Dave, i did not see the photos of the real thing but the name plate (as all other things) look real to me.

You say it is peel off letters...Is it kind of decal or self-adhesive? If it is the latter can you give some examples where it is used 'in real life' so to say as I have never heard of such kind of letters and opportunity.

Hi Yevgeniy The lettering for Kiev was made to order by Barry's lettering in the UK http://www.modellettering.com/
he specializes in lettering for model makers and is the only manafacturer of large scale self adesive signage that could undertake non latin characters .

Did you use a jig for making the rungs themselves, if so would love to see it?

I used PE on vincennes, but will make my own for the next build.

Hi Andrew I'll root out the picture in question .

Using the same method as for the name the next logical step was to fit the
pennant number. Once again these style of numbers where bespoke for the
Kiev and at the time of ordering where not available from any other source .
They are now available .

Here the set of numbers could be fitted in one go .

The pennant number along with the name are now completed , except for the portside .

Thank you Bill for all your support , but inspiration is a two way street and when I see the progress on your Indiana that keeps me going . This is the longest build project I have ever undertaken but time is not my master only the desire to do the best I can.

Continuing with the bow detailing and it�s the turn of the red star seen on most
Soviet and Russian warships .
This is not a decal but a peel of adhesive red star . Once again made to measure.

The star has a white surround which was reproduced using the simple expedient of
first placing the image onto a sheet of 1mm styrene to give strength with some
flexibility and marking around the edges of the star , remembering to adjust the
mark to show a white trim to the red.

Removing the star from the sheet by cutting along the marks

Measurements were taken as to the position of the red star on the side of the hull .
Once this had been determined the star was fitted permanently into place

Moving on to complete the bow with the ships crest . This takes the form of
winged anchor and red star. All the class had this crest at the stem .
The materials used were 1mm thickness corrugated and .50mm styrene sheet,
2mm box section and a length of 4mm od styrene tube.

Next stage was to make a simple working sketch on tracing paper using photos
of the stem of Kiev.

The drawing was transferred to the styrene sheet to form the base back ground
and the corrugated styrene forming the wings

The base or back ground profile.

Here the back ground and wings are cut from the styrene

Each of the parts are prepared for assembly . The anchor is made up from a single
section with the tipping palm or the lower part from two separate pieces and the
ring from a section of styrene tube.

The corrugated wings are divided into two and the anchor assembled . Also at
the top is an edging strip as per the original . as on the original the flukes are
embedded into the wings.

How did you "transfer" the drawing onto the plastic? I see a darker outline in the picture when you taped the drawing onto the styrene, but you obviously didn't cut through the drawing to make the mark on the plastic.

Hi Timmy good to hear from you . An old trick . As the sketch is on tracing paper all I have to do is re-draw over the tracing and the image is transfered to the styrene. Thanks for asking.

Hello there Dave. I'm a newcomer to the site and to the hobby, and I've just read this build thread in its entirety (took me about a week...!). I'd just like to say how fascinating and impressive it's been. This is a monumental project, and your modelling skills and attention to detail are superb.

In my other life I'm a railway modeller (nasty dirty steamy things, ugh), and I wondered if you were aware of the Scale Link range of products? http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Etc ... coupe.html Amongst other things, they have a number of etched brass meshes in various sizes which might have suited your handrails. Unfortunately the online catalogue isn't very friendly.

I look forward to further updates on this wonderful build.
