well i always wanted to visit germany and see where my ancestors come from , it does feel strange to be a born south african but yet feeling like that a part is missing . Maybe someday , my girl lives in cape town and if i am lucky i will move to cape town next year , how is germany ? ?

Dear friends,
after having wasted my first week of holidays with getting well again, the cold has now been weak enough to re-enter the basement and go on with Renown. I�ve built two ventilators, crane platforms, eyebrows for the hangar portholes and supports for decks. Planking of flight deck is done now, too!

Wonderful attention to detail as well. The porthole eyebrows (scuttle rigoles) add reality to the model.

Dear friends,

my poor Renown is a project of delays... Due to low temperatures in the basement, I only started works this weekend. Maybe I�m faster than our state with building Berlin�s new airport, because I have discovered mass production today: Laminating turrets in silicon-moulds. I�d been quite scared before I started, but everything has come out to my pleasure. I pushed the turrets upside down into a box built of Lego (good not to have given away these memories of childhood ), filled with "Elastosil" 2-k-silicon. Today I started with the 15 in turret, laminating some thin layers of glasscloth and filled the mould for the MA-turret with resin, elongated with microballoons.
Tomorrow will be the day of judgement and first results hopefully will perpetuate my euphoria...

thank you ery much for your kind comments!
And thank you for kepping your fingers crossed, the first pair of turrets came loose of the moulds without braking! Only with the 15 in one, it�s been a too narrow shave with glasscloth, on starboard side there�s a gap to the future bottom, so I fixed it with a piece of stickytape and a bit microballoons-paste.
In order to avoid such misshappenings, I invented the beta-version of 15 in turret with a seam of that paste right from the start.
Lets see tomorrow whether this version works;-)

Hello dear friends!

After a little break, here are the first results of my casting-experiments: You all have been right being optimistic!
Despite some air bubbles and other minor spots, all went well. Today I have drilled the first holes for the 15'. Hope in the next days I can finish the basic works with the hanagar, airbrush the underwater hull a second time and get ready for trials (as I wanted to already two years ago...)

wow its looking good , i am using plaster of paris to cast with and i am getting decent results from the plaster , your barrels are quite shiny what are they made off ? ? Kind regards

I thought of using plaster for casting, too - but how do you prevent it from breaking apart? Or do you make new casts for each part needed?
The 15� barrels are made of aluminium, but I guess for the 4,5�ones I�ll take brass.

Since we had moved to Dortmund with Renown resting at my Mom�s place, it�s hard to find some time to work, as often as there is work to do at Mom�s house, too - and a wife at home in need of moral support. But I hope when she has finished her Ph.D there will be more time to play with shipmodels...
Anyway, I�m always wondering how fast and perfect you manage to finish your little gems! I hope I�ll post some updates, too!!

middag middag joachim , well its all in the mixture ratio between water and plaster of paris that affects its durability , the walls of mold should just be thick enough + - about 1 cm thick then it would be strong enough to take a lot of abuse , i have casted barrels in plaster of paris and it came out very good and the barrels were made out of white metal and lead , i have even burned the plaster of paris mold with a blow lamp and it endured the punishment with amazing results

again a little progress can be seen with Renown:

The new rack is done - final painting below waterline could start now, and: work at the funnels is proceeding, trying to cpoy our Admiral�s litoplate-technique. Going quite well and fast!!!

Other fields are still in progress as I don�t have an idea how to solve my smoke liquid tank problem. But I guess the next days there might a lightning!
