I'm itching to start this old girl.......the trouble is, I'm equally itching not to make a complete arse of it.....at 70 its not cheap (for me anyway) so you've got to at least make some effort at accuracy....I suppose the best policy really is to wait until EJ completes his, then read this thread while building it!!

Ok, I know the answer to this is probably "bits of them all"....HOWEVER, thats not an option for a one-off ship.....so....if I were only able to buy one PE set which would you cats recommend?

Trumpeter 1/350 HOOD Photo Etch and Barrels

Post by Richard Durham »

I just started putting a few parts together on the 1/350 Trumpeter HOOD and so far so good. I chose the Gold Medal Models HOOD Photo Etch set, because in the few ships that I have built, the GMM photo etch sets have been easiest to use and more robust and forgiving. I have tried Toms photo etch on other models and thought it over etched in some places and too easily unintentionally deformed. I have used WEM photetch only once (on a 1/700 PRINZ EUGEN) and it worked well, love their doors and hatches, but it is more difficult to get in the US. I tend to limit my photo etch to hand rails, radars, catapults and cranesno bulkhead replacements, so no need for the Lion Roar HOOD Set. Also, after building 1/35 armor for years, I now try to avoid resin replacement parts.

While I understand there are some accuracy issues with Trumpeters HOOD turrets, they look OK to me and I intend to use them on my model. I really like brass barrels, so I picked up the Trumpeter HOOD upgrade set and intend to use their brass barrels. I read some complaints about the Trumpeter brass barrel end shape, but the barrels look really good to my 1x eye and after painting, it likely wont matter much. Also, the barrels and blast bags fit up really well to the Trumpeter turrets. Rich

Barrels for HMS Hood

Post by Anonymous »

Okay if we get the People in Germany to make the barrels, we need the drawings for them to scale them to 1/350. Does anyone have any info?

Its probably in the the book Big Guns or one British Battle ships of WW2 or between the wars, but mine are all in Deep Storage. I need 16 of these rifels, 8 for the Hood and 8 for the Queen Elizabeth

HMS Hood, 1944

Post by Stefano »

Guess this is the place to be shot for sacrilege... :)

This is my rendition of HMS Hood as rebuilt. With no will to be "scientifically" correct, it was built along the lines hypotithesyzed on the HMS Hood site, with the relevant difference of a different secondaries distribution.
As a divertessment, I tried to simulate wartime conditions by using at maximum scrap material from the previous models, the already built Hood and PoW you can find here:

http://xoomer.alice.it/bk/StefKits/HMS% ... index.html

and here:

http://xoomer.alice.it/bk/StefKits/HMS% ... index.html

Even the brigth red hull is the orginal one (had some problem in this, so the hull is not so homogeneous as it originally was)

all the kits are Heller, 1/400. The Hodd as refitted is not entirely done yet, as it lack its airplane (ready) and a black brushing on the rigging. The flags are missing too. Were the British were used to place the battle flag?

Now, I have a spare Heller Hood brand new in the box... volunteers? Anyone???

I know the model is far from be perfect (it is in line with my skills), but I am personally satisfied for the handsome aspect of the ship.

Cool Model!

Post by FW_Allen »

Stefano,

Although I'm not big on "what if's" in general, I still like to see interpretations of what Hood may have looked like had she survived to reach her 1942 large repair. So, I think you've had a good idea.

That being said, you've done a nice job! In fact, if you'd like us to put one or two photos of your model in our article on the 1942 Large Repair on the Hood Association website, please e-mail me.

Hood Colours

Post by FW_Allen »

Answers to most Hood paint/colour questions (to include deck composition and colouring) can be found at the following location-
http://hmshood.com/hoodtoday/models/tip ... htm#ap507b

Additionally, you might want to check out our article on the Trumpeter kit. It outlines many of the mostly minor errors that need to be fixed. Its at http://hmshood.com/hoodtoday/models/tru ... mpeter.htm

The Same Errors Apply

Post by FW_Allen »

Hi Miguel,

Yes, I noticed it is the Tamiya kit. I still recommend viewing the Trumpeter article though, because most, if not all of the errors that are outlined there apply to all kits of Hood as sunk, to include the Tamiya kit. So, I generally recommend people consult it for ideas, etc.

I'm sure you are already well aware of it, but the Tamiya kit has a few extra issues to address (in addition to the problems shared with Trumpeter, etc). There is the lack of enclosed shelter deck detail, the paravane houses (too low), the motorboat workshop and disinfector room (Tamiya moulded these as one block structure instead of a two tiered structure), the after superstructure (missing the indentation on the port side), slightly wrong splinter shield shapes here and there, etc.

Despite this, its still a very good kit. Dated, but good. A perfect candidate for detailing work. Yours is coming along extremely nicely. It looks like you are REALLY detailing it! Please send us some photos when it is complete.

As for me, I shall wait for the 1/700 Trumpeter kit (there should be less work involved if they've listened to our latest suggestions).

Hi John, in my opinion none of the actual plastic Hood kit is so accurate to be built "straight out of box", some are better than other, but all will need a bit of care and love. The amount of work will depend of the amount of details you want for your Hood.

By the way when I built my HMS Hood the first step was to read all the contents of the HMS Hood association website ( http://www.hmshood.com ) there you will find the right information to evaluate the accuracy of your kit, than you will be able to chose the level of detail and the amount of work you will want to put in your representation.

Anatomy of the ship the battlecruiser Hood will be a great help too, but take care of some mistakes that recently EJFoeth found in all the Hood drawings and kit actually in commerce, you will find the explanation of thins again in the HMS Hood association website.

Good luck!

Just a slight diversion - Is it me, or has anyone else noticed that the Trumpeter Hood is not quite as 'available' as it initially was?

None on UK ebay for weeks now.

Is it still in production?

Has anyone seen the new Hood kit out there callled 'Build the Hood'?

The model is a 1:250 and is a weekly collect series like that Bismarck collection that was on TV a few weeks ago.

Cant find any detail of it yet other than some info via the Hood Assoc forum site and an info line of 0870 870 2575.

Maybe am wrong but I can't say I know of a 1:250 kit of the Hood, was fancying the Fleetscale 1:128 but the Mrs would do a back flip :rolf_3:

They say the Hood is 80 issues long @4.99 per issue so yeah it is not cheap but not as expensive as that Bismarck series @140 issues @4.99 and half as long in time to complete it!
