Hi,
your Big J looks great, but why do you build full hull and present the Ship on an Waterplate??
The rails along the main deck come at the end, when the rest is finished and nothing could be damaged??
Hmm, if I see your wonderful battleship I think, that I could start my Jean Bart within the next weeks.

Thanks Wolf224!
I'm not quite done with this USS Iowa. Still a long way to go. And none of the superstructure subassemblies are permanently attached, yet.
The main deck railings will be one of the last things I do One reason because of caution while completing the rest of the model and the second reason is that I'm not looking forward to doing them. I completed my first USS Iowa and then a month later, or so, I finally put on the main deck railings. I have to be in the mood for it, I guess.
Right now, I am finishing up the other deck's railings. I'll apply a clear coat to the whole model and then put a dark wash on to highlight the details and apply the decals and then apply a flat clear coat.
I had the idea of putting the Tamiya Ocean Effect Plastic under my full hull model even though it is a full hull model. The brass pedestals prevent it from looking like I'm trying to portray it in the water, which I am not. The water plastic is not permanent, yet. Just for looks, for now, and I haven't decided which will be better; water or no water.
I'm willing to take a VOTE.
I had the idea to put a map of the Mediterranean Sea and the Pesian Gulf under the full hull model of the 1/350 USS Duxbury Bay AVP-38 that I made for my father. It was a flagship for Commander Middle East Forces during the 1950's and 1960's.

The waterplate does make for an interesting show, I must say Carl. The map was also a very cool piece of work for the design as well, show a place where the ship was in its glory under the ship itself. Ultimately I'd say the map plate, because you do so much beautiful work with waterline models on the water plate, it almost seems a waste to use it for a full hull display piece. Not to mention, the map adds a little more history onto the model itself.
Wolf, I know your feeling - I should hopefully be getting the hull for the Mightier Mo soon, and at the same time the base for Gascogne, my plan to build/cannibalize a German Richielieu. That one should be fun, as I'm going to have nothing but quad mounts for the anti-air - Flakvierlings and Bofors Quads, since the Germans did have Bofors guns, and used them on the Lucky Prinz. Should provide an interesting project for me, and a unique look for a certainty.

Looks good, Carl!
I personally think that the only real reason why you should or shouldn't use the plate is the availability of the plate. Like you noted elsewhere, the plate is being discontinued, and you might want to save it for use on a waterline model.

I say go for it, use the plate, it is interesting to have something other than wood under a full hull model

(the model itself is very nice as well

).
Wait out for Gold Rover update.

You could put a map of the Persian Gulf because in that area two members of the class took part in the last conflict battleships ever fought .

Or I even had the idea of adding a strip of a map of the State of Iowa from west boarder to the east boarder. Naaahh!

Some WIP photos of CV-9. Everything that obstructed the view inside the hangar is now opened. Now i 'll just have to wait for starfighter decals to produce their Korean war aircraft sets in order to finish some aircraft to put inside the hangar and then close it.
Comments or questions are always welcomed.

Gentlemen, very nice progress on all your ships!
Carl, I really like the idea with the map. Looks amazing on your other build.

Thanks, Orb. That map was a $12 after market piece. I cut a big hole in the middle of the world to get what I wanted from it.
ASFC,
Your Gold River peaks my interest for a possible future build of auxiliaries. Is she going to be in a diorama during an underway replenishment?
Nektarios,
I would have thought that the Essex would have been a little too, early of a ship for you. But, so is the Iowa class, I guess. I'll be eager to see CV-9 progress.
Is the VOTE done, yet? Water or No Water on my Iowa's base?
Although I really prefer the look of the water under the ship, I think I'm going to take Timmy C's wisdom and advice when he said,
"I personally think that the only real reason why you should or shouldn't use the plate is the availability of the plate. Like you noted elsewhere, the plate is being discontinued, and you might want to save it for use on a waterline model."
I think I should save the OEP for a waterline model.
Maybe I'll put a mirror under the ship so that you can see the transmission, drive shaft, mufflers, and tail pipes on it.
I have added inflatable life rafts to my Iowa. The stbd side is done, the port side is still to go. I merely clipped them from a piece of styrene plastic rod stock.
I'm dreading the PE and radar dishes atop the gun directors. Really, tiny stuff!

Thanks, Hippy Ed!
I've detailed the UNREP crane area and combined and modified two BattleFleet Model winches to make the UNREP winch.

Korean war was too early for me sometime ago. Now i want to build selected units that have participated in all postwar conflicts/wars ( Korean war, Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, Operation El Dorado Canyon, Desert Shield/Desert Storm).
This is a list of the cold war era ships that are in my stash:
02x REVELL CVN-65
01x DML CV-31
01x DML CV-36
01x DML LPH-4
01x DML CVS-37
01x DML DD-963
01x Ships & Co CLG-6
01x ISW CV-9
and those i want to buy in the future:
01x JAG CG-10
02x JAG CGN-9
01x JAG CGN-25
01x JAG CG-16
01x JAG CG-26
01x JAG DD-931
01x JAG LST-1179
01x NIKO DDG-37
01x Ships & Co CVA-14

Looking good, Carl. You also helped highlight places I'll have to make considerations for when I start building the Mightier Mo. I'm not sure if the stack section on the aft, between the Harpoon Tubes, is big enough for one of the VLS, but I hope to be able to fit three of them lengthwise into that section. I would have asked you for comparison, but you already sent me the two spares you had. I already have a feeling I'll have to bulk out the sides of the aft structure as well, so that the structure itself is flush with the top deck. I think the narrow side of the VLS will manage to fit between the harpoons in a raised section, and since I'm planning on using all flat mounts in that location, with the angled ones in the forward block, it should be doable I think. I'm thinking I can manage to keep the Harpoons for additional capacity as well.
Oh, here's an interesting thing - the guns, by being only 3mm too long, actually translate, in scale, to being a little over a whole five calibers longer. Just thought I'd throw that interesting little tidbit out there.
