Just to add on to a question a guest had earlier, when is Trumpeter supposed to release the Roma they announced?

As mentioned at another post, the 1/700 Roma is now listed at Stevens Hobby for a May 2011 release, just in time for summer. No word yet for a release date for the 1/350 version.chuck wrote:

Well a Littorio is coming soon then. I just hope those new Battleships from Trumpeter/Pitroad will be at the same level or even higher like the 1/700 South Dakota class and not a HMS Renown abomination.

With the imminent release of the 1/700 Roma from Trumpeter I have a question regarding the class. In the section for Spain, Garzke and Dulin mentioned the Spanish variants of the Vittorio Veneto would probably have had a revised AA battery. Would there have been any other differences in appearance such as a bow like the Roma or the first two ships?

Re: Calling all RM Vittorio Veneto-class fans!
I got the first bucnh of Roma's from Trumpeter this night. The kit is simple amazing detailed and I see a lot of improvent from previous Trumpeter kits (unlike the bathtoy HMS Renown).
So far I had the 3 USS South Dakota class battleship as the best offerings from Trumpeter in 1/700, but this new Roma trully tops them.

Okay the new RN Roma from Trumpeter/Pit-Road is perhaps the best battleship so far those companies have produced. But the 38 cm main barrels 152 mm secondary barrels and the 90 mm AA barrels need replacement. Anyone can suggest me a brass barrel replacement ? Any manufacture does Italian brass barrels ?
Thanks in advance.

I'm sure the barrel makers will have them out within a month or two, if not sooner.

Re: Calling all RM Vittorio Veneto-class fans!
For those who have in mind to represent them full hull, the rudder skeg has to be faired. Trumpeter represent it as a box brutally protruding from the bottom, while the real thing had a gentle curving that integrated its forms into hull lines. Here are the hull lines of the aft section

Edit
Now that I can get a more thorough look at the box contents, thanks to Sean's excellent rewiew, I can point out some other issues. It seems a very good model, underwater hull aside, and there should be no other pitfalls; but it gives me the impression of something having been hastily researched:
-The model carries the full complement of launches, pinnaces, dinghies and so on: photographic evidence (and common sense) indicate that Roma never embarked all that flammable mess on her decks; usually, only those on the aft superstructure were carried, and neither all of them; you may choose a photo from your period of interest and pick up your launches accordingly
- As already said by Sean, a red underwater hull is just impossible. Almost all RM ships had green antifouling. Still on the painting side, I have to verify if the air ID stripes went really that far aft: I would be very surprised if they did. As there were fewer and fewer axis bombers flying over the Med when Roma was commissioned, it would have made more sense to reduce to the slightest extension those stripes.
Anyway, one thing concerning the stripes is sure: they were not bright red as suggested by Trumpeter.
That is all I can point out for now; I've seen that this Roma has fasces near her nameplate: remember to remove them if you wish to represent her after July 25th, 1943

Re: Calling all RM Vittorio Veneto-class fans!
Well besides the confusion with the boats and the painting the new RM Roma from Trumpeter/Pit-Road is an amazing offering.
The only thing that bugs me is the main barrels for the 38 cm guns that need as soon as possible to be replaced.
And by the way, Amazon has a new book for the Littorio class battleship wich seems to be the definitely collection for information regarding those magnificent battleships.

Of course I agree, it's a good model and I wasn't bashing it; I just wanted to warn everybody about those minor issues that could waste the realism of the model if left as they are. I've asked about the air ID stripes, hopefully I'll get an authoritative answer soon.

I'm curious about those stripes too- I didn't have enough information to comment on them either way, so I didn't.
Maybe in November?
(PS- Thanks for the compliment!)
