Return of the Destroyers! Apr. 15-Oct. 15, 2011

There is a better than even chance that MONSSEN was in Ms 21 at the time of her loss.

The TF-67 CO directed all destroyers to be painted in Ms 21 in late October and a good number were repainted during the first week of November 1942, UNLESS the ship was involved in operations and couldn't. Since MONSSEN was at Noumea until 8 November, I suspect her chances are good that she repainted. I don't have any photos to prove it, so take it for what it is worth. But, Ms 12(Mod) would be good for her service earlier.

My plan is really poor, even if I could, I won't be able to add as much details as there already on some of the other builds over here...

I've drilled the portholes in the hull (with some difficuties...)

Started to work on funnels (the ship had coal and fuel boilers).

Also started the bridge: first I drilled the windows edges.

Then I used toothbrush

For searchlight platform I drilled a hole in a 0.5mm plastic sheet, glued it on a 0.3mm then cut and sanded from the outside to give it it's rounded shape

Moomoon, can I ask what glue you use? I ask because my glue would MELT plastic as detailed as that. Like, there's not a hope in hell I'd be able to retain that kind of detail.

searchlights (the ship only had one, but I may lost one...)

Not much details yet, have to study the few pics I have to add more. My plan is very basic.
My main source is French magazine "Navires & Histoire" n�06 (March 2001), a side/top view basic plan found on the net and another basic side view plan in Conways "all the world fighting ships 1906-1921".
These ships had 4 boilers, the two forward ones burning oil only and the 2 others coal and oil.
3 shafts each driven by a 4 cylinder triple expension engine, total HP:10,000
Speed was 29/30 knots

Here are the glue I use: gel and liquid cyano-acrylate. I Found then in supermarkets carrying same name as the glue, not too expensive and don't dry too fast once open (especially if stored in the refrigerator ). Of course it's still dangerous to use because of immediate effect on skin and probably very bad vapours...

Hello All! Long time lurker, first time entrant! I'm coming off a long break from building, and I've been doing a conversion of the old Airfix 1/600 Campbelltown into USS Barney (DD-149) as she looked towards the end of her line service. I picked Barney for two reasons. First, my wife's grandfather served aboard her as a Gunner's Mate. Secondly, she was one of the few 4-stackers that served in WWII that did not receive a covered deck just aft of the forward superstructure for extra berthing and stores. This makes any conversion a heck of a lot easier.



What was difficult to identify (and I finally did, with the generous assistance of Matt Stein over at Model Fleet) was what was in those tubs on the midships deckhouse. They appear to be 20mm mounts, and I'm planning accordingly.

It's required a bit of surgery:





And it's still got a ways to go, but it's been a fun build so far and I'm looking forward to getting back to it.

I started working on Hr.Ms. Van Ghent on Friday evening. I cleaned up the hull, sanded off the main capstan on the "barren for detailess bow," and drilled out all the portholes. I printed out of the Profile Morskie Evertsen book the capstan/hawsepipe detail. Then I cut it out, added superglue to stiffen it out, then added it to the "barren" bow section for more detail. I added the smallest Evergreen strips that I had for the aft deck mine rails and added them to the slits that were represent for them on the kit. I then sprayed the kit with 1000 Mr.Surfacer to look for imperfections.-Sorry, no photos for that,yet. And this is where I stand as of Sunday.

This weekend's progress has been the fwd funnel, and detail parts around the tubs for the twin bofors.

The second part of that was quite straight forward. The Funnel was quite complex, even allowing for the casing being slide moulded as a single peice, there were eight plastic parts, which include an internal structure, plus a raft of etch, both dragon & GMM.




next on to the torpedo tubes, 5" practice loaders & after funnel.

Nice and original subject Bob.
I also like the look of the US flush decks Mike, yet I prefer the earlier classes (Michel B, when do you star your Sampson???).

Here is how I did the rear gun platform (for the AA 76mm).

450mm Torpedo tubes are made with needles, thin plastic strips and toothbrush.

Mast done with metalic brush (thank you MichelB & Manuel), bike brake cable, paper and thin electric wire (this makes it too fat but a bit stronger).

That'where I am now (all dry fitted).

Here is my current work in progress shots from last night.



Here is a shot of the hull with the primary paint of 5N blue and 5O gray. I painted the blue first then used silly putty to establish the pattern...seemed to turn out well, I'm pleased any way.



This is the upper 2 decks of the forward superstructure painted with 5N and 5H with the 5H being hand painted. This thing is as near a Tamiya shake and bake kit as any ship kit I've ever seen. The parts fit very well together.



Here are the main mounts with their base coat of 5N on the vertical with deck blue on the roof, she carried 3 different styles of turret for her mounts with #3 being canvas covered.



This is the main director, I substituted Gold Medal photo etch for the radar.



Here is a dry fit of what I've got finished so far. If this thing goes as well as I think it will I should be finished with it by the end of June.

1/240 Uss Reuben James

Finally my life is back to normal and the Reuben James build can begin. Tonight is all about scraping the wood planking off the deck, that means loosing a few other details, but oh well. Nothing really to photo yet, I am just getting started. But happy to finally be full into my build.....

For those who have submitted photos, there are some really nice looking models coming, keep up the great work.
