mounted SPS-37 or SPS-40 in some units, from pics i have seen it looks like SPS-12, but maybe she had SPS-6 earlier.

Thanks very much for your kind offer Nektarios. I think I will try and paint these stripes as I find it easier to weather paint than decals (I've had bad experiences with the CG decals during the weathering step so now I'm a paint-totaller except for tricky things

) I'll let you know though!

Little heads up if you are building a Trumpeter 1/700 CVN:
Well OK it's gorgeous, all the more desapointing to find out that in the white and yellow middle stripe the dashes are not the right length. There are 18 dashes in reality and 17 in the Trumpy decals/deck engraving. This leads to a last dash being yellow when it should be white. This is disappointing as it is so easy to spot, how could they get it wrong?

==> Some more putty & sanding before being eventually able to paint the markings. It would look too weird with the engraving in the middle of the dashes
There are some more mistakes and missing markings, I will post on them later.

The good thing is you noticed it, you cannot beat Research, Research your subject, then double check, get as many pics of your subject from the period that you are modeling her from, then compare and check that the pics are all dated correctly, do not take dates on pics as being gospel, researchers for the models have been known to use misdated pics, this and a lack of Knowledge is more often than not the reason for mixed era models, Italeri/Testors carriers are a good example of this.

Good advice John

I have noticed many subtle changes in the USS Forrestal in the time frame I wish to do her in 1959-61 and have found pics of 1962 which show the foreward 5" guns gone, deck markings were also a bit different along with some radar masts.
I have the Italeri 1/720 Nimitz in the works and will have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up on it.

Thank you Carl but congratulations belong to all those that have posted on this thread.
The idea of this post and of the one John has started " Carrier builders what s on the slipway" belong to both of us.
We were chatting and were dissappointed by the few threads on picture post on modern subjects. It was mostly WW II stuff.
We could understand why this happened but we decided to start one post each so that people interested in post WW II stuff would start posting pics of their work. In the beginning we didn t expect to have more than 1700 posts combined but we ve reached a number of posts and views that very few threads on picture post have reached. So it seems we have succeeded our goal.

Totally agree there Nektarios, over 1,700 between us, i never expected anywhere near this when we started, Congrats on the 1,000 milestone and looking forward to the next 1,000,
I still have 3-4 sets of flightdeck action pics yet, i will post one at a time

that will get me to the 1,000 mark
finding time to scan them is the problem, i actually need to post the remainder of the last lot i scanned at some time.

Good summary on research John, I totally agree and that is why I am not so keen on WWII stuff, documentation is so hard to find! Especially when compared to the incredible number of pictures provided on navy.mil, perfectly described and dated for example.
Good job Carl, I still do not understand how you guys can build about a model every other week. I've been on my CG for almost a year and I started CVN-71 a month ago and it's really the very beginning of it

Agree about the WW2 builds, i spent more time researching than building. what decals do you need for San Jacinto ?

Brilliant Carl!

.
You have to admit Kidcurrie and Nektarios, I bet you never thought these threads you started would become so varied in their subjects?! Lets not forget guys that 1000 posts means some serious model building has been going on to get there and that is what we should be congratulating.
Lets keep it going!

Well i have to admit i didn t expect this to happen 1000 posts... WOW. The more i think about it i realise how big this number is. Before i start chatting with John all i wanted to do was to build 15 CV/CVNs for the 600-ship navy plus some other famous U.S. carriers like Midway. But the dangerous thing about carriers is that its like an infectious disease spreading very very rapidly. I don t know which one had the carrier disease first but John never intended to build CVA-42 or any pre-war carriers. Now he wants to build them all from CV-1to CVN-77. Likewise i wanted to build around 20-22 carriers. Now i ll try to build all postwar carriers including the converted Essex class. Another problem is that you can t choose the timeframe you want to build your carrier. I have had this problem with CVN-65. Starfighter decals has decals for 5-6 different deployments. First cruise, around the world cruise, Vietnam 1968, first Tomcat deployment 1974, and 2001 deployment. I have one CVN-65 2007 configuration built and i m intending to build it 3 or 4 more times. So be prepared for more model building and posting in both threads.

Congrats on 1000 posts! This is a great topic and one of my favorites. Now to hit the 2k mark
And WOW three JFKs going at once! I dragged my Italeri America and Nimi kits out yesterday and have begun marking out the chopping needed to do JFK. Mine will be as decomissioned. I think. Anyways, looking forward to seeing yours Nektarios. You're right, carrier building is infectious and, I fear, probably chronic. I've caught it too (four building at the moment, plus JFK and one more waiting in the stash) although my goals are not as lofty (for the moment.)
Great looking DD Carl, as always excellent.
Same for your CVNX Nektarios.

Nah, carrier building isn't infectious... you just have to know about self control...
Hmm... sitting here as I look at my plans for the Grossfleugzeugkreuzer A IIa, the Shinano, one of the IJN CVL's, plus the Vladivostok... ok it's maybe a little infectious. I just manage to keep back from too much because I know it's damn annoying to build the planes.
