You are correct. The problem is that it is not modeled as a taper to the end. It is that wide all the way back to the island which I think is incorrect. I think that I am going to leave it alone though. I compared it to my 1/700 Kitty Hawk. It is even wider than her bow. I am sure that it should not be.

Did you say that you had gotten the Ships&Co Intrepid? I just got mine and I think that the flight deck forward of the Island is way to wide. Like a quarter of an inch too wide! It is really obvious if you park an A-4 on the deck. I was wondering if you had made that observation as well. I compared it with my ISW SCB-27A and my DML Essex Class Carriers and it is way off.

Did the SCB-125 refitt make the forward flight deck that much wider or is this just wrong? Kind of a bummer on a $233 kit! The rest of the detail is really nice. I am wondering if I want to do anything about it(ie...get out the blades) or build it as is and leave the aircraft aft so it is not obvious at first glance.

It is giving me some ideas on a scratch build from Antietam to a SCB-125 Kearsarge.

Port side boat recesses have been 'closed' by railings and I've started to detail the forward port gun sponson. GMM detail really works here. I have my doubts about trumpeters' massive cleats, these may have to be replaced or at least lowered a bit.

Take a look at the island as well. It is about a quarter inch shorter than the ISW Island for the SCB-27A kit they did. I am wondering if it is scaled incorrectly? The hull looks very good though.

Mark do you mean this extension of the flight deck on the starboard side of the island???

That is a great photo and one I need to get the island correct. The deck is too wide from the bow to a line from the island to the stbd elevator. It is roughly 3/8 of an inch too wide. I am using my 1/700 aircraft to get a perspective on the size of the deck.

On my deck, you can line up 3 Skyraiders easily accross the deck head to tail. You should only be able to do about 2 1/2. A-4s disappear like 1/800 scale aircraft on a 1/700 ship. You can probably get away with it if you do not put planes on deck. But, having said that, I noticed it out of the box. I figure that if it is going to sit next to 20 some Essex Class Carriers from different periods, it needs to be correct. The flight deck appears to be sized a little better from the island aft. I will do some surgery and get it right.

for the hungry masses (ahem!). Started working on the lso platform and on the plane guard destroyer. I know there are resin alternatives out there for the four pipers but these are expensive and I actually like building hulls - the detail parts will be scrounged from the spare box.

As I'm working from Morskaya Kolleksia drawings of Stewart, a Clemson class four stacker, I have simply read the DANFS entries for Clemson class destroyers until I ran into a mention of plane guard duties in the Pacific in 1936. So it will be USS Long, DD-209. Navsource has some very good pictures of her in the 1930's which also helps.

I finally got the Randolph done. Well, almost. My first attempt at rigging an Essex Class. I need to do a few more things to it but it is close.









Now I am only 3 Airwings short!

She was the only on that wore it so it is unique. That kit will work for Hancock as well for the later fit. I have to go play navy for the week but I will be starting the surgery on the Ticonderoga when I get back.
