Crap. Crap. Crap. The Singapore photo shows them quite clearly. Since I'm backdating it to Denmark Straits, I'll have to try to remove them and fix the deck. I should have known as I did notice and then deal with the tubs on the bridge.

Thanks for your timely help! :wave_1:

I thought I'd post some pics of my progress so far. I know there is an in-progress thread, but I thought a few pics of my POW here wouldn't hurt. Apologies for the poor quality pics.

My building style is unorthodox, by which I mean unsystematic and amateurish. Anyway, I am using Krylon lacquers as I can't airbrush Tamiya properly or enamels for that matter. I decant Krylon and spray away without any problems. This is my progress to date on the boat deck, the main bit of which has Krylon primer on it. Will give it another coat soon.

The black stripe is painted and masked. Will spray everything else gray when I've finished with the railings and the rest. Then I will try to brush paint very carefully the deck. I had problems with the railings and stairs (WEM) but am getting better. The WEM does not have enough railings and will have to order more. Bummer, as they are not cheap. I'll also order the 8 barreled pompoms I think as I messed up the PE ones. Still don't know if I'll order metal barrels for the big guns though.

Here are the offending Oerlikon tubs. Should I try to remove them? I'm worried that I'll make a mess of things if I do, but want it to be a reasonable representation of the ship during the hunt for the Bismarck.<br />Oh, given that the lacquer paint is gloss, I will use dullcote to get rid of the shine.

For your enjoyment, one well-known and one very unknown picture of the Mk IV pompom directors as fitted to the KGV class from my blog, pompom director Mk II. They seem to be the Mk II/III fitted with the Type 282 Yagi aerial. The frame seems to be the same afterthought as on the Hazemeyer 40mm bofors.

If anyone comes across the Mk I, please let me know!

When did KGV lose her degaussing cable?
In the picture on this webpage it looks like it has been removed but the outline remains:

Also the bow seems to have been damaged.

Hi John,
Looking at the pics and diagrams of KGV in Raven and Roberts, the 1940 diagram shows the cable, but not on the 1944 diagram of the ship after time in the dockyard (Liverpool, Feb-July, 1944).
Having said this, however, a photo of KGV at the end of 1943 appears not to have the degaussing cable, but I could be mistaken - I find it difficult to tell for sure.
Unfortunately I can't find anything in the text about this.
Your pic is also in Raven and Roberts - it does look like the bow has been dinged.
Not much help I'm afraid though.

Cheers,
John

Thanks Islander, I looked in there as well.
It seems that I can build my tamiya kit OOB without the cable, although I would have to make the welds on the port bow. I wonder if the starboard bow is similar?

While looking for info on this I came across the famous picture of a KGV Class ship with badly worn paintjob on the hull. It is on p.55 of the ShipCraft book on the KGV Class. In the caption it says it is Duke of York but on the back it has a thumbnail of the same pic with KGV written under it.

Raven and Roberts show it on p.377 and say it is DoY at Sydney on 1st july 1945 but in Ensign 1 on the kGV Class (inside front cover) , Alan Raven says it is KGV in the first half of 1945.

Does anyone know which ship it really is? My guess is DoY as the Raven and Roberts caption has an exact date but I would like to know.

Thanks,
Roger

I don't have a scanner so I'm afraid I can't post it.
I tried to find it on the internet but I couldn't.

Sorry,
Roger

John,

The picture is of DUKE OF YORK. KGV had different (earlier model) HA.DCTs for the secondary armament; by the time this photo was taken, ANSON also had different (later model) directors, and HOWE had different pompom locations to those in the photo.

Thanks Tim.
I wish there was a book with diagrams of each ship after each refit but that is asking a lot

Roger,

There is such a book - but it's long out of print. The old Warship quarterly journal ran a four-part series covering the class in some detail in issues 9 to 12, published in about 1980. Some (not all) of the drawings, appear to have been copied and can be found at http://abakus.narod.ru/cg5/kinggeorg5.htm

Thanks Tim, not for the first time I forgot about that set.
I do actually have it but I can't get at at the moment. I bought it years ago when I was interested in wooden ships and had no interest in the KGV Class.

I will make getting at it a priority!

Roger

I want to paint my Tamiya KGV as she would have looked with the British Pacific Fleet.
What WEM colours should I use? Is the dark colour along the armour belt RN Dark grey?

Tamiya say to paint the screws and part of the shaft in Gold leaf colour. I assume the screws should be brass but the shafts?

Thanks,
Roger

In the Tamiya 1/350 kit what weapons do parts G4 represent?
It looks like a dual mounting but not like anything I have seen before.
They helpfully label the 20mm oerlikons which are obvious but not these peculiar things.

Thanks,
Roger

When did the KGV Class add the ship's badge to the front of the Admiral's bridge?
From photos of KGV it looks like the thing (weather-vane?) that was originally located there was moved higher up and the ship's badge was put there instead.

Thanks,
Roger

For those so interested the third and final XJ74 report on the damage to Prince of Wales, entitled Hull Indentation Damage Report, is now on line at;

http://www.pacificwrecks.com/ships/hms/ ... damage.pdf

This new report focuses entirely on the extensive non contact damage to both hulls and poses even more questions to the experts than the previous ones (that proved beyond doubt that there were only four torpedo hits, and exactly where the were), as this non contact hull information is, as far as we can ascertain, previously unrecorded damage and is seen here in detail in the public domain for the very first time.

Anyway, a picture, or three or four or more, is worth a thousand words, or so they say, so Ill let you judge for yourself.

Also some months(?) ago the original Expedition Job 74 report (on the Explorers Club web site) was updated and enhanced / expanded from 11 to 28 pages. This same larger edition of the report and an updated Stern Damage Report (that has also been updated/enhanced slightly to take into account some of those previous additions to the XJ74 overview) are now available via the Pacific wrecks site also.

Unfortunately the web owner has been away for about six weeks or more, so they have been sitting in his in box for all of that time, as they were intended to come online in conjunction with the Explorers Club site update. Anyway he has them up now so all three can be found/accessed on Pacificwrecks.

May I suggest to anyone that has not downloaded or viewed any of the said PDF reports for some time to do so now to keep abreast of what all three current PDFs contain.

http://www.pacificwrecks.com/ships/hms/ ... -job74.pdf

http://www.pacificwrecks.com/ships/hms/ ... damage.pdf

PS. Still in the works, but basically completed now, is a paper (as opposed to these three survey reports) being prepared by historians, marine architects and engineers on the ramifications of all three reports and what the information gathered by XJ74 has on previous held beliefs/accounts of PoWs sinking; but that will not be available until after it is presented a Marine Architects / Engineers Conference latter his year. When it is it will be added to the Pacwrecks site also.

Enjoy,
Kevin

Question:

i have a mini hobby models 1/350 prince of wales. the kit is supposed to configured as the ship was at the time of her loss. however, i would like to model the ship as it was at the battle of denmark strait. what, if any, modifications occurred to the ship between may 1941 and december 1941?
