On another note, here is a photo that appears to corroborate Yoshida's comment about the deck being painted "jet black"; note that the wood deck appears to be DARKER than the grey metal deck on the bow:

Yoshida also said that Yamato's paint looked silver. The foredeck looks to dark to be silver. Look how dark the turret tops are. Looks like the picture's contrast must have been bad.

I have misplaced my Yoshida book. I just ordered another copy on Amazon and when I get it I will post his exact quote about the deck color.

The deck seem dark to me. Maybe not black, but some kind of dark gray, since that the deck weathered fast

He said the deck looked jet black. You dont have to find the quote. He also said the water was jet black from the oil after the ship blew. I just doubt that it was pitch black. And Im sure the rain and the angle he was looking at the deck effected what he saw. I say the deck had a greyness to it and when wet looked black. Cool?

Glad my memory still works! The deck was probably a dark gray like it was 6 months earlier at Leyte Gulf. The shading in the black and white photos strongly suggest that, and, in any event, we know from Yoshida that:

1. It was painted;

2. It looked "jet black"

So, it was a dark color, whether dark gray or black ...

Do you think buying the pontos tan deck and then weather it with a really dark wash would do the trick?

I had someone make me a deck for my 1/350 Yamato. I kept asking him to add more brown in it but he didnt. I'm gonna take a pic of it an post it here soon.

nice one! Pontos sell the dark version of the deck too , for the new Yamato. But the color seems too monochrome

This is the picture I sent him or reference. This is the deck outside the Yamato museum in Kure. This picture was taken in 2009. So it should be about 4 years old so about as old as Yamato's deck at the end. If they made this deck out of hinoki cypress it very well could have looked like this w/o any paint or stain.

l've always liked the 1/700 version by Takumi Akiharu below. Same one as is in the gallery at: http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html

True, the deck is a bit monochrome, but it is 1/700.

Truly a nice model in 1/700.

I've read that they used the soot from the funnel and a solvent to make the deck "black", so now I'm interested in how to replicate that effect on a wooden deck

I'm sticking with a clean wood deck. As for those extra gun directors, there are extra parts of those included in the Tamiya kit, so they are easily added.

Here is the most current Japanese diagram of the AAA guns amidships added for Tenichigo, AND the corresponding fire directors. The arrows show which guns were controlled by which director.

Vlad I think that picture is dated. I have the new Model Art Super Illustrated Yamato which was put out in 2008. It states it has newly discovered findings regarding Yamato. It doesnt show the director in that area.

Well, that's certainly possible - but then what is that round object that is in the right position and is the right size to be the extra fire director in the photo I posted on the previous page?

Good question.

I wonder if the new Tamiya Yamato has that director where you say it should be?

Nope. The kit doesn't have that director in that location. It does have a few extra directors though, so adding it is a piece of cake.

nice discussion, eventually we will find the truth. You can always copy one fire director with resin
