Re: Calling all USS Spruance class (DD) fans

I hope that someone can help me. I recall seeing a photo(s) of the USS Arthur W. Radford forward mast sitting on the pier when they were cutting her up prior to being sunk. If any one can post the photo(s) or give me a link that would be great. I am currently working on a 1/96 scale model of her.

Location of the twin triple Mk.32 ASW torpedo-launchers

Post by Walter »

Hi, all,

I am building the USS Elliot and USS Cushing in 1/350, from the Dragon kits. They are lacking the twin triple Mk.32 ASW torpedo-launchers. I want to use the Veteran resin launchers, but somehow I cannot find pics showing their exact location.

They are hidden behind sliding doors on the superstructure, just under the flight deck, so there is no need to model them.

Actually the torpedo rooms are on the main deck (the fantail is the main deck) and the exterior doors are in the upper hull. Each door is accurately represented in the Dragon kit as a rectangular depression in the hull near the aft end of the flight deck. The doors hydraulically pull in and slide aft allowing the tubes to train 90 degrees out.

Great photos thanks! I owned the torpedo rooms on USS KIDD from 1983 - 1986 and later served on HAYLER. The one pics shows that my 30 year old memory of how the door opens may be rusty. I think the doors raised instead of sliding. Each torpedo room had a Pneumatic chain hoist/gantry crane and the torpedoes were stored in racks. So the torpedoes could be easily moved for re-load pr put on a dolly for movement to the other torpedo room or raised to the flight deck. Unlike the SPRUANCE Class, the KIDD Class did not have a torpedo magazine in the hangar. I am unsure of the TICONDEROGA Class, but my guess is that they did not.

Hi, guys, thanks for the replies on the location of the torpedotubes! Great stuff!

Hmm other question though: did the modernized Spruances (e.g. the Cushing, which I want to model late in her career) also receive the Mk. 38 chain gun? If so, same question, where was it located?

I think the the 2,5 cm Bushmaster guns were midships, approximately below the Harpoon launchers.

Hi, David,

yes, I am aware, it is basically the same issue as with the Tico and the Kidd kits, both of which I have built. Lots of good old Evergreen plasticard and filler...;-). Thx for the message, however.

They were mounted midships, just before the boats and just aft of the midships superstructure doors, right at the deck edge. Check out my USS Moosbrugger in the gallery. I have them installed. I used the Veteran Chain gun.

Question about EDD-964

Post by magicalflyer »

Hi,

This is my first post here, though I've been lurking around for quite a while. So, I'm currently building Dragon's 1/350 USS Cushing kit, and is planning to convert it to the EDD-964 SDTS ship. It was hard to find a clear quarter view picture of that ship. I've found a thread here with a link to an excellent pictures of EDD-964, but it seems there's a difference around the area on the old helo deck just after the hargar door. I've circled the 'mysterious' structure in the picture I attached with this post (sorry, I kept getting failure message trying to link to the picture using img tag)

That one is the picture from around 2011, I believe. Pretty sure that structure wasn't there in the picture in this link:
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/spr ... ?service=1

I wonder if anyone have a clear picture of that area when she was testing the shipboard alternative fuel in 2011?

Thanks ^_^

Spruance Class Booklet General Plans

Post by blandcorporation »

Hey guys, did anyone pick up a set of jpeg plans of the Spruance Class from NAVSEA when they were publicly available? Must have been uploaded a couple years ago, but now the links are dead. If so, can anyone email me a copy?

This is the link that had the images: http://www.navsea.navy.mil/Home/Team-Sh ... -Drawings/

Thanks in advance!

Don't have copies that I can recall, but emailed them to see if I can get copies. If I get them I'll pop them up on my site for everyone. Either way I'll update when I get a response.

I don't want to become strictly a plans site or a damage report site, but I do like to post useful things that people will find useful.

I had to re-organize my plans "page" as I was getting more of them from different sources.

Main Page is here. I PM'd the SoDak plan link and will update this post with the SpruCan Plans when I get them up.
