Make the way you want.
Remember that when the ship is fully loaded with fuel, ammo, food, fresh water, and other provisions that it will sit lower in the water.

Every photo will probably show some differences.

Also a boot strip can collect growth so it is more practical to have the bottom paint come up right to the waterline if at all possible.
Boot stripes were for looks. The numbers painted on the hull provide the proper weight and balance information.

It's been a while since I visited this site. The Missouri is sitting quietly on a shelf in the room where our grandkids sleep when they're visiting. I gave up thinking about getting it to the real ship in Pearl Harbor since I am almost certain that the main mast would give way at the bottom joint and would be almost impossible to fix in the field.

Some posts back someone asked why they used the teak decks. The question is in two parts; why wood? and then why teak? Wood was used to reduce the effects of shrapnel. I would absorb bomb and bullet fragments, not ricochet them all over the place. It was functional not aesthetic. Why teak? Because it holds up so well in wet environments.

I'm enjoying reading about the guys building the ship in larger scales. I would love to do that, but right now I am on a massive model railroad rebuild. After moving to Louisville I decided to rebuild my old layout and enlarge it 50%. Since finishing the battleship, I've been on the rr build 100%. I just fitted the track and vinyl roadbed and getting reading to glue it all down.

Here's the ship in its resting spot.

Nice looking model! Yes transporting them is a challenge. There are several models on dispay below deck currently.

Thanks for sharing! T

Looking at some photos of Missouri being towed into Pearl, it appeared she was up by the bow quite a bit due to light ship loading forward, and amazingly the boot topping was painted to fit with this light ship condition. Will have to see if I can find some good photos with draft markings bow and stern to confirm or deny this. My boot top is currently the 8 ft vareity and of equal draft bow to stern.

This is of course the current state of the ship as a museum and not in an active status which I am modeling

Cheers. Tom

look at the photos in www.navsource.org/01/0163k1.jpg : www.navsource.org/01/01631c ; www.navsource.org/01/01631i.

There is also a photo of Mo just leaving drydock for final positioning to the Museum location that appears to show the ship riding high by the bow.

note the difference in the position of the curve of the prow and straight stem.

This is actually quite interesting and has closeup pan views of a number of parts of the ship!

Thanks,

Thanks:

looks as if the top of the black four foot boot topping is about 37 ft aft from a photo take on the same day with the drydock flooded, and only 25 ft forward in the above photo? Anyone know the origin and purpose of the short bright red/orange stripes fore and aft?

37ft. aft of what?
25 feet forward of what?

Or do you mean up and down?

Makes no sense.

I suppose I could have been more wordy and specified bow and stern rather than fore and aft which referred to the fore and aft draft markings. The discussion had been about the height of the boot topping.

So is this right? How about the stern, is the waterline at the stern also 37ft from the baseline?

Yes I understand . But why did you not just say ABOVE or BELOW the base line?
In that previous post above, with photo you can tell that these must be old markings because the ship does not have the front antenna thing built on it yet.

from my understanding the baseline is the line where the ship rest, so the flat bottom. The DWL (where it meets the water when loaded) is set 37ft from the baseline. The waterline black stripe goes DOWN from the DWL 8 or 9 ft.

So from my understanding there is no BOTTOM from baseline, since the baseline itself is the bottom of the ship.

The modifications being done to the superstructure should tell you what time period the photo is from.

This is what was in the photo caption:

"A port bow view of the battleship USS MISSOURI (BB 63) undergoing reactivation and modernization. Location: LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD, CALIFORNIA (CA) UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA) Date Shot: 1 Feb 1985"
