Words can not describe the attention to detail and the subsequent execution. I will be lucky if I could achieve a fraction of this detail or quality on my 1/350 Kirishima.

I started task with boats

17m motor pinnace:




will be rebuilt with such set :

in order to make assembly the gretings all internal volume had to be removed:




after first cutter I came to conclusion that much better is work with full frame Much easier to hold and control.




and effect of eviscerating




all error and inequalities will be cover by PE details. I decided to separate all boats into decks, hulls and others since I think it will easier to paint precisely. But slightly more difficult to assemble - it's going to be "clean" assembling - items already painted...

Let's begin the fight with water...

IJN Kirishima is going to be seated in quite rough ocean. That means underwater part of the hull might be exposed. I needed to recreate it. by 5 sheets of 1mm evergreen I made ca 4m of hull. Should be enough:






new hull joined with box one:






the plan is to fix only underwater part and completely create the ocean. Model will stay detachable to the end of the project. She will be placed on very end. I'm going to try technique shared by Chris Flodberg. Thanks Chris !

I'm not quite sure if Fujimi didn't make a mistake here. I have my own PE set for Kirishima. But even using the Fujimi PE set it's imposible to place the midship parts properly. They are just to big




I made corrections by cutting out a part of deck and also remove thickness underneath :

I designed also the deck searchlight. Box ones and even aftermarket ones are not very fine here. Look like one piece. Within PE set I can model them much delicate - even inside light source can be created....

She looks great. Beautifully clean and crisp. The pagoda tower is extraordinary. And, for once, the funnel grab rings don't bother me as overscale when viewed from further away, though I'm less certain about those on the aft superstructure. But, that's just me. It takes absolutely nothing away from your effort, Greg.

Yes - I have the same feeling... I'm still looking for more appropriate solution...
For handrails on vertical walls (as superstructures, barbets) I think I found it. It's already aplied on Kirishima. But technical access rails ( I believe they were mounted around funels, in some areas of superstructures and near the observation platforms) seem to be with bigger offset since they were used for climbing and walking aorund. I'm trying to draw and etch shorter pins which hold the rails. But fixing them on plastic surface is not so easy... I'm still trying anyway...

I just spent the last 1-1/2 reading this topic and viewing your build, as so many have already stated the work is very impressive, building the main superstructure out of PE as well as the main decks truly a work of art, designing PE is a very hard task in its self but to do what you have done here is remarkable and is something I would love to do but have really no clue how to do it. Again very impressive work and I'll be following this build and hope to see more of this type of work in the future.

I started working on water. I will be following Chris technique but use yellow thermo isolation foam.

I shaped the foam with lighter into ocean like surface ...











and here I have faced a problem. I tried acrylic gel, PVA glue, CA glue. Nothing grips strong enough to yellow foam. I could tear all of them quite easy.... I checked - it's polyurethane foam. Any advice please....?

Great work

For the sea base, this material is not the most appropriate. It has many holes and presents difficulties for gluing.
The most appropriate is used by Chris Flodberg or styofoam porex.

additionally my stand is short - not much space for Kelvin effect:




IJN Kirishima will be placed just after starboard turn, with speed of 24 knots. By this should be 3 waken waves. On starboard I will try to model bow wave by foam and cotton. Middle ship one will not be visible and stern is a mixture of wake water and turbulence due to turn. Port side is without any Kelvin effect since there is pressure of the hull on water volume. This is how I can see it. But I'm landlubber Any comments are very welcome !




Kongo class had very nice and slim hull. Then distortions of water at such speed should not be remarkable...

Man, fantastic work on those halyard lines! Are those your PE pulleys?

There are several photos of the Kongos generating wakes at speed. Do you need those?

Just knowing how tiny 1/700 really is makes the detail in your work effing phenomenal.
