Many thanks Rui! The battle damage was actually really fun to do! It did take quite some studying of the photo's and plans of the real thing, but also a bit of gizmology as not every side is visible on those photo's. I'm looking forward to the next bits of battle damage, which will follow pretty soon�

That is very good and sharp work indeed

as you say-- 1/700 is riddled with compromise--but once the colours have been homogenised
and your usual paint artistry has been applied and all matt... it will look very convincing indeed

Glad to see you back at it--I too have been at bech and will update mine shortly ( at last! )

I really don't know what this is. My best guess is part of the structure under the flight deck? On this photo, it looks a bit too big for that, but on the video it look dimensionally possible. It might also be part of the elevator system? Or indeed a piece of camouflage? There were fake house structures on Amagi when she was bombed, so it might be a remnant of these indeed? It seemed metal to me indeed of bamboo, but I can be wrong in this.

You're very right that it is too regular looking. But I'm afraid that's one of those compromises Jim and me are talking about... The entire thing measures only 7mm across�
I aimed to manufacture the main structure (3 beams with 9 rods perpendicular to them), but there seems to be some finer strands of something behind this too. Maybe I'll still have a go at it�

And some progress!
Slowly moving further forward:







The lower walkway and horizontal part of the mast platform were taken from the Lionroar PE set. The support structure of the latter was mostly scratch built however, to better resemble the photo's of the real thing. As the AA platforms normally have the shielded guns, there were no PE pieces for it in the Lionroar set. It adapted some perforated gussets and thread plate from port side platforms however, and scratchbuilt the rest. Railings are another Lionroar set (the one in the Unryu set are fine, but these are just a bit finer), WEM superfine, and some thin copper wire.

Meanwhile, I did the bomb damaged compartments on the inside of this area:







It was scratchbuilt from brass and plastic sheet, copper wire, aluminum tubing, and some generic PE perforated beams from Rainbow. This went relatively fast, as the shapes are rather simple. Battle damage is fun to do!
It took a lot of studying of these photo's though:







Together with the plans of Unryu, there is some good info in those, but also a lot of unclarities.
But I'm sure now that this part is finished, less blurry versions of the first two photo's will suddenly surface!

I really like the clean PE work as well as the superb battle damage effect. It would turn out even nicer with some paints and weathering.

Jaw dropping, amazing work! Just perfect.
This will be another milestone in 1:700 warship modelling, one of the very few that everyone around the world dealing with this branch of the hobby will know and venerate.
It's a delight to follow the gestation of such an exceptional masterpiece.

Ok, now the pressure is really on!!!
My hands are starting to shake now, with such expectations!
