Hi guys!
Is Hasegawa's I-68 really as bad and poorly detailed as many people claim on the internet? If so, are there any other (and better) models of Yorktown's nemesis?

Hey Fivi!
I don't consider it a bad kit! Compared to the old I-1/I-6 kit, this is a beauty even when built OOB.
Price is also ok because you get 2 subs... And with a little PE and rigging, anything is possible.

Go and buy it if you want to build the I-68! i know of no other manufacturer of this kit in 1/700.

By the way, are there any good photos of I-68/168? I couldn't find any helpful pics of this submarine.

So I noticed there are 1/350 scale B-1 B-2 and B-3 models available, and C-1 but no C-2..... I guess the A boats used to be available in resin kits, but no longer available. So the question is, other than AFV and Aoshima and Tamiya releases which I think are all I-16,19,20,27,41,58 and 400 are there any more 1/350 Japanese submarines available?

I have the IJA small transport submarines "Maru Yu-1" and "Maru Yu-1001" from Fujimi in 1/350. if you want them, PM me - I was going to sell them anyways!

I remember seeing a sketch of the Kaiten arrangement on the different D-1 type subs (I-370 etc) but can't find it any more. I think it was printed, not online. Any idea where that was? Or does anyone have a scan?

I thought I had one but have been unable to find it. I think the pattern is the same for all subs: two forward, three aft, with the centerline unit staggered further back. Can't swear to it, though.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure the sketch showed different arrangements on the subs of D type...and that's the reason why I'm asking. I'd love to have some variety there

I'm finally working on one of the many ship models in my collection. I 've always wanted to build some ships. But I've never done so. My first endeavor is the nice Tamiya I-400 IJN Submarine. I have the regular version with an Eduard PE set. I'm modeling it with the hanger door open and one of the Seiran on the catapult. The regular version of the kit has the Seiran molded in a green styrene. I was wondering if anyone here has the Limited Edition version with the clear aircraft and is willing to give up one of the clear aircraft, with the wings out, for my project? I don't want to buy a whole other kit for just one aircraft. I know it's a small detail, but I thought the clear version would make the canopy look nicer. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I usually take quite some time to finish a kit, so I'm in no hurry.

I've had no luck finding a Pit Road I-58 late 1/350. I'm wondering if any of the other kits on the market such as AFV used the Pit Road molds? The reason I'm asking is that I have an Eduard photo etch set for the Pit Road I-58 late. Any thoughts?

I-17 was one of the B1 class of scouting types, one of 20 such units. There is one pic of her just after launching, with incomplete conning tower. OTOH, there are a lot of photos of her sisters. So, what exactly do you need?

Verification of the position of hangar & catapult. Combinedfleet mentioned that the I-17 had hangar & catapult aft of conning tower unlike her sisters. Trying to figure out what conning tower would look like if combinedfleet is correct.

According to the footnotes, that's just a theory unsupported by evidence:

[1] According to a widespread theory, in case of I-17 the locations of the hangar/catapult and the deck gun were reversed. This notion is not supported by photographic evidence or eyewitness accounts, all indicating that I-17 had the same layout as the other submarines of her class.

I'll double-check the photo, which is in the KMM submarine book but I'm pretty sure she had the same configuration.

Here you go. I don't see anything to suggest she was any different than her sisters. She has yet to gain the fairing for her conning tower, but the layout is the same.
