Nektarios-why is Johns JFK Island painted Black on the Port side, and yours isn't/Nimitz CVNX aren't either?

I realise I have been beaten to it judging by todays Gallery post (which is a very nice Gold Rover, Cris if you are reading this), but here is the beginning of my 1/700 RFA Gold Rover, part of the push to have some auxiliaries for my fleet. I took an Airfix County Class DDG Hull, did a cut and shut job the local garage would be proud of, and gave it a new deck. At the moment I am aiming to finish the bow area and start on the rear superstructure, but my two carriers are taking prioirity for resources and my attention.



Also in a continuation of me building British auxiliary vessels, here ia nother RMAS Tug Powerful, and RMAS Waterfowl (a water carrier). In the real world, since Serco-Denholm took over the RMAS, these water carriers are going to be replaced by barges and tugs built by Damen of the Netherlands.

Firstly congratulations on your builds. I like very much to see scratchbuilt ships. I have made many conversions myself but never really attempted something like what your doing now. I hope that if i find enough courage i ll try to make a full scratchbuild sometime in the future.

Now about the island color question. From the early 60s till mid 1990s all conventionally powered carriers had their islands' port side painted black. This has been asked before and the answer i read most of the times is that its for the jet exhaust.
But i don t find this explanation satisfactory since nuclear powered carriers would have this problem too. I have also pics of Coral sea with the island painted gray. John's CV-67 is 1990 configuration(DS) mine is in its last deployment at the time it was painted overall gray.

Thanks for the comments! From somebody who turns out really beautiful models like you those comments are really encouraging when my scratchbuilds have their problems during building (especially late at night )!

I was going to suggest that they were painted black because of the exhausts from the ship, but then why would you obscure flight deck operations-maybe some googlage is needed !

I have been toying with the idea of re-scaling these to 1/700 and using for templates for sheet styreen, but unfortunately the project is not progressing up the priority list very quickly.

Thanks for that-I have been looking for some Albion plans as well, and they are already scaled for 1/700!

Wave Knoght is next, on my list after Gold Rover, but i'll put the Fort George plans away for a rainy day!

While building my new carrier CV-67 during the breaks during its construction i have managed to finish 3 new replenishment ships. Here are some photos.

Nektarios, you really kill me! During the breaks from your carrier build you finish 3 ships just like that? Unbelievable. And they look great! I'll never understand how you manage to build so quickly. Really amazing work! Kudos to you...

Very Nice-must be costly though, being resin ships??

Actually they were 90% finished when i started the carrier so in the breaks during the construction of JFK i added small parts and stuff.

Thats the only problem i have with resin ships. Cost is much more than a plastic ship. But if you think about it if you add PE to a plastic kit and aftermarket parts the difference ain t so big

Thanks Arnaud. What i m trying to do is build a 600 ship U.S. Navy fleet. Since thisplan has never materialised i ll build it as a what-if. This gives me the freedom to make a U.S. fleet as i would like it to be. Upto now i have built 328 U.S. Navy ships.

I also want to build several postwar carriers and surface ships that have participated in important post WW ii conflicts mainly Korean war and Vietnam.

BTW i ve sent you thecarrier vehicles i promised.

I am a medical doctor. and i have built this fleet during the last 15 years. I am 32 yo now so i guess i ll have enough time to complete my dream.
